The study primarily represents the state of the teachers’ professional development in English Language Teaching (ELT) at higher levels in a country where overall higher education has been passing through a critical phase of development and reform since 2001. The study mainly evaluated the effectiveness of the short-term courses of the ELTR Project Phase-1 for teachers’ professional development. These courses were offered under the Faculty Development, Research and Publications, Testing and Evaluation and the CALL sub-committees. The study was mainly carried out with the help of a detailed questionnaire administered to the randomly selected 740 trainees, asking them about different aspects of the courses. The researcher recorded semi-structured interviews from twenty resource persons and five trainees each from CALL and EAP courses, during and after 6 months, to evaluate the overall effectiveness of these courses for teachers’ professional development. The researcher recorded semi-structured interviews from five heads of the English departments and from three HEC officials to further probe into the effectiveness of these courses. The researcher applied Chi -Square test and also observed and analyzed three available short courses on CALL, Research and Testing to cross-validate the findings obtained through the questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Finally, the researcher analyzed sample documents like outlines of course modules and certain pertinent reports using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six phase model to see the effectiveness of the teachers’ professional courses and concerned activities. The researcher found that teachers’ professional development courses were effective to some extent as the trained teachers could improve upon their teaching methods and increase and update their knowledge. However, the ELTR Project could have made these courses more successful through ensuring need-based and merit-based selection, appointment of resource persons on merit, provision of the same state-of-the-art facilities to the trainees at their workplaces as at the training settings, and finally by making the resource persons accountable by at least informing them (the trainees) that they would be followed up for internal or external evaluations. At the end, some recommendations have been made for improving the teachers’ professional development courses and for bringing in positive changes in terms of planning and implementation of future ELT Projects.

The Holy Prophet (Saw) as an Embodiment of Peace: An Analysis of Extracts From the Text of Al-Quran and Sunnah

In view of the geo-politics of the twenty first century where despite the concerted efforts of the international community to maintain peace on the globe, the still is confronted with the wars and its worst consequences. One of the reasons for such unhappy developments is that religion is most of the time considered as war-mongering. This may be somewhat true in case of certain cases; however, the case of Islam is totally different. The very word Islam stands for peace. It was revealed on Prophet Muhammad (SAW) who remained an icon of peace and mercy for the whole Mankind. This paper was an attempt to highlight some of the guiding injunctions of Islam together with the peace-related overtures of the Last Prophet of Allah. The problem under study was to explore, “The Holy Prophet (SAW) as an embodiment of Peace—an analysis of extracts from the text of The Holy Quran and Sunnah”. The objectives were: 1, to highlight some of the commandments of Islam regarding peace; and 2, to pinpoint some of the peace-promoting instances from the life of the Holy Prophet (SAW). The methodology adopted was to highlight some of the peace-promoting text of the Holy Quran coupled with instances from the life of the Holy Prophet (SAW). It was found that Islam stands as religion for peace. The last messenger of Allah was a complete embodiment of peace in His disposition and practice. Hence the very text of the Holy Quran as ell as the life of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) provide some very cherished ideals and norms for the establishment of a peaceful global community.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polyurethane Acrylate Copolymers

In this modern era, a world without synthetic polymers is incredible. In spectacle of rapidly depleting natural resources, synthetic polymers have become an elegant alternative. Polyurethanes are one of these, that have been developed as an exclusive class of polymers with wide variety of applications in foams, elastomers, coatings, sealants, textile finishing, automotive, insulation and footwear industries. Polyurethane based coating systems have a proven record in the coatings industry dominating the market in some applications because they exhibit a high level of quality. These coatings allow high variability of the property profile and can be fitted for a specific application by changing, the chemical structure of the constituents or the molecular weight and degree of branching of the chains. Polyurethane coatings are in general more expensive. Polyurethane chemistry permits the amalgamation of functional groups which can be used to modify properties. To take advantage of polyurethane film-forming properties, a combination with cheaper materials is now a common practice in the coating market, leading to new different products. Of the most popular second components, one is the acrylic dispersion and the new product combines the excellent mechanical and chemical properties of the polyurethane resin with the low price of the acrylic component. In current project polyurethane coatings were prepared by the copolymerization of polyurethane with the butyl acrylate. Different series of polyurethane acrylate copolymers containing different monomeric constituents i.e. diisocyanates and polyols, in different proportions with butyl acrylate were synthesized by emulsion polymerization and characterized successfully. The synthesis of these copolymers was completed in three steps i.e. synthesis of polyurethane prepolymers, introduction of unsaturated sites at the free reactive ends of polyurethane prepolymers and copolymerization of vinyl terminated polyurethane prepolymers with n-butyl acrylate. Also, these copolymers were applied on textile fabric as finishing agent and their effect was assessed by different standard textile tests.
