In order to produce good financial results and improve operational performance, a firm should effectively and efficiently manage its working capital. Working capital policies and practices vary from firm to firm which leads to variation in profitability. A difference in working capital practices is observed on the basis of size and location. Review of existing literature indicates that this variation in working capital management practices among various categories of firms such as small, medium, large, domestic and multinationals has not yet been adequately researched, particularly in developing countries like Pakistan. The study uses secondary data of 153 listed firms on Pakistan Stock Exchange for 10 years (2004-2013). These firms are categorized on the basis of size viz. small, medium and large; as well as location such as domestic and multinationals. R-square shows that highest explanatory power of the independent and control variables included in the model based on market to book ratio occur in multinational firms where dependent variable is explained to the extent of 41% whereas based on return on assets it is 26% in medium firms. Results show that working capital policy significantly affects firms’ performance. Multinomial logistic regression model was used to identify factors significantly affecting WC policy. Logistic regression results show that ROA and MC are the variables determining the WC policy of firms significant at 5% and 1% respectively. Overall, correct predictions for the study employing logistic regression model work out to be 71.9% showing fitness of the model used for analysis.

Curriculum Overload at College level: Probing its Repercussions on EFL Learners and Academics

English language is considered the core of success in Pakistani education system. The most important task of English teachers at college level in Pakistan is to develop competence and better understanding of English language in students. However, curriculum overload is the biggest hurdle in enhancing language proficiency because it keeps teachers and students under pressure. J.B McDonald elucidates curriculum as a fount of quality teaching and better learning experience for students by identifying an apt syllabus and assessing their learning outcomes. This paper looks into the causes and consequences of curriculum overload on English teachers at college level in particular and on students in general. This study helps in understanding the issue through teachers and students’ point of view. Data were collected through questionnaires based on close and open-ended questions. These questionnaires were filled by the English teachers and students of public and private colleges of Faisalabad city. Macdonald's Model has been adapted to understand the role of curriculum in education. He takes curriculum as a social and cognitive system for proper planning and instruction in academia. This study recommends certain measures to overcome the overload of curriculum on teachers and students. It will open new vistas of research, as less work has been done in this regard, particularly at college level.

Parameters Estimation of the 3-Component Mixture Models of Exponential Family under Bayesian Paradigm

This thesis is concerned with the problem of estimating the parameters of the 3-component mixture models of the members of one parameter Exponential family using type-I right censored data under Bayesian paradigm. The models include: (i) Exponential distribution (ii) Rayleigh distribution (iii) Pareto distribution and (iv) Burr Type-XII distribution. In the Bayesian perspective, these 3-component mixtures of distributions get either no or least consideration in literature so far. Also, the reliability analysis of the 3-component mixtures of distributions is presented in this study. The expressions for the Bayes estimators and their posterior risks using the non-informative and the informative priors under squared error loss function, precautionary loss function and DeGroot loss function are derived. The censored sampling environment is considered due to its popularity in reliability theory and survival analysis. When prior information is available, elicitation of hyperparameters through prior predictive method based on predictive probabilities is given. The posterior predictive distribution for a future observation and the Bayesian predictive interval are constructed. In addition, the limiting expressions for the Bayes estimators and posterior risks under different loss functions are derived. To examine, numerically, the performance of the Bayes estimators under different loss functions, we have simulated Bayes estimates and posterior risks for different sample sizes, test termination times and parametric values. Further, to highlight the practical significance of each 3- component mixture, the Bayesian analysis of the real life mixture data sets is conducted. At the end of this thesis, the conclusion is presented. Some recommendations for future research are also given.
