This study investigated the issue of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in context of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The study focused on exploring CSR related activities of SMEs in the province and their underlying motivations. Moreover, major barriers faced by SMEs in addressing social, economic, and environmental concerns are identified. Mixed-method research methodology is used in two phases of research. The first phase of the research was based on qualitative study which helped in exploring practices of CSR in SMEs along with motivations and barriers. In-depth interviews were conducted from managers and owners of SMEs. Moreover, through adopting ground theory approach, the rich information from interviews was analyzed to extract emerging themes. Qualitative study helped in exploring six major themes related to CSR practice, three major themes on motivations of the CSR, and two themes on barriers of CSR in SMEs. Furthermore, a questionnaire was constructed based on themes emerged during first phase of the study and a conceptual model was formed with relational hypothesis. In the second phase, quantitative methodology is used to test the validity of developed instrument and hypotheses testing. A randomly selected sample of 469 respondents from SMEs was subjected to analysis. Unifactoriality of the constructs was tested with Principal Component Analysis. The results of tests indicated that items related to each construct correlate with each other and hence provide a sufficient evidence of constructs validity. In order to test the relational hypothesis, structural equation modeling (SEM) technique is deployed. Key Words: Corporate Social Responsibility, SMEs, Motivations, Barriers, Mixedmethod research

FUNCTIONAL STATUS AMONG PATIENTS WITH STAGE III PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Aims Of Study: The purpose of the study was to assess the functional capabilities of patients with Stage III Parkinson's disease (PD). Functional status of PD patients declines due to impaired postural reflexes and characteristic loss of balance which became evident at Stage III thus activities of daily living (ADLs) are compromised as the severity of the disease increases. Methodology:  Descriptive case series was conducted on stage III PD patients (n=64). Patients with age ranges from 45 to 75 years were recruited and patients with other neurological issues were excluded. They were assessed using a Functional independence measure scale having reliability 0.95. Results: Out of 64 patients, 75% required minimal assistance and 9.4% required supervision while performing the ADLs. Whereas, 81% of patients need 2 hours of personal care assistance according to burden of care. Limitations & Future Implications: Only functional status of PD patient is determined no exercise regime or intervention were incorporated to assess their impact on the PD patient functional activities. Thus, future studies should be carried out to find the correlation between aerobic exercises and their impact on PD patient level of functional independence. Originality: Information added was all taken from databases and reduced to similarity index and was not submitted to any other journal. Conclusion: Stage III Parkinson’s disease patient required minimal level of assistance while performing tasks of daily living. However, majority of these patients required 2 hours of personal care assistance on average per day to compete with daily living.

A Comparative Analysis of Customer Awareness: Islamic Vs. Conventional Banking Products in Pakistan

Customer awareness plays a pivotal role in developing perceptions about products and Islamic banking products are no exception. This study was aimed at performing a comparative analysis of customer awareness levels about Islamic banking products (IBPs) vs. conventional banking products (CBPs) in Pakistan. A survey was conducted by using a structured questionnaire for this purpose, with close-ended questions adapted from previous studies, using Convenience Sampling method. A total of 285 responses were recorded from walk-in banking customers in both Islamic and Conventional branches in the two cities of Lahore and Sialkot and the data was statistically analyzed in SPSS using paired samples t-Test technique to determine if a statistically significant difference existed in the awareness level towards IBPs and that of CBPs. Overall results show that the awareness level of customers regarding IBPs was lower compared to CBPs. As regards the specific products, awareness level of Musharakah and Ijara was lower than their CBP counterparts, namely Joint Venture and leasing respectively. However, no significant difference was discovered in the awareness level of Mudarabah and Murabaha in comparison to their conventional banking counterparts, namely Passive Partnership and Deferred Payment Sale. The study will be assistive in ascertaining the role of awareness in building a favorable perception about IBPs being Shariah Compliant.
