This research empirically tests the impact of trade openness along with political openness and quality of openness index on corruption. A dynamic panel data set spanning over 19 years with 29 cross-sections is utilised for this purpose. Generalised method of moment technique is employed for the estimation of results to tackle the issue of endogeneity. Two data sets of corruption perception indices are used to check the sensitivity of estimates to the selection of corruption perception data. In addition, the analysis is carried out once for the entire sample of counties then, it is replicated for three subsamples are made on the basis of income classification by the World Bank. Empirical results support the inverse relationship of trade openness and corruption but results are not robust to selection of multiple indices for corruption perception measures. Press freedom, long term exposure to democracy, Quality of Openness Index and Per Capita Gross Domestic Product have robust results. More freedom to the press in a country and longer duration of democracy leads to higher probability of a country to have lower levels of corruption. In addition, higher Per Capita Gross Domestic Product leads to lower levels of corruption as expected. However, Quality of Openness Index remains insignificant throughout the analysis implying that doing trade with less corrupt partners does not have an impact on corruption levels of importing country. Regarding government size, the variable is negatively related to corruption in the case of higher and upper middle income economies; however, it is positively related to corruption for the lower income economies. Furthermore, results for the current level of democracy are inconclusive

فروری کا معارف چھپ چکا تھا کہ پروفیسر حبیب الحق ندوی کے انتقال کی اندوہ ناک خبر ملی۔ وہ باڑھ (پٹنہ) کے سادات کے ایک معزز خاندان سے تعلق رکھتے تھے، مدرسۃ الاصلاح سرائمیر میں میری طالب علمی کے زمانے میں ان کے دوچھوٹے بھائی بھی تعلیم حاصل کررہے تھے جن سے ملنے کبھی کبھی حبیب الحق صاحب بھی آجاتے تھے، وہ خود بھی یہاں زیر تعلیم رہ چکے تھے، پھر پاکستان چلے گئے اور عرصہ سے جنوبی افریقہ کی ڈربن یونیورسٹی سے وابستہ تھے، مولانا سید ابوالحسن علی ندوی مدظلہ سے بیعت تھے، ان سے ملنے لکھنؤ آتے رہتے تھے، اسی سلسلے میں ایک دفعہ بے سان و گمان دارالمصنفین بھی پہنچے، لکھنؤ سے اعظم گڑھ کا یہ سفر بڑا مشقت طلب رہا مگر دارالمصنفین کو دیکھتے ہی ان کی ساری کلفت دور ہوگئی، سرائمیر جانے کی خواہش کی جہاں کی سادگی اور اپنے زمانہ کے استاذوں کے ایثار و قناعت کے بڑے مداح تھے۔ ایک اور دفعہ ندوۃ العلماء میں روس کی آزاد مسلم ریاستوں کے بارے میں میں نے ان کا پُراز معلومات خطبہ سُنا تو انہیں اعظم گڑھ آنے کی دعوت دی یہاں بھی ان کی تقریر بہت پسند کی گئی جس سے ان کے علم و مطالعہ کی وسعت، حالاتِ حاضرہ سے باخبری اور ملی درد کا اندازہ ہوتا ہے۔ دارالمصنفین سے ان کو قلبی لگاؤ تھا، معارف پابندی سے پڑھتے، اس میں ان کے مضامین اور خطوط بھی شایع ہوتے تھے، اپنا سہ ماہی انگریزی رسالہ اور تمام کتابیں یہاں بھیجتے، ادھر عرصہ سے ان کا حال معلوم نہیں ہوا تھا، دفعتہ ان کے ارتحال کی خبر آگئی۔ اﷲ تعالیٰ غریق رحمت کرے اور متعلقین کو صبر و شکیب بخشے، آمین۔ (ضیاء الدین اصلاحی، مارچ ۱۹۹۸ء)

Peran Guru PPKn Dalam Menumbuhkan Kesadaran Diri Siswa Terhadap Tata Tertib Sekolah

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peran guru PPKn dalam menumbuhkan kesadaran diri siswa terhadap tata tertib sekolah di SMP Negeri 7 Gunungsitoli. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Lokasi dalam penelitian ini adalah di SMP Negeri 7 Gunungsitoli dengan informan Kepala Sekolah, Guru PPKn dan siswa. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan peneliti adalah teknik observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data dan verifikasi data. Dari hasil penelitian ditemukan adanya peran guru PPKn dalam menumbuhkan kesadaran diri siswa terhadap tata tertib sekolah antara lain (1) Guru sebagai korektor yang menilai semua sikap dan perbuatan siswa, (2) Guru sebagai motivator yang memotivasi siswa untuk dapat menaati tata tertib sekolah, dan (3) Guru sebagai pembimbing yang membimbing siswa menjadi manusia yang taat pada aturan sekolah. Selanjutnya kendala yang dihadapi guru PPKn dalam menumbuhkan kesadaran diri siswa terhadap tata tertib sekolah yaitu sifat dan karakteristik siswa yang berbeda-beda yang terkadang mengabaikan arahan dan bimbingan yang disampaikan oleh guru. Adapun upaya guru PPKn untuk mengatasi kendala tersebut yaitu terus mengingatkan siswa tentang tata tertib, menjadi contoh teladan bagi siswa dan melakukan pendekatan kepada siswa yang melanggar tata tertib sekolah.

Interplay of Language and Gender: A Comparative Study of Selected Works of Contemporary Female Poets

This analytical research lies at the intersection of language and gender. It is rooted in Showalter‘s perspective that contemporary female writers share distinct female experiences, which require a female framework for examining literary works by women, about women. Theoretically speaking, Post-modern frameworks promote human experience to be located, inescapably within language. Language shapes and reifies positioning of women in the society. Therefore, I have taken up Gynocriticism as an approach towards the selected texts, which looks at the language of the texts by the female authors from female perspective. Earlier, studies in this area centered on the similarities and differences between the male and female spoken language, but I have narrowed down this area of study by studying the similarities and differences in the use of literary language by Maya Angelou, Margaret Atwood and Moniza Alvi. They have been studied under the canopy of Communities of Practice Approach, using the adapted theoretical-operational framework given by Elaine Showalter, Jonathan Culler and Sara Mills. It tends to bring out those experiential and relational values of the selected female poets that provide basis for re-establishing of women‘s positioning in the society through the transformative power of language in literature. It does not only reflect upon new positioning of female intellectuals, but women in general. It brings out their urge for growth and empowerment that calls for encouragement, appreciation and recognition. The analytical findings reveal that these women of intellect and wisdom belong to different parts of the world, yet they share a common goal, of raising their voice against suppression of women, exemplifying themselves to be equally talented and competent in their art of writing poetry. The study also presents strength of female writers to use language as a transformative power and display the dynamics of their experiential and relational values, for the emancipation of women around the world through their linguistic diversity and literary aesthetics. The analysis of the selected poems determines and establishes the position of the female poets as talented and artistic beings, making the world accept women as a group, who has started to look at themselves as strong and equal members of the society, bringing out their persuasive voice and making them heard as women of substance in the world.
