The purpose of this research is to study financial derivatives from multiple angles. It involves a critical examination of the features and functioning of financial derivatives. It also evaluates the impact of derivatives on the financial system and economy, primarily in the context of various financial crises, including Global Financial Meltdown of 2008. Derivatives are innovative financial instruments having features such as value derivation, leverage, and future settlement. The primary functions of derivatives trade include hedging, speculation, arbitrage, leverage, cost reduction, liquidity, and window dressing. This research is conducted in the context of global scenario rather than for particular economy. It incorporates mixed method approach, which is in line with the theoretical underpinnings of pragmatism philosophy. Primarily, it revolves around qualitative analysis, for which systematic literature review technique is adopted. Purposeful sampling and Snowball sampling strategies are applied for the selection of research paper. Quantitative analysis along with numerical facts about global derivatives trade are presented as empirical evidences; EGARCH technique is applied to investigate the impact of derivatives in enhancing the inflation volatility, whereas VECM is applied to check the causality between spot and futures prices. Case study approach is adopted for the various sections of the thesis. Derivatives contracts generally lack the fundamental constituents of contract theory. Contingent nature of the derivatives allows them to be reported off-balance sheet; modelling based valuation of derivatives is also a complex mechanism. These problematic features have made derivatives an obscured financial product. The regulatory framework for derivatives has number of issues, such as multiplicity of regulations as well as regulators, which create opportunities for regulatory arbitrage. Derivatives are arguably a source of disturbance for real economy; hyperinflation, large scale speculation, exchange rate and interest rate volatility, fragility of financial markets, and banking system etc., get aggravated in the presence of derivatives. Repercussions of derivatives are evident either at larger or smaller scale in various economic crises such as worldwide stock market crash (1987), Japanese Asset Price Bubble (1986-1994), East Asian Currency Crisis (1997), Dot-com Bubble (1996-2001), and Subprime Crisis (2007). Corporations such as Enron, and Hedge Funds like LTCM, were also the victims of derivatives. Subprime Crisis was transformed into Global Financial Meltdown of 2008 mainly because of unprecedented trading volume of derivatives. The domination of derivatives trade has inculcated immense systematic risk in the contemporary global financial setup.

Those who abused the Prophet r, and accused him of violence, slander and falsely, had never listened to the call of the mind. They should never ignore the one of the most important verses of the holy book revealed from the Creator, Allah Almighty, that Prophet Muhammad r has been sent to the mankind purely for offering mercy. How can they neglect the fact that the Prophet r himself said if he was a leader without mercy, people around him did not accompany him. When we study the life of Prophet r, we observe that all factions of the society, whether they are slaves or independent, Muslims or non- Muslims, men or women, beloved friends or worst enemies; they were behaved not only with extreme justice, but with utmost mercy. So we find that it was a mercy in everything, in education, in advocacy and in legislation, in war and peace, in the family and society, and in all walks of life, etc. In this article, aspect of mercy in the personality of holy Prophet Muhammad r has been discussed in detail. Opinions of the Orientalists are also presented in the article. Aspect of mercy was not only an ingredient of the personality of Prophet r, but He r also made mercy a part of his followers’ personalities. So history witnesses that there was an elongated reign of peace in the world, whenever Muslim Rulers were in power.

Design of Cognitive Driven Adaptive E-Learning Environment Using Individual Differences

The educational system of Pakistan surrounds with several problems. Among them, the most alarming issue is the poor learning outcomes of students. The predominant cause of such worst condition is weak traditional learning environment. To cater chronic educational issues the world around us strongly rely on technology because E-learning is being considered as widely recognized alternative to handle the shortcomings of traditional learning environment. Adaptive Educational Systems (AESs) are specialized class of e-learning which aimed to deliver individualized learning experience. The AESs integrate learner‟s individual characteristics with the help of user modeling techniques to impart instruction to each individual in accordance to his/her learning needs. Numerous AESs have already been developed in the pursuit of quality learning experience. These systems consider single aspect of learner such as learning styles. The success rate of such systems is reasonably low as their impact in terms of improving learning outcomes is still unclear. The researchers affirmed that considering a single aspect of learner is not enough to positively impact the learning process. It is therefore suggested to conduct further research considering other effective parameters along with learning styles. In this thesis, an adaptive learning system is being proposed considering combination of multiple sources of personalization including prior knowledge, Working Memory Capacity (WMC) and learning styles. An experiment has been conducted using sample size of (184) students to evaluate the impact of proposed approach in comparison to traditional learning environment. The student sample was equally divided into control and experimental groups. The control and experimental groups further consisted of subgroups formed on the basis of learners cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics identified using standard instruments. The experimental subgroups learned the subject contents with proposed adaptive learning system whereas control subgroups learned in traditional classroom environment. The results revealed that participants of experimental subgroups outperformed in terms of learning outcomes and learning efficiency than their counterparts of control subgroups.
