Metal contamination of urban and agricultural soil is a potential threat for human health. With increasing population, human activities like rapid industrialization, unchecked urbanization and agricultural activities significantly contribute to the heavy metal pollution. Metal contaminants present in environment can enter into the food web so cause harmful effects on living organisms. The present proposal aims to address the heavy metals pollution like Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr) and Arsenic (As) in soil, and bioaccumulation of these metals in soil dwelling organisms ?earthworms?. For this purpose, 40 sites were selected including urban, agricultural, industrial land forest areas. Briefly, soil samples and earthworms were collected from selected sites and stored under standardize conditions. Soil digests, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extracts and earthworms? digests were prepared using acids under standard lab conditions. The digests and extracts were assessed for heavy metal contamination by the use of atomic absorption spectrophotometer following the standard protocols. We found that high levels of metal contaminant were present in selected samples of soil of industrial and urban areas. The highest concentration of Chromium was found in industrial soil samples (mean 2352 ?g/g). Additionally, the bioaccumulation of these metals in earthworms also showed significant concentrations. However, the soil and earthworm samples from agricultural and forest areas had comparatively low level of heavy metals. These results indicate that industrial and urban areas of district Kasur are affected in terms of heavy metal pollution due to excessive anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, bio-accumulation of these heavy metals in earthworms serves as a useful bio-indicator of soil pollution. . The average range of heavy metals in soil of industrial areas were; Cd (26.931?g/g), Cr (2352.3?g/g), As (21.62?g/g) and Pb (6.64?g/g) whereas in earthworms from industrial areas were; Cd (33.43?g/g), Cr (31.085?g/g), As (0.30?g/g) and Pb (11.45?g/g). Similarly the average range of heavy metals in soil in urban areas were; Cd (18.153?g/g), Cr (1354.9?g/g), As (22.824?g/g) and Pb (30.612?g/g), whereas in earthworms from urban areas were; Cd (23.206?g/g), Cr (17.215?g/g), As (0.27?g/g) and Pb (11.89?g/g).The total accumulation rate of cadmium, lead, chromium and arsenic in the biomass of the earthworms was significantly higher in industrial and urban areas of Kasur rather than agricultural and forests.

Education is a very important aspect of human life. Muslims were strongly believed on Religious Education. It was considered mandatory for spiritually life here in this world and here after. This article “Research Study of Religious Education Trends in the Prophet (PBUH) Era” introduces the concept of “education” with its definition from Oxford Dictionary and by Muslims philosophers. The “Education System” is also defined with its main components and its objectives in the light of sayings by various Muslim intellectuals. Then, the education system in the Prophet (PBUH) Era is discussed in detail. The role of Prophet (PBUH) and his companions and their effects are also discussed. It also studies the main objectives of Religious Education, its curriculum, the role of Mosque and the relation between teacher and student. Lastly, the current education system of Pakistan is analyzed critically and a few suggestions are given to make it a better one.

Plant Bacteria Synergistic Strategy for Remediation of Contaminated River Water Through Floating Treatment Wetland System

Floating treatment wetland (FTW), an innovative approach, offers a practical solution for treatment of polluted river water. Floating wetlands perform as a hydroponic system composed of growing medium for emergent vegetation and their associated microbes which remove nutrients and pollutants from the polluted water. The core objective of this study was to explore the potential of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) augmented with pollutant degrading bacteria for remediation of heavy contaminated river’s water at microcosm scale. The analysis of water samples collected from River Ravi, Lahore, Pakistan revealed that the river is polluted with organic and inorganic pollutants. Four macrophytes; Brachia mutica, Typha domingensis, Phragmites australis and Leptochola fusca were selected to develop FTWs and were inoculated with the bacteria having pollutants degrading and plant growth-promoting activities. The developed FTWs system efficiently removed both organic and inorganic pollutants from the water and bacterial inoculation further improved the efficacy of the developed system. Between Typha domingensis and Leptochola fusca, inoculated with three different rhizospheric and endophytic bacterial strains, the performance of T. domingensis was significantly better than L. fusca. Between Phragmites australis and Brachia mutica, inoculated with consortium of five rhizospheric and endophytic bacterial strains, the performance of P. australis was better than B. mutica with and without bacteria. The FTWs system also showed potential to remove potentially toxic metals, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Cr, from the water and their metals removal efficacy was increased by the addition of microbes. The bacterial augmented treatments showed high biomass production than non-bacterial augmented treatments. Inoculated bacterial strains were found increasing in root and shoot of inoculated macrophytes.
