Title: “A survey to find out competencies for teaching biology at secondary level in Punjab” Pages: 165 Researcher: Zakia Khatoon Supervisor: Dr. Muhammad Tayyab Alam Bukhari Co-supervisor: Dr. Muhammad Maqsood Alam Bukhari University: Foundation University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences(Islamabad) Year: 2012 Level: PhD. Biology teachers occupy an important position in the entire spectrum of education. We can equip our future generation with the latest techniques of problem solving, by investigating biology teachers’ competencies in the teaching of biology at secondary school level. It is at secondary school level, that students shift their reading abilities of narrative texts, to complex expository material. This study was based on biology teachers’ competencies in preparing biology students to enable them to face challenges of the 21st century. This study was aimed to investigate the required teaching competencies for biology teachers. This study also aimed to find out the existing level of teaching competencies ofbiology teachers through teachers’ perception. The objectives of the study were to determine gaps between existing and required competencies of biology teachers, and recommend remedial steps to fill these gaps. Population of this study comprised of all the teachers teaching biology in F.G. Secondary Schools in Punjab. The sample of the study consisted of all science teachers teaching biology, in fifty percent randomly selected F.G. Secondary Schools in Punjab. Stratified sampling technique was used for sample selection. A questionnaire for biology teachers was prepared. To ensure the reliability of the questionnaire, Cronbach’s alpha was used. The instrument was also revised in the light of feedback received from pilot testing. Data was collected through the questionnaire by personal visits and personal contacts. Data collected through questionnaires were analyzed with the help of mean, percentage, and chi-square. Major findings of the study indicated that most of the teachers were well qualified academically and professionally. They were aware of specific teaching skills and innovative student-centered teaching methodology, and its importance for producing creative thinking and problem solving abilities in students, but they were not implementing these teaching skills and methodologies in the classroom. Majority of the teachers were not fully aware how to use Computer and Internet. They were not competent in using problem solving method, and innovative teaching methods in the classroom. Major implications of the study were to prepare competentbiology teachers by enhancing their specific teaching skills, for producing creative thinking and problem solving abilities in science students and to prepare the coming generation to meet the challenges of the future.

Sleep Quality in relation with Perceived Stress and Physical Activity in the Students of Pakistani Medical Colleges

Background: Sleep is an essential function of our body. Many surveys have reported the prevalence of poor sleep in university students, especially in medical students.  Objectives: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of physical activity and stress on sleep quality among medical students in Pakistan. Materials & Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted on medical students of private medical colleges in Lahore. A convenient sampling technique was used and 210 students were selected. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Godin Shephard Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (GSLTPAQ), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS 10) were used for data collection. We used SPSS version 20 to analyze data and applied statistical tests: Chi-square test and Logistic Regression.  p-value < 0.05 was taken to establish significance. Results: Among the study participants 91(43.3%) were males and 119 (57.7%) were females. There was a significant effect of stress level on sleep quality (P=0.000*). The frequency of good sleepers was seen to increase by almost three times with increasing physical activity, however, this difference remained non-significant (p=0.07). The logistic regression test showed a significant relationship between poor sleep and stress (p=0. 008**) while no significant relationship was seen between sleep quality and physical activity. Conclusion: There was a significant association between poor sleep and high-stress levels and an increase in physical activity showed an increase in the frequency of good sleep, however, this difference was non-significant. It can be inferred that this positive effect of increasing physical activity on the quality of sleep could be indirectly due to its relieving effect on stress.

Neural Networks Ensemble Evaluation of Aggregation Algorithms for Forecasting

The aim of the thesis is to examine and analyze different aggregation algorithms to the forecasts obtained from individual neural network (NN) models in an ensemble. In this study an ensemble of 100 NN models are constructed with a heterogeneous architecture. The outputs from the individual NN models were combined by four different aggregation algorithms in NNs ensemble. These algorithms include equal weights combination of Best NN models, combination of trimmed forecasts, combination through Variance-Covariance method and Bayesian Model Averaging. The aggregation algorithms were employed on the forecasts obtained from all individual NN models as well as on a number of the best forecasts obtained from the best NN models. The output of the aggregation algorithms of NNs ensemble were analyzed and compared with each other and with the individual NN models used in NNs ensemble. The results of the aggregation algorithms of NNs ensemble are also compared with the Simple Averaging method. The performances of these aggregation algorithms of NNs ensemble were evaluated with the mean absolute percentage error and symmetric mean absolute percentage error. In the empirical analysis, the methodologies developed were tested on the Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS load data set of five years from 2006 to 2010 for forecasting. It can be concluded from the results that the aggregation algorithms of NNs ensemble can improve the accuracy of forecast than the individual NN models with a test data set. Furthermore, in the comparison with the Simple Averaging method, the aggregation algorithms of NNs ensemble demonstrate slightly better performance than the Simple Averaging. It has also been observed during the empirical analysis that; reducing the size of ensemble increases the diversity and, hence, accuracy. Moreover, it has been concluded that more benefits can be achieved by the utilization of an advanced method for forecast combinations.
