The present study was conducted to probe the mate selection mechanism among educated working females in Khyber Pakhtunkawa. It is based on the assumption made from filter theory that mate selection is a result of biological, psychological and social filters. Data for the study were collected through pre-tested questionnaire from 278 sampled working females from three public sector universities in Khyber Pakhtunkawa i.e. The University of Agriculture, University of Peshawar and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar. The results were drawn through uni-varate and bi-varate modes of analysis. Results report that the females selected for this study had age between 31-40 years mainly. Majority of them were unmarried, belonging to nuclear family with education up to M.S/M.Phil having father or husband as the head of the household. Results reveal a strong tendency of females towards westernization and materialistic values regarding mate selection. At the same time, they were connected with their value and belief system as well. The females generally preferred well dressed, broad shoulder, clean shaved, fair colored and physically attractive males with the same age and living in nuclear families. Similarly, they preferred to marry with the males having higher socio-economic status, big house, trendy cars, could afford jewelry and educated status. The sampled females from higher socio-economic status did not prefer to marry a male from lower status. Unlikely, the males preferred less educated females due to fear of conflict after marriage.On the other hand, females preferred males from their own ethnic group but at the same time married or intended to marry with males from outside their group instead of having fear of security and divorce. There was more preference to marry educated males because there are more chances of bright future, more understanding and good earning. This was further supported by mass media through providing information about ideal mate. At the same time, females were also found materialistic and independent in making decisions because of media. It also paved way for the emergence of new values regarding mate selection. Religion on other hand could not play a positive role in facilitating females in mate selection despite the fact that they, their parents and family members had absolute knowledge about the female rights given by Islam regarding mate selection; however, they did not follow religion mainly due to patriarchy and cultural influences. The result partially validates the filter theory as biological, psychological and social filters in Pukhtoon society are used by family instead of concerned individuals as inthe West. The study recommends that an awareness campaign through mass media, religious leaders, civil society and political parties needs to be inculcated to inform both the educated and uneducated females and their parents about the nature and impact of religious misinterpretations, western values, materialistic outlook and idealism.

۱۲؍ جون کو اردو تحریک کے قائد پنڈت آنند نرائن ملا چل بسے، وہ ۱۹۰۱؁ء میں لکھنؤ میں پیدا ہوئے تھے، جہاں ان کے والد پنڈت جگت نرائن ملا چوٹی کے وکیل تھے، آنند نرائن ملا بھی تعلیم سے فارغ ہوکر وکالت کے پیشے سے وابستہ ہوئے، پھر الٰہ آباد ہائی کورٹ کے جج اور سینئر جسٹس ہوئے، ۱۹۶۱؁ء میں ریٹائر ہوئے تو سپریم کورٹ میں وکالت شروع کی، لوک سبھا اور راجیہ سبھا کے ممبر بھی منتخب ہوئے لیکن ان کی اصل وجہ شہرت و امتیاز کا باعث یہ ہے کہ وہ اردو کے ایک بڑے شاعر، نقاد، ادیب، سیکولر، انسان دوست اور گنگا جمنی تہذیب کا نمونہ تھے، اردو کی محبت ان کے رگ و پے میں رچی بسی ہوئی تھی اور وہ اس کے اپنی مادری زبان ہونے پر فخر کرتے تھے اور کہتے تھے کہ ’’میں مذہب چھوڑ سکتا ہوں لیکن مادری زبان نہیں چھوڑ سکتا‘‘۔
ان کا شعر ہے:
آتجھ کو گلے لگا کے مٹتی اردو
اک آخری گیت گا لیں تو چلیں
منظوم تصنیفات کے علاوہ بعض نثری تصنیفات بھی یادگار ہیں نظم وغزل دونوں پر قدرت تھی، روایت کی پاسداری کے باوجود کلام میں فرسودگی نہیں۔ مشاعرہ کے شاعر نہ تھے مگر اس میں شرکت کرتے تھے۔ دارالمصنفین کی گولڈن جبلی کے مشاعرہ کی صدارت کی تھی۔ اب غیر مسلموں میں اردو کے ایسے عالم، دانشور اور اس سے گہرا لگاؤ رکھنے والے عنقا ہورہے ہیں اس اعتبار سے ان کی وفات اردو کا واقعی ناقابل تلافی نقصان ہے۔ (ضیاء الدین اصلاحی، جولائی ۱۹۹۷ء)

 

Orientalist Perspectives in Ellis’s Breadwinner Trilogy: A Postcolonial Critique

The study critically engages with the issue of continuity of the orientalist rhetoric in the contemporary literary yields. To establish and substantiate the argument, the researchers have analyzed Deborah Ellis’s Breadwinner Trilogy (2009) that comprises Breadwinner, Parvana’s Journey, and Mud City. All the three fictional narratives claims to have represented the life of the Pakistani and Afghani characters who have been shown to face the existential threats in the wake of the insecurities that have engulfed the region. However, the study contends, the Canadian writer has also given way to the parochial psychological and sociological schema that has been held as the prime representational trope regarding the East, that is, Orientalism. The qualitative and textual approach has facilitated the researchers to negotiate the identified thematic patterns with the interpretive freedom. In this regard, framing the fictional representation into the Saidian critique of the orientalist discourse, the study explicates the reductive approach of the writer and exposes the latent ideological triggers working under the manifest humanist projections. Thus, the study strengthens the postcolonial stance and, therefore, will sharpen the Pakistani students’ understanding of the current socio-literary debates.

Impact Assessment of English Language Support Program at Aku-Ied, in Relation to Learners Needs

The Aga-Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) offers a two-year Master in Education (M.Ed.) program to its cooperating educational institutions in the public and private sectors in several developing countries situated in South and Central Asia and Eastern Africa. The medium of instruction of the M.Ed. course is English. The program is highly interactive in nature. The course participants (CPs) are engaged in writing academic papers, class presentations, classroom discussion and group work, all of which require adequate proficiency in both oral and written English. English is normally taught as a second and third language in the countries from where the CPs come. Therefore, the CPs need to obtain good skills of academic writing, reading, listening and speaking to meet the academic requirements of the M.Ed. program. For that reason, the CPs are supported in their language skills through English Language Support Program (ELSP), eight week Pre-Session Intensive English Language Course (PIELC) as well as On-Going Language Support Course (OLSC) to address their entry level and emerging needs during the course of their studies respectively. The purpose of this research study was to evaluate the outcomes of the two components of the ELSP and analyze the extent to which ELSP prepared the CPs of the M.Ed. class to meet the academic requirements of the M.Ed. program at AKU-IED in English. The study used a questionnaire survey and qualitative research design; Qualitative data was collected through a focus group interview with the CPs of M.Ed class 2005, a semi-structured interview with the coordinator of ELSP and reviewing of some documents. The findings of the study indicated that PIELC was effective for the CPs with relatively upper-intermediate English language proficiency level, as the content for them was more relevant in respect to the requirements of the M.Ed. program. However, The CPs with intermediate and low-intermediate proficiency level found pre-session intensive English language course not very effective as the focus was more on basic elements of language and not on the academic requirements of the M.Ed. program for their groups. While it helped them develop their language skills in general, but it did not prepare the CPs for the M.Ed. program. The CPs' evaluation of OLSC was low, in general. It seemed to be helpful for the CPs with relatively low-intermediate proficiency level to some extent. However, the objectives of OLSC were also not achieved due to various reasons. As a result
