The purpose of the study was to identify the impact of livestock potential and prospects through income generation, women participation and job creation as regard to difficulties and constraints to achieve the prosperity and development in Balochistan; the province of Pakistan. This study is focused on the potential of livestock, especially small ruminants for the development and prosperity through different factors such as; poverty reduction and better living standard of Balochistan. Study also examined the moderating role played by different constraint associating with financial, marketing, environmental and government constraints in the way of prosperity and development. The results indicated that potential and prospects had a direct positive influence on prosperity and development through various variables. However, the livestock prosperity was negatively related to livestock constraints including financial, marketing, environment and role of government constraints. Income generation ability and job creation were also found to have a strong positive impact on livestock potential and prospects.Women participation in livestock rearing activities is also positively related to livestock potential and with the prosperity and development. Nevertheless, women empowerment did not support the data of the study.Number of constraints were in the study strongly negative to prosperity and development. Hence, income generation with saving ability, job creation, women participation and poverty reduction were positively associated with potential and prosperity of livestock. They played more vital role in prosperity and development outcomes in the study. This study indicated empirical evidence of the impact of livestock prosperity and development through livestock especially small ruminants in Balochistan. That is, the livestock has the potential for the prosperity and development in the province and has significance role in boosting up the economy. Therefore, both potential, and prosperity played vital role in the provincial economy of the province. Study provides guideline to help policy makers, livestock holders and all other stake holders to better understand the livestock potential and constraints in the way to development and prosperity. Topic carries its significance because of no industrial development in the province and due to reliance of major population on livestock development in Balochistan. The rationale to emphasis on sheep and goat is due to their large share in Balochistan economy; they are the main livestock type in the province. The present data will serve as guideline and foundation for other studies in future. This research study will also be valuable to the investors to invest in livestock, which can lead to substantial improvements in the quantity and, more importantly, the quality to export livestock in the region.

Competency and Needs of Technical Vocational Teachers in the Division of Aklan

This research aimed to assess the general and technical competency of Technical Vocational Education (TVE) teachers in the schools Division of Aklan. It also determined the competency needs and gaps in teaching TVE in the implementation of the program. The study was participated by 118 TVE teachers. Mixed-methods research design using sequential strategy was employed in this study. The Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers was used as guide for assessing the general level of competency while self-assessment guide of TESDA was used to assess the level of technical competency. The quantitative data were used as bases in the conduct of focus group discussions to triangulate the responses in the survey. The general competency level of TVE teachers was described as “highly proficient” while the technical competency level was reported on the “advanced” level. The gaps identified were: (1) teacher-subject mismatch, (2) inadequate skills in applying math and science principles in technical training, (3) struggle in promoting understanding of global labor markets, (4) inability to lead workplace communication (5) lack of content knowledge and pedagogy, (6) lack of competence in assessment and reporting, (7) insufficient trainings related to area of specialization, and (8) expired and unaligned national certificates (nc). The competency needs identified were:(1) activities that would enhance competency, (2) motivation and opportunities to acquire/enhance, and apply competency, and (3) renewed professionalism and rejuvenated teaching advocacy and calling.

Studies on Molecular Determinants of Stem Rust in Wheat Triticum Aestivum

Almost 90% of the wheat is facing the threat of stem rust (Puccinia graminis) worldwide. In Pakistan, most of the farmers tend to grow old wheat varieties, which are susceptible to the disease. Replacement of older varieties with high yielding and modern genetically bred varieties will protect farmers against the inevitable attack of stem rust and other diseases. The inevitability of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt) migration from Iran to Pakistan, coupled with the presence of dangerous new races of yellow rust and leaf rust, are of such importance that their molecular surveillance and rust resistant varieties are now required to improve genetically. Constantly evolving new variants of plant pathogens pose a threat to wheat production. To overcome this, lot of efforts have been made to better understand molecular aspects of resistance to disease and virulence factors that promote the onset of disease. There are many genes identified and characterized, which have resistance against stem rust disease to various levels. They include Sr gene family. Screening of these Sr gene family and some other genes (RPG genes) was done against wheat germplasm. We screened 108 wheat cultivars for different reported resistant genes. Frequency of Sr45 is highest among all other genes which is 65%. Sr35, RPG1 and Sr22 have gene frequency respectively 58%, 37% and 33%. While Sr33 and RPG5 does not appear in any cultivar. Sr22 was selected for isolation and transformation. Today, many transformation methods of resistant genes to various crop plants including wheat are widely used. Sr22 was triggered by inducing Puccinia graminis on healthy resistant varieties such as Mexi-Pak, Auqab 2000 and AS 2002. After inducing Puccinia graminis on healthy plant total mRNA was isolated which was used to synthesize cDNA and full-length gene. The gene was introduced to a commercial susceptible variety, LASANI 2008. Gene gun method was used for transformation. The pCAMBIA2300 plasmid was used having the Kanamycin resistant gene and Cauliflower Mosaic Virus promoter. After transformation, gene integration and expression studies were carried out.
