This study investigated the role of gender and the game of power structures in Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and Candida by focusing on the functional use of language, and it is conducted with the viewpoint that Shaw highlighted Postfeminist tendencies through the construction of gender in his plays. The study is revisionist or rereading of Bernard Shaw in the light of Structural Functional model, which is based on the models provided by Sinclair and Coulthard and Carter and Burton. It examined the conversation in which the principal characters were involved by analyzing their acts, moves, exchanges and transactions. The results obtained from the analysis of both plays are highly revealing. In Pygmalion, there is a role reversal and the acts, moves and exchanges which are quite peculiar to Professor Higgins are adopted by Eliza towards the end of the play: throwing the slippers as an act of liberation. The study shows that Eliza’s sex remains the same, but her gender changes towards the end of the play when she decides to marry Freddy. In Candida, the maternal aspect of women is emphasized and recommended which refers to Shaw’s ambivalent attitude towards feminism as he tries to uphold patriarchy. The present study is a contribution to the field of language and gender issues that begins with the frameworks of deficient to dominance and difference. But the study tends to move away from an essentialist framework that regards gender as a fixed entity to a constructionist one that considers gender as a fluid social construct residing in interaction. As a result, the study reinforces Butler’s concept of gender as performative, that is, gender is a process which is neither complete nor consummate. Thus, the study upholds libratory and postfeminist tendencies as it helps to identify unequal gender relationship and sheds light on the maternal role of the female. This research is complementary to other approaches of text and is useful for students and teachers because it provides an objective way to explore and construct a response to a text independently. In other words, it equips us with a tool through which we can verify the subjective interpretation of a text made through thematic studies.

۷/ ربیع الاوّل ۱۴۱۴ھ مطابق ۲۶/ اگست ۱۹۹۳ء بروز جمعرات کو نیک و برگزیدہ عالم دین، اسلامی مصنف اور ملّتِ اسلامیہ کے ہمدرد و غم خوار جناب شمس الرحمن نوید عثمانی یوپی کے نوابی شہر رامپور میں اچانک انتقال فرماگئے۔ انا ﷲ وانا الیہ راجعون۔
مرحوم مولانا شمس الرحمن نویدؔ عثمانی حضرت مفکر ملّت مفتی عتیق الرحمن عثمانی کے چچیرے چھوٹے بھائی تھے اور راقم الحروف کی والدہ مرحومہ سے بھی ان کی قریبی رشتے داری تھی گویا ان سے راقم کے کئی رشتے تھے۔ وہ راقم کے چچا بھی، بھائی بھی، ماموں بھی اور پھوپھا بھی تھے۔ بڑے ہی جیّد عالم تھے، اسلامی مسائل پر انھیں بَلا کا عبور حاصل تھا۔ جدید علوم کے شناسا و ماہر تھے۔ سائنس اور قرآن پر ان کی معرکۃ الآرا کتاب علم داں طبقے میں بڑی دلچسپی کے ساتھ پڑھی گئی اور پسند کی گئی۔ وید اور قرآن پر بھی انھوں نے ٹھوس علمی کام کیا ہے۔ ادارہ ندوۃ المصنفین دہلی کے ترجمان ـ’’برہان‘‘ میں ان کے علمی و ادبی و تحقیقی اور پُراز معلومات مضامین ہر خاص و عام سے داد تحسین حاصل کرتے رہے ہیں۔ مرحوم نویدؔ عثمانی جماعت اسلامی ہند کے رکن خاص تھے۔
حضرت مفکر ملّت مفتی عتیق الرحمن عثمانی کا بڑا ہی ادب و احترام کرتے تھے اور جب حضرت مفتی صاحب کے انتقال کی خبر سنی تو آہ کے ساتھ ان کے منہ سے بے ساختہ جملہ نکلا: ’’آج ملّتِ اسلامیہ یتیم ہوگئی‘‘۔ مسلمانانِ ہند کا سچا قائد، رہبر و غم خوار وہ مفتی عتیق الرحمن عثمانی کو کہا کرتے تھے۔ ان کی وفات کے بعد انھوں نے یہ بھی کہا تھا کہ اب دیکھنا ملّتِ اسلامیہ ہند کو کن کن مسائل سے دوچار ہونا پڑے گا۔ چنانچہ ان کا یہ اندیشہ و خیال آگے چل...

The Role Of Attachment Style And Marital Quality In Attachment Injury Couples

The attachment system is thought to facilitate relationship goals by motivation seeking and bonding activities with significant others, particularly under times of stress (Bowlby, 1982). Attachment theory has also contributed to further understanding the marital relationship in terms of profound psychological and physiological interdependence. It is perhaps this interdependence that causes damage to the quality of attachment relationship. Hence, attachment injury is defined as “a specific incident or event in which one partner is unresponsive and inaccessible when one partner cries out for help in extreme need” (Johnson & Makinen, 2001). Therefore, marital distress or breakup in couple’s relationships does not happen suddenly, so understanding of attachment injury in relation to individual’s marital quality and attachment style would help practitioners to be equipped for appropriate and effective inventions. Further it would also help counsellors and mental health professionals to be familiar with the complexities of the topic by dealing with consequences of an attachment injury ethically and competently.  Therefore our study aimed at examining the prevalence and nature of attachment injury and its effect on marital quality, in a group of married heterosexual couples. It also attempted to associate attachment styles with and without attachment injury in couples. The study employed cross-sectional exploratory design with a set of self-administered measures. The sample comprised of 400 married individuals from urban Bangalore. Statistical results showed those individuals who were experiencing attachment injury are associated with poor marital quality. It was also seen that attachment injury was found to be associated with gender and insecure attachment style. Therefore our findings suggest that poor marital quality with insecure attachment style plays an important role in attachment injury over time. Based on the attachment style, further intervention strategies and effective programs should be designed for marital counselling. And marital enrichment programs may be useful to enhance marital quality to prevent the marital distress or breakups.

Efficient Music Fingerprinting for Music Speech Segregation

Since decade, a lot of music fingerprinting and speech segregation algorithms have exhaled. Music speech segregation includes music identification and followed by speech segregation. This becomes challenging in the presences of the noisy environment and noisy sample case. A rapid development has taken place in the field of multimedia content analysis. Music information retrieval applications increased the emphases on the development of music fingerprinting algorithms. Noise affects the efficiency and accuracy of the audio information retrieval algorithms. This research thesis presents a deep analysis of music fingerprinting and speech segregation algorithms. A novel algorithm is presented for music fingerprinting which is used for efficient speech segregation in which music fingerprinting is performed over a noisy audio sample. This research work proposes a system that performs music fingerprinting in-depth evolving the speech segregation processes in presence of background noise. Noise is removed from the audio signal using layered separation model of the recurrent neural network. Music fingerprinting is performed on the basis of pitch based acoustic features classified using distributed dictionary based features learning model. The classified music is processed for speech segregation after noise removal using layered separation model. Speech is segregated using vocal based acoustic features. Features are classified using improved dictionary based fisher algorithm. Structured based classes are used for the classification process. The systematic evaluation of the proposed system for music fingerprinting and speech segregation produces competitive results for three datasets (i.e. TIMIT, MIR-1K, and MusicBrainz), and the results indicate the strength of the proposed system. The proposed system produces significantly better results when the qualitative and quantitative analysis is carried out over the standard datasets showing the better efficiency of our proposed system from the past systems.
