This dissertation deals with the accurate backoff process modeling of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function( DCF) and characterization of traffic distribution. The backoff process has a significant impact on the performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol depending on the offered load conditions on the network; unsaturated or saturated load conditions. In unsaturated load conditions a short backoff' is desrable due to emerging queueing dynamics. While in saturated load conditions where thequeue might be full, a long backoff process will help in avoiding collisions. Several attempts have been made to develop an analytical model to correctly represent the behavior of the actual backoff process in unsaturated and saturated load conditions. However what seems to be lacking in existing approaches is the consideration of offered load as the key parameter to modeling the backoff process. Since the offered load has a critical role in the backoff process modeling assumptions, in this thesis a complete mathematical model of the DCF protocol is developed to provide a framework through which the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) behavior can be evaluated. The I motivations for this thesis are enumerated below: (i) To enhance existing legacy models on the DCF, as upcoming IEEE 802.11 amendments (versions 11 ac, 11 ad, 11 ah, 11 af, etc.) are based on it. The current enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) scheme of the IEEE 802.11-2012 standard (IEEE P802.11ac/D3.0 2012) is only a technical extension of DCF. It may also be noted that the upcoming IEEE 802.11ac and .11 ad standard amendments (IEEE 802.H-2012 .2012: IEEE P802.11adiD8.0 2011) are also based on the core MAC of IEEE 802.11-2012. (ii) To revisit assumptions behind existi the vast amount of literature work, issues such as how closely an models in favor of improved accuracy. Despite analytical model captures with the actual DCF back off process have remained open (Tinnirello, Bianchi, and Xiao 2010). One of the key reasons for the lack of accuracy in the models lies in the approximations due to assumptions. Thus, revisiting the assumptions of existing models is still desirable for improved accuracy. (iii) To study the offered load dependency on service time distribution for selecting the appropriate queuing model. In literature (T. Li, Leith, and Malone 2011; Zanella and De Pellegrini 2005) several attempts have been made to study the variation in the mean service time for arbitrary offered loads. However, showing the dependency in the form of patterns could provide a useful tool for selecting the right queuing model and further enhance the accuracy of performance analysis. (iv) To harmonize and unify disjoint approaches to unsaturated and saturated load analysis. In the literature, the unsaturated (Engelstad and Osterbo 2006; Duffy, Malone, and Leith 2005; Tickoo and Sikdar 2008; Pham, Perreau, and Jayasuriya 2005; Vardakas et al. 2007; Dong et al. 2008; Zhao, Tsang, and Sakurai 2011) and saturated load (Tinnirello, Bianchi, and Xiao 2010; Pham, Perreau, and Jayasuriya 2005; Vardakas et al. 2007; Bianchi 2000; Foh and Tantra 2005) performance analysis has been addressed separately and there is a need to have a unified approach. This thesis seeks to address the issues highlighted above and provides a framework for studying the average end-to-end packet delay for arbitrary loads. Furthermore, the characterization of the service time distribution through the dependency patterns is also discussed. The dependency patterns constructed using the newly proposed backoff process model provides greater insight into queueing modeling assumptions. With an accurate backoff process model, the queueing model can be analyzed independent of the IEEE 802.11 DCF model. Thus, traffic modeling can be analyzed separately without the fear of errors emanating from the underlining IEEE 802.11 DCF analytical model. Inaccuracies can thus be treated by observing the traffic pattern and modeling it more closely

