The present study aims to Adapt, modify and develop norms of the Hand Test in Pakistan. A sample of 500 participants (270 males & 230 females) age ranged from 11 to 80 years (M=34.44 & SD=17.34) was recruited from various cities of Pakistan. The sample belonged to various economic classes which includes earnings from up to 20,000 to above 1 lac Pakistani Rupees. Participants were further bifurcated into four groups which include 350 normal who were further divided age wise into four groups. Group one age ranged from 11 to 20 years. Group two age ranged from 21 to 40 years. Group three age ranged from 41 to 60 years. Group four 61 years and above. The second group consisted of 50 maladjusted. The third group consisted of 50 neurotic/anxiety related disorders who were categorized into generalized anxiety, obsessive compulsive and phobic. Whereas, the fourth group consisted of psychotics who were further categorized into schizophrenic, major depression and bipolar. Cross sectional research design was implied, purposive sampling technique was used for data collection. The study was carried out phase wise, in phase one scoring booklet of Hand Test (Wagner, 1983) was translated from English into Urdu language using back translation method, comprising fourteen stimuli (10 original and Four adapted). A pilot study was carried out to adapt four new stimuli out of a set of 10 on the criterions (a) their ability to generate responses in more scoring categories (b) varied range of responses and these were placed from stimuli nine to thirteen. Licence to use the Modified Hand Test was obtained from Western Psychological Services. In phase two reliability and validity studies were carried out to establish psychometric properties of the Modified Hand Test with promising results test-retest reliability (r =.39 to .83), inter-scorer reliability (r =.87), split- half reliability was determined while dividing stimuli into odd and even categories and it was found in the range of α=.04 to .84 for failure (in neurotic/anxiety related disorder group) to bizarre (in psychotic group). Construct Validity came out for interpersonal with environmental (r =.43). Predictive validity of socially desirable traits with academic grades remained moderate. In phase three normative data, percentile ranks and z scores were computed for various scoring categories which facilitated in determining normal ranges of scores across group of samples for age groups and gender for normal group. Qualitative analysis based on content was computed through frequency counts; certain new areas were explored like religiosity, oppositional, introjection, projection need for altruism and affiliation. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was computed for different groups of participants, age groups and economic classes for normal group. Results were significant across main domains as well as sub categories at .01 and .05 level of significance. Analysis of results depicted that the Modified Hand Test provided confirmation to normative data and studies reported by its author and other researchers. Furthermore, it explored new dimensions of personality.

Islam and Woman in the Contemporary Arab World: An Interpretation of Rajaa Al-Sanea’s Girls of Riyadh from Islamic Feminist Perspective

The present position paper explores to examine Rajaa al-Sanea’s“Girls of Riyadh” (2005) from the Islamic feminist perspective. Also, the study highlights the model of western feminism epitomised in the narrative under reference, vis-à-vis the Islamic concept of feminism. Islamic feminism grants equal rights to women and ensures its implementation in the Islamic state and society, whereas Western-sponsored feminism dwells on the archetype of women’s liberalism. That, in turn, leads to an anarchic and chaotic society, because of its believing in bringing women not only equal to men but superseding them in socio-cultural positioning. In the existing situation, the novel decries phallocentric society of Saudi Arabia and aiming at replacing it by the sensate-secular feminism that believes in the undue autonomy of the women. In order to investigate the presence of overwhelming patrilineal mores, the study pursues Islamic feminism as a theoretical model and employs reader’s response technique as a methodology. More far the findings of the research are concerned, the researchers conclude that replacing the patriarchal autonomy in the said society by Islamic feminism is befitting and benefitting than to replace it by the western feminism.

Role of Social Capital in Enhancing Equitable Water Distribution under Participatory Irrigation Management System in the Central Punjab

The development of agricultural sector in Pakistan largely depends on efficient irrigation system because irrigated lands supply major portion of the agricultural produce. A massive amount of canal water is wasted during the irrigation process from main canals to the actual fields. Inadequate management combined with an increasing demand of irrigation water has resulted in low, inequitable, and unreliable water supplies. This water-scarcity situation has given birth to a hidden economy, where water users illegally tap irrigation system to generate a black market in water. The small farmers especially the farmers at tail are disadvantaged in terms of inequitable distribution of irrigation water in this situation. To overcome the problem of inequitable water distribution, Government of the Punjab introduced Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) through Punjab Irrigation & Drainage Authority (PIDA). The Farmers’ Organizations (FOs) are the central to the PIM system. The success of any project/plan depends on what a person knows and the network of relationships (social capital) developed by the members of community. Social capital is the trust, reciprocity and mutuality that inhere to social relationships. It generates when members of different social groups meet each others for attaining common goals keeping aside family, caste and political affiliation. The worldwide success of different programmes/projects for welfare of farming and other communities is linked with the social capital. The present study was, therefore, designed to see the role of social capital in facilitating improvement in equitable water distribution under PIM in the central Punjab. The study was carried out at Lower Chenab Canal (East) Circle, Faisalabad command area where PIM was started in 2000 as a pilot project. Overall, 480 respondents were selected through multistage sampling technique for data collection. Results of the study show that due to PIM activities cropped area has increased 5 and 5.4% in Rabi and Kharif seasons, respectively. The satisfaction level of farmers about recalibration of outlets, water turn and repair of “nakkas” (water diversion) was very good. However in case of water theft control, the satisfaction level was not up to the mark. The functioning of Khal Panchayat (KP) and FOs was generally satisfactory and needed more efforts for improvement in the system. The bi-variate and multivariate analysis demonstrated that among socioeconomic factors education, farm size, social status, farm location at watercourse and location of watercourse at distributary were significantly associated with the improvement in equitable water distribution. The different dimensions/aspects of cognitive social capital such as reciprocity, solidarity, conflict and mutual trust and structural social capital (trust on KP, FOs and PIDA officials and participation in PIM activities) emerged as important predicting variables of response variable, the improvement in equitable water distribution in the multivariate analysis. The substantial value of R2 0.643 reflecting that 64% variation in equitable water distribution was due to the social capital variables (cognitive and structural) and only the background variable i.e watercourse location at distributary. It established the suitability of these variables in predicting the improvement in equitable water distribution. Strict enforcement of PIDA laws and inclusion of more strict clauses in PIDA ordinance were suggested for controlling water theft offense. Farmers’ participation in watercourse and distributary maintenance may be enhanced with motivation through KP, FOs and PIDA officials and also through imposing strict fines on those who did not participate in these activities by amending the PIDA ordinance. On the basis of the results of the study, investment in social capital building was recommended for further improvement in the equitable water distribution.
