Karachi is one of the worst effected cities due to unchecked and uncontrolled noise pollution. Population growth rate of Karachi is about 3.0% per annum that depicts the annual growth of population at risk while pollution growth is also considerably high. The growing environmental degradation has exerted grave burden on resources, therefore, environmental monitoring has become indispensable. This neglected issue needs a serious attention and, continuous surveillance to evaluate the quality regularly. In this study, a hypothesis is formulated: "the high level of noise is associated with the geographical agglomeration of land use and traffic volume, which results in high incidence of noise related diseases and people working near those areas are on vulnerable risk.” The prime goals of this study are to modulate the information pertains to noise pollution and its adverse effects on human health and find out their spatial patterns all over Karachi. The research has covered different parameters: assessment of land cover / land use, human settlement growth, temporal traffic patterns, population distributions, current levels of noise, health implications, physicians’ and public perceptions. Spatial variations within metropolis have been largely ignored mainly due to less comprehension, under estimation of spatial techniques as well as difficulties in collecting, processing and analysing the data at micro geographic scales. Remote Sensing technology has been providing multi-dimensional information, which is utilized in various environmental investigations while Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have been accepted as a turnkey solution for the complex world due to its magnanimous breath of functionalities and cost effectiveness. The developed GIS evaluation combined the data sets, various analyses and the resultant maps with the capability to integrate further parameters for future risk assessments. Multi-attribute decision analysis was successfully employed. Micro-geographic appraisals of the metropolis were performed by considering 58 zones outlined by the local development authority. Each regional assessment included area, population density, distribution of land cover, split of land use, and frequency of noise-induced diseases, their prevalence scenario and temporal variations in noise levels within the zone. Multiple regression models for predicting noise levels at the olden iv regions of Karachi metropolis have been formulated in which traffic and land use parameters act as independent variables. The most unique feature of this study is the unification of engineering techniques with that of human behavioural sciences to trace down the manifestations of noise pollution. It is hoped that in future, more analogous multi-disciplinary researches would be conducted on emerging mega cities of the third world.

أمير الشعراء أحمد شوقي: نثره الفني ومنهجه

It is very clear that Ahmad shoqi was titled as king of modern Arabic poetry due to his unforgettable literary deeds towards it. Apart it all, his good struggle toward Arabic prose were ignored in his life, because of the prose was not his field to be tried in and it has its own experts. Some of these experts collected his prose and compiled it in a huge encyclopedia of his literary works named “al mosoa al shoqia” (الشوقية الموسوعة). This article also discussed his literary prosaic struggles, his methodology which he acquired and the deficiencies which were pointed out by critics. Adding more, the feature of the prose are also drawn in.

Biochemical Characterization of Post-Harvest Citrus Fruit Rot Caused by Penicillium Species and its Management

Citrus fruits are attacked by several fungal pathogens during post-harvest storage in Pakistan. The survey of fruit markets of Faisalabad, Multan, and Sargodha, Pakistan indicated that several fungal pathogens from different Genera including Fusarium, Geotrichum, Penicillium, Alternaria, Lasiodiplodia, Aspergillus and Rhizopus are infecting citrus fruits. The incidence of Penicillium rot was highest at all locations during 2016-17. All pathogens were identified based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Alternaria and Fusarium species were also amplified and sequenced based on endopolygalacturonase EndoPG and translation elongation factor gene. The most predominantly occurring Genera were Penicillium, Fusarium and Geotrichum with the overall prevalence of 42.6, 14.2 and 12.2%. Phylogenetic relationships of these genera based on the ITS region with species from other geographical regions of the world showed diverse ancestral relationships. Most predominantly occurring species of Penicillium viz., P. italicum and P. digitatum were selected to conduct management studies. The effect of resistance inducers salicylic acid SA and jasmonic acid JA at different concentrations revealed that SA and JA inhibited the disease development on citrus fruits ‘Kinnow’, ‘Meyer lemon’ and ‘Mosambi’ in a concentration-dependent manner. The activity of peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) also showed an upsurge in the activity of both enzymes compared to untreated and healthy fruits. The effect of plant extracts S. aromaticum, C. citratus, C. longa, C. verum and E. cardamomum was tested in vitro on colony growth inhibition of P. digitatum and P. italicum. S. aromaticum and C. verum produced the highest inhibition of colony growth of both pathogens at 15g/L. Total phenolic contents (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) were found to be highest in S. aromaticum. RP-HPLC analysis for the presence of antifungal phenols and flavonoids (quercetin, gallic acid, benzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, cinnamic acid, kaempferol, sinapinic acid) indicated that quercetin, kaempferol, and gallic acid were present in all plant extracts. S. aromaticum and C. verum showed the highest concentration of detected phenols and flavonoids. The combined effect of S. aromaticum, C. verum and SA and JA on ‘Kinnow’, ‘Meyer lemon’ and ‘Mosambi’ fruits revealed that the activity of these treatments was significantly enhanced when applied together. The combination of S. aromaticum with SA and JA produced the lowest disease incidence and severity (%) of green and blue mold on all types of fruits compared to infected control and other treatments. The activity of PPO and POD was significantly enhanced in fruits treated with combined application of plant extracts and resistance inducers than infected control. The effect of treatments on quality parameters such as total soluble solids, weight loss, ascorbic acid content, juice content loss, and titratable acidity showed significant variation in all treatments. It was concluded that resistance inducers and plant extracts as a stand-alone and combined treatments can suppress green and blue mold and cause an upsurge in the activity of PPO and POD. The increase in activity of PPO and POD enzymes might have a role in the suppression of green and blue mold of citrus fruits.
