The study investigated the status of ESD in teacher education of Pakistan; sustainability consciousness (an outcome of ESD) of the preservice teachers; and usefulness of ESD literacy-based pedagogical model with the preservice teachers.Such an investigation was undertaken in order to inform implementation of ESD in teacher education in Pakistan. Moreover, the study aimed at contributing towards knowledge on ESD pedagogies; ESD outcomes; and ESD-integration in university courses. The main focus of the study was on developing an ESD literacy-based pedagogical model and investigating its usefulness with the preservice teachers. Usefulness of the model was studied in terms of change in preservice teachers’ sustainability consciousness and their teaching practice as ESD pedagogues. Pedagogical model developed in the study was rooted in the transformative learning theory. To study the usefulness of the pedagogical model, action research was designed. The study employed a wide range of methods to gather data. To identify the status of ESD in teacher education in Pakistan, content analysis of the teacher education curriculum and policy documents was done in terms of ESD content, ESD processes and ESD learning. The documents included in the analysis were National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST); National Standards for Accreditation of Teacher Education Programmes (NSATEP); and curriculum for B.Ed. (Honours) Elementary Programme.All these documents were prepared during the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). Findings from the content analysis indicate that though some aspects of ESD-learning and ESD-processes have been included in the NPST and the NSATEP, there is no key standard on ESD in both documents. Similarly, in the B.Ed. (Honours) curriculum some courses have included ESD content and processes but there is no standalone course on ESD. Sustainability consciousness of the preservice teachers was investigated by adapting a survey tool developed by a group of xvii Canadian researchers (Michalos et al., 2015). Data were gathered from 207 students (preservice teachers) studying in the final year of the B.Ed. (Honours) Elementary Programme. Mean scores of the study respondents on the scale measuring sustainability consciousness were found significantly lower than the expected score. Moreover, they were significantly lower than that of upper secondary Swedish students. To study the usefulness of the pedagogical model (developed in the study), data were collected through pre-test, post-test, observation, participants’ written reflections and interviews. The findings showed that the pedagogical model i.e. Pedagogy of Sustainability Education in Teacher Education (PSETE) was useful in enhancing sustainability consciousness of the preservice teachers. However, it was only partially useful in transforming preservice teachers into ESD-pedagogues. ESD is a key field in the post-2015 development agenda, thus the findings of the current study may be used by Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO to help the concerned institutions to mainstream ESD in teacher education because mere addition or integration of ESD in some of the courses is not enough to transform preservice teachers as ESD pedagogues. Study findings may be used by the teacher educators to integrate ESD in their courses.

افسوس کہ ۱۸؍ نومبر ۸۸؁ء کی صبح ۳۰:۸ بجے اردو اور فارسی کے نامور معلم محقق جناب پروفیسر سید حسن کا پٹنہ میڈیکل کالج میں انتقال ہوگیا، اناﷲ وانا الیہ راجعون۔ چند دنوں پہلے ان پر فالج کا حملہ ہوا تھا، انتقال کے وقت ان کی عمر تقریباً ۷۸ برس کی تھی۔
وہ ۱۹۱۱؁ء میں اپنے نانہالی گاؤں شیخ پورہ ضلع مونگیر میں پیدا ہوئے، اسی ضلع کا الہرہ گاؤں ان کا آبائی وطن تھا، یہاں کے سادات کا تعلق حضرت سید احمد جاجنیریؒ سے ہے، پروفیسر سید حسن کا خاندان بھی جاجنیری تھا، والدہ کا سلسلہ نسب حضرت مخدوم شیخ شعیبؒ برادر عم زاد حضرت شیخ شرف الدینؒ احمد یحییٰ منیری سے ملتا ہے، جب وہ ۷؍۸ سال کے تھے تو ان کے والد کا انتقال ہوگیا، لیکن ماں کی شفقت و تربیت نے یتیمی اور محرومی کا احساس نہ ہونے دیا اور نامساعد حالات کے باوجود وہ تعلیمی مراحل طے کرتے رہے اور مڈل، میڑک، انٹر اور پھر گریجویشن کے سارے امتحانات میں اول آئے، ۳۵؁ء میں اردو میں ۳۷؁ء میں فارسی میں ایم اے کیا، ۳۶؁ء میں انھوں نے ایجوکیشن میں ڈپلوما بھی لیا، بعد میں ۱۹۰۶؁ء میں انھوں نے دانش گاہ تہران ایران سے فارسی جدید، زبان پہلوی اور فارسی قدیم میں ڈپلوما حاصل کیا، طہران میں ڈاکٹر نذیر احمد اور پروفیسر سید امیر حسن عابدی وغیرہ بھی ان کے ساتھ تھے۔تعلیم ختم ہونے کے بعد ان کے مشغلہ تدریس کا آغاز ہوا، ۳۷؁ء میں بہار نیشنل کالج میں وہ فارسی اردو کے لکچرر مقرر ہوئے، ۷ سال کے بعد ۴۴؁ء میں پٹنہ کالج میں لکچرر مقرر ہوئے اور اسی کالج میں وہ ۵۰؁ء میں اسسٹنٹ پروفیسر اورچھ سال کے بعد ترقی کرکے ۶۱؁ء تک پروفیسر رہے، اسی عرصہ میں حکومت بہار نے عربی و فارسی میں مطالعہ و...

