This study intended to investigate the behavior of human as an investor by capturing and envisioning the reasons for stock market participation. It examines the impact of investor‟s personality and emotional quotient on stock market participation. This study add to existing body of literature by investigating the moderating impact of financial sophistication, trading experience and gender between investor‟s personality emotional quotient and stock market participation. The study was cross sectional with time lag data collection, used multiple regressions and archival research methodology. Andrew Hayes Process was operationalize to measure the moderating relationships among the variables. The use of regression and Andrew Hayes Process helped to empirically test and validate the research hypotheses. The study finds that there was positive impact of extroversion and openness to experience on stock market participation. On the basis of literature it was hypothesized that there was negative relationship between conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism and stock market participation. The statistical results also validate and extended the support for the proposed hypothesis. It was also hypothesized that there is positive impact of motivation and self-awareness on stock market participation. Statistical results demonstrated positive impact of motivation on stock market 3 participation. While results for self-awareness were counter to the expectation and showed negative association with stock market participation. The study concludes that financial literacy, trading experience and gender can modify the relationship between some basic personality traits and stock market participation. It showed that, on the one hand, behavior finance is not completely predetermined by one‟s DNA, on the other, it also points out exactly what other traits that are not so influenced by financial literacy, trading experience and gender. Perhaps this implies that these traits are more predetermined by one‟s innate characteristics. The current study has used quantitative data for analysis, using qualitative interviews to gather more improved information would be an addition in the literature with influence of family resource management theory. The study has implications for policy makers and government at micro and macro level. The present study provides valuable insights and protection to vulnerable groups by exploring the financial behavior of individuals in case of financial planning and investments. Study provides interdisciplinary contribution by extending the usefulness of Big Five taxonomy and establishing personality as a viable approach with respect to stock market participation. The results of the study are in line with the Western settings and can be well generalized to the Pakistani settings. Furthermore the findings of this research provide firm grounds for future research. Keywords: financial sophistication, personality, emotional quotient, trading experience, stock market participation.

SCHOOL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT COMPETENCIES FOR IMPROVED ADMINISTRATIVE EFFECTIVENESS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN RIVERS STATE NIGERIA

The study investigated school business competencies for improved administrative effectiveness in Public Secondary School in Rivers State. Three research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The population of the study was 286 principals in all the public secondary schools in Rivers State. A sample of 166 through a stratified random technique was determined using the Taro Yamane formula. The instrument of the study was a self design instrument captioned “School Business Management Competencies Questionnaire (SBMCQ) and Principal Administrative Effectiveness (PAE) with the reliability coefficients of 0.77 and 0.84 respectively which was determined through the Cronbach alpha statistics. Mean scores and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was sued to test the hypothesis. It was discovered that the highest kind of business available in the public school is related to cafeteria / canteen services and that also to a high extent, resourcefulness as a business management competency improves administrative effectiveness in public secondary schools in Rivers State. It concluded that for the school administrators to manage the school business effective (administrative effectiveness), they must possess the core competence of resourcefulness, conceptual thinking and administrative organisation. It was recommended among others that the principal should have a comprehensive understanding of the school complex nature and also think critically at both abstract and concrete level to harmonize a rather multifaceted business challenges in the school and proffer realistic solutions.

Modification and Characterization of Wild and Commercial Gums for Their Pharmaceutical Potential

The present study was conducted to investigate the pharmaceutical potential of wild and commercial gums. After the process of purification, Dalbergia sissoo and Acacia modesta were selected for the present research among the eight initially selected gums. For the use of gum as binder in tablet the physiochemical characteristics such as pH, fluorescence analysis, swelling index and rheological studies were determined. Both selected gums were acidic in nature. D. sissoo and A. modesta showed light brown and creamy color in fluorescent analysis, respectively. The viscosity measurements were made by the rheological analysis and D. sissoo and A. modesta provide different rheological pattern. The aqueous solution of crude A. modesta was more viscous than D. sissoo. Carbohydrates were present in high concentrations determined through proximate and biochemical analysis. The elemental profiles of crude gums were studied by the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and significant number of elements was recorded. Crude gums exhibited a number of drawbacks in their application that can be overcome by hydrolyzed and modified to improve the functional properties of biopolymers. The selected gum were hydrolyzed (acidic, basic and enzymatic) and modified (polyacrylamide grafting and carboxymethylation). The antioxidant activities of crude, hydrolyzed and modified gums were determined and the selected samples exhibited significant antioxidant potential. The antimicrobial, toxicological studies viz. antimutagenic and hemolytic analyses were performed. All the tested gums samples exhibit good antibacterial activity. All samples were found non-mutagenic to Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and TA 100, and did not show significant hemolytic activity. The structural characterization was carried out by scanning electron microscope, 12 thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning colorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction. The change in viscosity after hydrolysis and modification was analyzed by performing the flow test. There was a decrease in viscosity of crude gum after hydrolysis and modification. Gum based silver-nanoparticles were prepared on the basis of green chemistry principle and possess important microbial applications. Nanoparticles prepared by using both gum showed synergistic high antibacterial activity. The potential of D. sissoo and A. modesta to be used as tablet binder was determined. Bulk and tapped density, hausner’s ratio and carr’s index of the prepared granules were studied. After the formation of tablets, the weight uniformity, hardness, friability, disintegration time and drug release were determined. Hydroxypropyl Methycellulose (HPMC) is used as standard binder. The prepared tablets using gums showed faster and slower dissolution profiles in the same dissolution system. The crude gums have the highest dissolution rate. While the dissolution rate was decreased in the case of modified and hydrolyzed gum samples. The crude gums showing slower release can be useful in sustained release tablets as release controlling polymer / viscoslysing agent. And the hydrolyzed and modified gums having faster release rate are helpful in conventional tablet formulation. The current research comprehensively explored the selected gums for their application as biobinder as well as matrix for nanoparticles studies. In future, these results of selected gum may be used in pharmaceutical field on the pilot or industrial scale as biobinder and other applications like prebiotic for probiotics and green material for nanoscience etc.
