Procrastination is a complex phenomenon referred towards the postponement of a planned task that can also be defined as an illogical and irrational delay. The study was an attempt to find out the relationship between the phenomenon of academic procrastination and students achievement at university level. The objectives of the study were to identify the tasks in which students procrastinate the most with an exploration of the causes for academic procrastination. Furthermore, the relationship between academic procrastination and students’ achievement was explored. Students’ interest in changing their attitude of academic procrastination was also assessed. The study was a co-relational study. The relationship between academic procrastination and students’ achievement was explored. In typological context, five public sector universities were randomly selected out of 20 public sector universities in Punjab. Multi-stage cluster sampling technique was used and the total 365 M.Phil level students (All students studying in the sampled departments) and twenty five university teachers, teaching at M.Phil level (one teacher from each sampled department) formed sample of the study. Procrastination Assessment Scale for Students (PASS) was adopted to collect quantitative data from the students and semi-structure interviews of the teachers were conducted for qualitative section. Data were collected through mail and personal visits and analyzed by using SPSS. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Major findings and conclusions of the study revealed that majority of the students at university level are the high procrastinators in all the six identified academic tasks. The main causes for academic procrastination were dependency and help seeking, risk-taking, socialization, pleasant verses boring tasks, fail to prioritize, lack of focus, socialization, poor time management, no check and balance from parents, leniency of the teachers, not clear goals, carelessness, and lack of motivation. Strong negative correlation was found between academic procrastination and academic achievement, furthermore, students’ wish to change their attitude of academic procrastination. The study recommended that teachers, parents and students themselves take the responsibility to avoid academic procrastination and a course to overcome the attitude of academic procrastination may be introduced at university level within the framework of mentoring services for building up competency and commitment of students and teachers, through research based powerful programs, conducting empirical studies in sampling physical sciences and professional programs on a larger sample in Punjab and elsewhere, comparison of public and private universities, in-depth case studies of risk cases and developing research based training manual were suggested for further research in this area.

A CORRELATIONAL STUDY BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND READING COMPREHENSION AT ECONOMIC FACULTY OF ALKHAIRAAT UNIVERSITY

This research is a correlational study with two variables – variable X standing for vocabulary mastery and variable Y standing for reading comprehension. There were three research questions: (1) What is the level of correlation between variable X and variable Y; (2) How significant is the contribution that can be given by variable X toward variable Y; and (3) Is there positive correlation between variable X and variable Y? The sample of this research was fifty students of the first semester at Economic Faculty of Alkhairaat University. The instruments were tests and questionnaire. Through tests, it was found that: (1) The level of correlation between variable X and variable Y was strong; (2) The significant contribution given by variable X toward variable Y was 52.8%, meaning variable X gave much contribution to variable Y; and (3) There was positive correlation between variable X and variable Y since the value of r-counted (0.727) was higher than the value of r-table (0.279). Through questionnaire, 46% respondents agreed that vocabulary took a role in helping them to comprehend English texts, meaning the more vocabulary they have, the better they are in comprehending English texts.

Influence of Consumer Innovativeness, Dogmatism, Social Character and Need for Uniques on New Product Adoption: A Rural Perspective

Purpose: This study provides a theoretical framework that explores the personality traits that influence new product adoption in rural environment. Five personality traits form part of the framework, namely; consumer innovativeness, dogmatism, social character (inner and other directed), and need for uniqueness. This study will pave a way in understanding the potential behavior of consumers toward adoption of a newly introduced product in a given environment. Following the conceptualization of NPA, a conceptual model was proposed which represents five hypotheses: two hypotheses were supported and three hypotheses were not supported. Methodology: The data was collected from selected (rural) areas of upper Sindh province of Pakistan using convenient sampling procedure; there were 430 respondents in the sample. Five-point Likert scale was adapted for the study, and a pilot test was used to confirm the validity of the scales and the correctness of the datagathering procedure. Following the data gathering and coding, validity and reliability tests were carried out on the entire sample. Keeping in view various constructs of conceptual model, the proposed hypotheses were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling (AMOS v.20) to test the impact of the constructs on NPA. Findings and contribution of research: The evidence related to the model suggests that consumer innovativeness and need for uniqueness are the dominant factors (traits) in adopting a new product whereas social character (ID /OD), and dogmatism have no significant impact on new product adoption behavior, it suggests that consumer innovativeness and need for uniqueness traits of consumer personality are dominant factors in adopting a new fashion and clothing product in rural market. Research Limitations: First; the results of this study may not be appropriate for generalizing across the majority of Pakistani consumers, and in a global context. Second; the study is focusing only on fashion and clothing product category; third, only selected personality traits are examined in the study. Implications: By examining the potential behavior of rural consumers, the study facilitates the possibility of consumer behavior research that, in new product adoption decision consumer personality (traits) should have a significant contribution, thus providing a better understanding of influence of their personality traits on new product adoption.
