Peace has always been one of the fundamental needs and urges of man. And yet it has been so elusive: despite his phenomenal progress in every domain of individual and collective life, man has not been able to find lasting peace, with himself and with others on this blue planet. With the invention of weapons of mass destruction and relentless arms race amid lingering conflicts among groups and states, the need for peace education has increased manifold. In order to forestall any of the existing conflicts in the world explode into third world war, governments and decision makers must turn to peace education as the most reliable and durable means of bringing peace to this war-torn world of ours. Peace education is a process of achieving peace, at personal, inter-personal, national and international levels, through education, both formal and informal, focussing on promoting universal brotherhood, global citizenship, international understanding and the culture of peaceful co-existence. Therefore, this research study is exclusively based on the formal mode of peace education. The area specified within this mode of education is the ―Awareness and attitude of teachers and students towards peace education atuniversity level in Pakistan‖. As research tools, two questionnaires covering the aspects of Awareness, Attitude and The General Institutional Environment of the respondents were prepared to get responses from a wide spectrum of the teachers and students across the country. Validity and reliability of the research tools were properly ensured as elaborated. In the first place, the research tools were placed before a panel of experts whose valuable input was incorporated accordingly. This was followed by pilot-testing of the questionnaires and, as a consequence, its further fine-tuning. In the final phase, the validity and reliability concerns related to the questionnaires were fully addressed through Factor Analysis. Ultimately, the questionnaire was distributed among a total of 770 target respondents. In all, 719 questionnaires were collected back, indicating 93.38 response percentage. The data thus collected was arranged, sifted and analysed through SPSS version 16. Following were the key findings of the study. There was negative correlation between awareness level about peace education and attitude towards the same. Majority of the respondents had high level of awareness about peace education. Majority of the respondents possessed high attitude expression, yet fall low with reference to the ratio of their awareness level. Male respondents were more aware about peace education in comparison to female teachers and students. And that, male respondents had higher attitude about peace education when compared with female respondents. In the light of the findings, suggestions and recommendations related to bringing about change in the mainstream education system in Pakistan have been made for policy makers, curriculum planners, educationists and researchers. The study, its findings and recommendations are expected to influence future policy formulation by those in the power corridors and also provide guidelines for others, individuals or organizations, in the field of peace education. Successful implementation of the agenda of peace education in Pakistan will, nevertheless, demand unwavering political commitment, sufficient resource allocation and a sustained policy of peace education, both at national and provinciallevel.

On the one hand Islam espouses the notion of free trade, and on the other hand it frowns on state interference in trade. Developed and developing countries make head way freely in a free trading culture. This state of affairs buoys up the spirits of traders and inspires them to invest freely and lead to an economic upturn. Thus society flourishes. Foreign direct investment flows in a country from free trade. The scientificand technical expertise of industrialized countries is transferred to low income countries. Not only high quality products are available in abundance in the open market but also the moderation of prices is automatically established by the competition of business people. In this way, the free trading culture functions as a filtering device in the free market and,  without any artificial or external interference, discharges all the tasks efficiently from its own internal logic. Critics of free trade, on the other hand, demur the system fills the coffers of multinational corporations but suppresses the rights of workers,  locals and small industrialists. The real purpose of this system is to establish Western powers’ control over global resources. Taking advantage of the flexibility of the free trading culture,  traders artificially raise prices through monopoly and hoarding.

Evaluation and Selection of Potato Genotypes for Better Yield, Storage and Processing Attributes

ABSTRACT Potato ranks fourth in production among food crops after wheat, rice and and maize in Pakistan. Although Potato production in Pakistan has increased many folds but it’s per hectare yield is low as compared to main potato growing countries. The use of fast food is increasing day by day, which will enhance the utilization of potato as processed product. New processing industries are being developed in Pakistan during recent years. The non-availability of quality raw material for processing is a major impediment for the growth of potato industry. In Pakistan more number of most desired varieties for processing with good yield and shelf life will decrease over dependence on a single or two potato varieties for this speedy growing industry, and thus maintain accessibility and quality of raw materials. At present no local variety has been developed with desirable characteristics for commercial cultivation to fulfill the needs of processing units in the country. Improvement and encouragement of cultivars with good storability and processing potential could supply a safe guard to additional realized during glutted assembly seasons, thereby falling post-harvest losses and enhancing the stakeholders’ income. Keeping these in view, the present work was carried out to select new potato varieties with desirable characters for sustainable good yield, nutritional quality, storability, fresh marketing, and chipping, frying, boiling and baking. Thirty two genotypes including standard varieties grown in Pakistan (Desiree, Cardinal and Diamond) were evaluated for the obvious aspects at National Agricultural Research Centre, Islamabad. The results of the present research endeavors showed significant differences with respect to various characteristics among genotypes. Yield was comparatively higher in the genotype 394021-120. The processing/quality assessments indicated that the starch and dry matter was maximum and the reducing sugar was minimum in NARC 1-2006/1, though the highest protein content was in NARC 1-2006/2. The correlation study illustrated that dry matter had negative correlation with reducing sugar. The longest dormancy period was shown by 393574-61 in ambient storage and least total weight loss was observed in 393574-72. In cold storage the genotype 393574-61 was superior to other genotypes, showing minimum total weight loss. As far as sensory characteristics are concern, panelists scores shows that genotype 394055-40 in boiled & baked potato and VR 90-217 in chips, VR 90-217 and NARC 1-2006/1 in French fry were found better. In the present trial, on the basis of their overall better performance in all aspects varieties 394021-120, NARC 1-2006/1, 393574-61, VR 90-217, NARC 2002-1 and 9625 are considered suitable for good yield, fresh marketing, storability and processing, to enhance farmer’s income and cope with demands of the industry.