پٹنہ یونیورسٹی کے شعبہ فارسی کے سابق پروفیسر جناب عبدالمناف بیدل کی وفات گزشتہ اپریل میں ہوگئی، انھوں نے تقریباً نوے سال کی عمر پائی اور اس لحاظ سے خوش نصیب تھے کہ اپنی زندگی میں اپنے شاگردوں کو علم و ادب میں بڑی شہرت حاصل کرتے دیکھا، بڑے شفیق استاد تھے، اس خاکسار کو بھی ان کی شاگردی کی سعادت نصیب ہوئی، اپنے زمانہ میں فارسی کی نصابی کتابی انگریزی لباس پہن انگریزی زبان میں پڑھاتے وقت اس مشرقی زبان میں مغربی رنگ پیدا کردیتے، بڑے اچھے شاعر بھی تھے، بیدل تخلص کرتے، مشاعروں میں اپنے ترنم سے اپنی شاعری میں دلنوازی، دل ربائی اور دل نشینی کی ساری کیفیت پیدا کردیتے، آخر عمر میں مذہبی رنگ بھی زیادہ غالب ہوگیا تھا، زائرین حج کی خدمت مختلف حیثیتوں سے کرتے رہے، استاذی المحترم حضرت مولانا سید سلیمان ندویؒ کے سفر حج میں ساتھ تھے، سلیمان نمبر میں ان کا ایک پرکیف مضمون ’’سفر حجاز کے تاثرات‘‘ کے عنوان سے شائع ہوا، گزشتہ اگست میں ان کو حکومت ہند کی طرف سے فارسی کی سند کا ایوارڈ بھی ملا، لیکن حکومت کی یہ جوہر شناسی اس وقت ہوئی جب ان کے بہت سے شاگردوں کو ان سے پہلے اس اعزاز سے نوازا جاچکا تھا، اﷲ تبارک و تعالیٰ ان کو ان کی نیکیوں اور خوبیوں کی بدولت کروٹ کروٹ جنت نعیم عطا فرمائیں، آمین۔ (صباح الدین عبدالرحمن، مئی ۱۹۸۲ء)

مولانا شاہ حکیم محمد اختر: حیات و خدمات

Molana Shah Hakeem Mohammad Akhter was born in 1923 in Partabgarh UP India. He received Medical Education from Unani Medical College Ellah Abad and Islamic Education under a great saint Shah Abdul Ghani Phoolpuri in Madrasa Bait ul Aloom. He was a born Sofi, an eminent Islamic scholar, a great philanthropist, an established writer and a great reformer. He wrote more than 200 books. He also established an Islamic University, Asharaf ul Madaris. Thousands of scholars are his pupils, followers and disciples. He imparted them both Aloom-e-Shareyat and Tareeqat. In 2001 he founded an Islamic NGO naming “Al-Akhtar trust International” for helping the suffering humanity. During these days society was ridden with un-Islamic trends and practices Shah Hakeem Mohammad Akhter emerged to rooted out these evils from the society. It will not be wrong to say that Shah Hakeem Mohammad Akhter like his spiritu-al mentor (Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi) was the real inherent of Ulama-e-deoband. The aim of this article is to present over view of biography and invalua-ble services which he rendered for tasawwuf and noble cause of humanity.

Physical, Biochemical and Genetic Properties of Indigenous Walnut Juglans Regia L. Genotypes in Malakand Division

Malakand division of North West Frontier Province, Pakistan is famous for the production of walnuts and it alone contributes about 82% of the total country’s walnut production. However, the specie is being aggressively cut due to multiple uses of walnut bark and wood, leading to the extinction and genetic erosion of valuable walnut germplasm. To conserve this specie, surveys were conducted in four walnut growing districts of Malakand division during the years 2005 and 2006 and nut samples from 226 walnut genotypes were collected. Data were recorded on various qualitative and quantitative traits. On the basis of data analyses 18 superior walnut genotypes along with two exotic varieties were selected for further detail study. Results revealed that several of our indigenous genotypes excelled the existing exotic varieties growing in Pakistan in various quality aspects. Bio-chemical composition of the selected genotypes revealed that the percent crude fat ranged from 54.7 to 63.8% whereas crude protein from 10.45 to 14.50% and carbohydrates between 13.10 to 26.95 percent. At molecular level genotypes showed various levels of genetic polymorphism for the loci detected by using primers GLA-05 and GLA-10. Maximum genetic distance (100%) was observed between Payne and Sw-58 and Payne and Serr, closely followed at 94% dissimilarity between Payne and Dr-67. Based on the data from the dendrogram, the walnut genotypes were classified in to four major groups. Maximum numbers (13) of genotypes fall in group-I. Sw-58 was the only genotypes in group-IV and the most distinct from others. The response of selected walnut genotypes to graft take success was also studied. Results revealed that graft take success was highest (75.33%) in genotypes Ch-22 and Sw-8 (74.00%), while lowest (40.00%) in genotype Ch-7. During one growing season, Ch-20 attained maximum plant height (192.40cm) compared to minimum (56.63cm) in genotype Sw-46. Three different summer walnut propagation methods on 10 different dates were also examined. Results revealed that among the three methods of summer budding, patch budding performed on 20th July yielded the highest bud take success of 57.5%. Previously there was no concept of budding in walnut nurseries in the region. Thus by practicing summer budding along with winter grafting in walnut nurseries will certainly increase farmers income.
