This dissert ation aims to understand the identit y constructions that accompany Pakistan‘s securit y related foreign policy collaboration with USA. This research is motivated by three question s. Firstl y, can an appropriate theoretical framework be designed to conduct th is inquiry? Secondl y, what were the identity constructions that attempted to accommodate Pakistan‘s collaboration with USA? Thirdl y, w ere there any contradictions in the identit y constructions that accompanied the collaboration? A review of literature has shown that not much scholarl y work has been undertaken on the identit y of Pakistan and no scholarl y literature could be found to have focused on the dissertation‘s topic. This research is significant because it will help advance the understanding of Pakistan‘s foreign policy and will illuminate aspects of Pakistan‘s relation with USA. Using a constructive theoretical framework the dissertation looks at three distinct periods of securit y collaboration between Pakistan and USA, which cumulativel y span thirt y seven years. The findings from the research illustrate that during the first period of cooperation with USA, Pakistani identit y constructions sought to build convergences around shared values of democracy and progress. In the second period the focus shift ed to Islam and saving Muslims. In the third period the identit y constructions focus ed on projecting a moderate Islamic world view and distancing Pakistan from radical Islam. Islam is an aspect of identit y that is important during the three periods of Pakis tan‘s cooperation with USA. However, Islam is invoked in different manners 12and, overall, no single identit y construct anchor s the cooperation. The Pakistani attempts at identit y constructions are weakened because of inherent contradictions. These include the general lack of support b y USA for Muslim countries of the Middle East , the divergence between USA‘s support for democracy and Pakistan‘s intermittent dictatorships , and the comprise of Pakistan‘s sovereignty that comes with Pakistan‘s support for the USA led War on Terror.

Orientalists have always denied the acceptance of the divinity and authenticity of Qur’an. For this purpose, they have presented multifarious objections to prove the Qur’an as a discourse of Muhammad r which he learnt from the Christian monks and derived it from the judeo-Christian sources. They specially mention that Muhammad r was not an illiterate person he was rather a pupil of the monks. In this way, their aim is to prove false the claim of the miraculous (I’jaz) style of the Qur’an. We have proved in this study that according to Quran, Tafaseer and Hadiths of Prophet r, history and logic, that Muhammad r since his birth until his death, was illetrate, did not know how to read or write. In this paper, an effort has been made to examine the Western arguments and deduce the actual position in this matter. The basic and fundamental sources have been used to precede the discussion.

The Media and Public Opinion in Kenya: the Impact of Print Media Coverage of the Grand Coalition Government

This study sought to investigate the impact of media coverage of the coalition government and how it influences public opinion. The objectives of the study focused on the role played by the print media in determining how the public views the coalition government, the relationship between media coverage and public opinion was investigated and the impact of media framing on public perception. The study explored the possible impact of this coverage of grand coalition government covering the period starting from December 1512008 to August 31512009. As part of the theoretical framework, the study applied the agenda setting theory, decision making theory and information processing theory of communication to underscore how the nature, quality and delivery of information influences public perception. The study was conducted through a survey .200 questionnaires were administered through the help of qualified research assistants to respondents purposively drawn from the middle class people living in Nairobi to ensure they reach those who are exposed to the print media. Out of these, 140 questionnaires were filled and returned 140 respondents. The data gathered was both qualitative and quantitative data to establish the relationship between media coverage and public perception of the government. The data collected was analyzed using Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) technique. The research findings form part of this final research report The study found that the public rely a lot on the media for interpretation of political news and events. This is because the media is the most highly trusted information source. This is because majority of the people believe the news stories are accurate and balanced. Sustained negative coverage has a direct relationship impact public perception since the public base their decisions based on the negative content. Consistent exposure to negative content causes positive public opinion and rating of the government to diminish because there is no alternative information to balance this. The study further established that there has been very little coverage of the achievements of the coalition government but too much focus on its failures and mistakes, this has led the public to believe the Coalition government has done little or nothing and rating of government performance in critical areas to be ranked very poorly. The language, labels and frames used by the media to describe the government and political events tends to influence public perception because they provide the lenses through which the public looks at the government
