Sindh’s best city in Karachi amid absence of any declared integration policy on part of the ruling elite has been faced with ethnic disharmony which often erupts into colossal ethnic violence taking scores of precious human lives. Though communal problem in the land of Sufis traces its link to the creation of the country in the late 1940s, it was actually the mid 1980s which saw ethnic fissures in the Sindh metropolis get widened with the battle lines being drawn between Pakhtun migrants and Urdu-speaking Mohajirs who started jumping down each other’s throat after a mini-bus ran over a refugee college girl student Bushra Zaidi on April 15, 1985. The provincial capital suffered colossal destructions in terms of loss of precious human lives and properties mainly caused by ethnic violence which started after the unfortunate Bushra Zaidi’s killing. The tragic death of the refugee girl not only changed the face of Sindh metropolis but also affected institutions and individuals including the press and journalists. The research has not only shed extensive light on the causes of ethnic violence in Sindh capital but also dealt with the press coverage of ethnic affairs by conducting textual analysis of national newspapers published in Karachi to decipher whether or not newspapers’ coverage of ethnic affairs has improved. Content analysis of national newspapers—Dawn, Jang, Jasarat and Naw-e-Waqat—of two time periods—1985, 1986, 1987 and 2007, 2008, 2009—has been carried out to see how ethnic affairs were covered by the national press in the mid and late 1980s, and in the late 2000s and whether newspapers’ coverage of ethnic affairs has improved. The result of the content analysis shows that English newspapers coverage of communal issues have improved considering Dawn low percentage points of state nationalism-driven news items among other factors like publishing of more exclusive news regarding ethnic affairs. There is still no finality in this regard amid the changed dynamics prevailed in the city in late 2000s as against the mid and late 1980s when ethnicity was the pressing issue. As for improvement or decline in the coverage of Urdu dailies, though state nationalism driven news items have posted a drop in the second time period, it’s not due to the fact that Urdu journalism has now started believing in fighting for the rights of ethnic minorities but the simple fact is that the city situation changed in the late 2000s with the Urdu dailies likely yet again to opt for news items containing nationalist rhetoric whenever there would be any ethnic conflict between ethnic groups.

Twenty-First Century Regionalism Impact on South Asia

The paper is an attempt to review twenty-first century regionalism and its impact on South Asia, which includes the rising role of China and Pakistan’s pivot status as contributing factors to peace, growth, and development. This coincides with a more south-oriented world. The theory applied is NeoFunctionalism, which explains the European integration and may be used to explain the potential modern South Asian integration process with China as a pre-cursor. This will perhaps be a positive outcome of the twenty-first century regionalism. The paper dwells upon intra-regional integration, sighting Eurasian model of connectivity as an example, and how it can be a role-model for developing countries. The emphasis remains on improved relations between Pakistan and India as a pre-requisite for regionalism to take off in South Asia.

Non-Uniform and Uniform Discrete Multitone Transceivers for the Dsl and the Power Line Channels

Discrete Multitone (DMT) modulation is a popular multicarrier technique adopted for wireline communication, which offers computationally inexpensive channel equalization, based on cyclic prefix, in addition to bit and power loading. A cyclic prefix is pre-appended in multicarrier modulated (MCM) techniques, that helps mitigate the inter-symbol interference due to mul- tipath effect. For channel equalization, a single tap per subcarrier is sufficient to compensate for the channel distortion in the frequency domain, provided the cyclic prefix length is of the order of the channel. This formulates a Zero-Forcing frequency domain equalizer, which com- pensates the channel attenuation with an inverse channel response. However, this method has the shortcoming of enhancing channel noise, where the channel is of low magnitude, in the high frequency range. It has been observed through the studies on channel measurements that most channels display the characteristics similar to that of a lowpass filter. Therefore, the cyclic prefix (CP) based equalization in MCM techniques enhances channel noise, which in turn increases the bit error rate and also reduces the post equalization signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this thesis, as a solution to this problem, hybrid DMT modulation techniques, that is the Uniform and Non-Uniform DMT modulation are proposed and implemented for the DSL and the power line channels. The performance analysis of the proposed modulation techniques in the DSL channel and for the various categories of the power line channel is presented. Since the Non-Uniform and Uniform modulation techniques are hybrid techniques, and their structures are a combination of wavelet filter banks and conventional DMT systems, therefore, the effect of inter-channel crosstalk and its relation with the filter’s order is also investigated. Computational complexity of the hybrid modulation techniques is also derived, and it is found to be greater than that of the conventional DMT system. Moreover, different methods are adopted for quantization of channel noise enhancement. A reconstruction error is derived to ascertain the quantity of channel noise enhancement in different subbands of the communication channel and also for this purpose, post equalization SNR is computed. A modified Non-Uniform DMT transceiver was proposed and implemented for the DSL channel. It is depicted through simulation results that the Non- Uniform DMT modulation shows some improvement in the post equalization SNR, and its modified form gives better performance, however at the cost of reduced data rate. The Uniform DMT modulation technique is proposed with a power-allocation algorithm for different sub- channels of the DSL and the power line channels. The Uniform DMT modulation performance evaluation through simulation results shows significant improvement in SNR in comparison with the conventional DMT system, at the cost of greater computational complexity, for the various DSL and power line channels.
