The state and society emerged simultaneously on 14th of August 1947. Before that day, Pakistani society had no shared existence and was only an “imagined community” in the literal sense of the phrase. The state of Pakistan became an administrative arrangement put in place by the British rulers to ensure their hold through a coercive dispensation. The change of regime did not immediately and fundamentally alter the nature or structure of the state. The psychosocial dimensions of values, attitudes and behaviour of the central authority and its structures remained colonial. The state, its institutions and officials were not “Pakistanized”; and the basic paradigm of relationship between state and the people has remained that of the “rulers and the ruled”. The state has manifested anti-people behaviour and shown proclivity to use coercion against the society. Judiciary, civil and military bureaucracy and police along with the co-opted clergyhave become deeply interwoven in maintaining their hold over the society. On the other hand, the institutions of society have not been able to develop values, attitudes, and behaviours that could create a caring, progressive, and pluralistic national state. This conflict in incompatible values, hostile attitudes and behaviours between state and society institutions and individuals is continuing. Consequently, the state has become fragile and the society has become more fragmented. The resolution of this conflict requires psychosocial transformation in individuals and institutions of the state and society.

Factors Affecting Hospital Service Innovation: Literature Review

Innovation at the hospital as a change in the delivery of patient-focused health services by encouraging healthcare professionals to work smarter, faster and better. Service innovation can provide an effective way to create a sustainable competitive advantage for hospitals. This study aims to analyze and examine the factors that influence service innovation in hospitals using the literature review method. The results were obtained from a literature search that discusses the major factors that influence service innovation, namely in the form of a good management system within the scope of the hospital. This big influence is that human resources, starting from the leaders and employees who work in the hospital, must work together for the advancement and empowerment of the hospital.

Biosorptive Potential and Binding Sites of Heavy Metals on the Cell Wall of Selected Filamentous Algae

Indiscriminate release of heavy metal pollutants into the environment from point and non-point industrial sources has posed a major threat to all kinds of organisms inhabiting aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The application of biosorption i.e., removal of heavy metal ions by the use of biomass, has emerged as a promising technique in the past few years. Utilization of green filamentous algae in this technology still remains largely unexplored. In the present study, the biosorption capacities of biomass of filamentous green algae, Spirogyra cummunis, Cladophora delmatica, and Spirogyra spp. were evaluated for toxic heavy metals, such as Cadmium, Cd (II) and hexavalent Chromium, Cr (VI). The biosorptive binding sites were studied with the help of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectrometer (FTIR). Results revealed that the rate and extent of uptake were influenced by pH, contact time, and biosorbent concentration. The optimum pH value for uptake of Cd (II) was found to be 5.0 and that of Cr (VI) 4.0 by all the studied biosorbents. The equilibrium sorption data for Cd (II) at pH 5.0 and that of Cd (II) at pH 4.0 were described by various adsorption isotherms, such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models. Langmuir isotherm was found to be the best suited for the interpretation of acquired data, showing monolayer adsorption and Freundlich theorem, the worst. Values of Cd (II) sorption capacity, (qmax) for the studied species were found to be 1.44, 11.9 and 14.42 and those of Cr (VI) were 498, 411 and 312, respectively. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were also studied. The results showed that pseudo-second order kinetics was suitable for the interpretation of data and thermodynamically biosorption was found to be feasible and spontaneous under the given conditions, in case of all the biosorption investigations undertaken in the present study. SEM and FTIR revealed biosorptive binding sites and possible electronegative functional groups, such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl, etc., on the surface of biosorbents which could favor the binding of cations, such as Cd (II) and Cr (VI) ions.