Today, majority of the Muslims' lives have turned out to be colored with a similar shade of the western civilization in every sphere of life. We watch that the matter of imitation achieved its most exceedingly awful pinnacle. In this era of ecstasy, the imitation of infidels and penitence of the Sunnah is growing rapidly due to the fact that Muslims have made it their habit. A particular group considers it enlightenment and ideological freedom and feels ashamed to follow Islam and Sunnah. The main reason for this attitude is that Muslims are unaware of the disadvantages of the imitation of infidels. In this article, the nuisances and flaws of imitation have been discussed, so that the Muslims could know about its imperfections and follow the Qur’ān and Sunnah.

Vitamin E Supplementation in Practical Diet of Labeo Rohita Fingerlings

The effect of dietary vitamin E supplementation in practical diet of Labeo rohita fingerlings was experimentally evaluated in this study. The study was conducted in three feeding trials which lasted 60 days each. The basal diet was same for all feeding trials. In the first feeding trial, two adequate levels (100, 150 mg/kg) and two high levels (1000, 1500 mg/kg) of vitamin E with a control level (0 mg/kg) were fed in a completely randomized design (CRD). In the second trial, two levels of lipids (8 and 16%) and three levels of vitamin E (0, 100, 1000 mg/kg) were supplemented in a 2×3 factorial arrangement. In the third feeding trial, three levels of oil oxidation (11.7, 56.3, 111.5 meq/kg) and dietary vitamin E (0, 100, 1000 mg/kg) were used in an 3×3 factorial arrangement. Adequate levels of dietary vitamin E increased growth performance of Labeo rohita when compared to the high levels of vitamin E. Also supplementation of vitamin E linearly increased the liver and muscle α-tocopherol level. The thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and antioxidant enzyme activities were decreased with adequate vitamin E supplementation, which increased proportionately with increase in vitamin E concentrations. The percentages of poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were higher in vitamin E supplemented diets than control. In the second feeding trial, fish fed the 16% lipid diets showed significantly higher growth than fish fed the 8% lipid diets. Increasing the dietary supplemental levels of fish oil decreased (p<0.05) the liver α-tocopherol content, but had no effect on muscle α-tocopherol level. The TBARS and antioxidant enzyme activities increased with increasing dietary fat levels. The PUFA percentages increased significantly with increased levels of dietary fish oil. In third feeding trial, growth of fish fed fresh fish oil and low oil oxidation level were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of fish fed highly oxidized oil. Among highly oxidized oil (111.5 meq/kg) containing treatments, fish feeding on 1000 mg/kg vitamin E showed better growth performance. Oil oxidation caused a significant reduction in the concentrations of α-tocopherol in fish liver and muscles. Ingestion of oxidized oil resulted in higher TBARS levels, antioxidant enzyme activities and muscular PUFA, in particular, DHA while dietary vitamin E supplementation abrogated these effects. In conclusion, vitamin E supplementation reduced the lipid peroxidation, enhanced the growth performance and improved the meat quality of L. rohita fingerlings irrespective of the level and quality of fish oil; however, the required level of vitamin varied depending upon dietary level of fish oil and level of oil oxidation
