Novel Bioactive Compound Production by Microbial Biota: Potential Antimicrobials Potential antimicrobials produced by microbial biota

Man is always trying to make his life easier and accomplished. He has faced mass destruction in history due to epidemics like small pox, malaria and plague. In order to combat diseases, exploration of man led him to search for causative agents and their control. A time reached when it was found that microbes are themselves a source of potent metabolites which have proved to be effective as drugs and medicines showing great antibiotic activity. It is necessary to find out new sources for potential new antimicrobial compounds. Several hundred important compounds have been isolated which have antibiotic activities and diverse chemical nature. But these compounds should have minimum toxicity to be useful clinically. Because of the increasing resistance of pathogens, there was a never ending desire and need to search for more. Bioactive Compounds have been extracted from microbes which are produced as secondary metabolites. Day by day, new compounds are being discovered giving a hope of golden future of drug industry. The current article emphasizes the importance and need to search for new bioactive compoundsto overcome infections caused by multiple drug resistant (MDR) and biofilm forming pathogens irrespective of the previously present knowledge.

Specificity of Academic English: An Analysis of Dissertation Writing in the Field of English Studies in Pakistan

Academic English has its own register in terms of its diction, structure and layout. This register is mandatory for writing dissertations. Yet, academic English also entails specificity of written language that is strictly social, cultural and research bound. The current study has described the specificity of academic English used in dissertations in the field of English studies in Pakistan. By adopting corpus based research approach the study has illustrated the specificity of academic English by identifying the frequency of the use and functions of content words like verbs and nouns in PhD dissertations in English Linguistics, English Literature and English Language Teaching. By using software Antconc, verbal structures of the different types and categories of verbs were analyzed in terms of the frequency of occurrence and their functions in encoding research in the different sections of dissertation i.e. introduction, literature review, research methodology, analysis/discussion and conclusion. Whereas, the processes of nominalization via suffixation was also analyzed via software Antconc in terms of specifying the categorical use of the patterns of different suffixes and their functions in encoding research in dissertations. The study is significant in facilitating the scholars and researchers in understanding the categorical use and functions of verbs and processes of nominalization in encoding research in dissertation in English studies in Pakistan.
