The elementary education in Pakistan was focused even from the creation of Pakistan but the previous successive Govt: could not give appropriate value to elementary education practically. The size of the problem has become now so huge that it cannot be solved merely through Govt. efforts until and unless the participation of every individual is ensured in these efforts against illiteracy. The NGOs started efforts to fight along the govt: and extended helping hand in the matter to support the elementary education. The research study is carried out to see the contribution of NGOs in promoting the elementary education in the southern districts of khyber pakhtunkhwa. The study is descriptive in nature & researcher self-developed questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. The population of the study consisted of all the elementary schools teachers and educational administrative heads in public sector schools of the six districts. For this purpose, 573 samples (370 teachers and 203 heads) were randomly selected as respondents. For statistical treatment, computer based software known as Statistical Package for Social Sciences (S.P.S.S) version 20 was applied. Mean, t-test, standard deviation, one-way ANNOVA and tukey test were used for analysis of data. The responses of teachers and administrative heads of formal as well as non-formal sector showed significant positive views about the role of NGOs in the promotion of elementary education in regard to all five variables “support to school”, “support to parents”, “support to students” and “support to co-curricular activities”. Significance difference was found between the views of male and female teachers regarding the efficiency of NGOs in supporting teachers at elementary level. Gender did not differentiate the NGOs efficiency in “support to school”, “support to parents”, “support to students” and “support to co-curricular activities”. Significance difference was found between the views of rural and urban teachers regarding the efficiency of NGOs. On the whole it is concluded that despite few reservations made by the respondents about some initiatives of NGOs, over all NGOs are performing a valuable role in promoting elementary education and producing conducive environment in public sector schools of KP. The staff of NGOs may be properly trained in streamlining the matters of schools of formal as well as non-formal in a more efficient way.

Men Working in Female-Dominated Professions: A stigma or facilitation?

Gender roles not only keep men and women in different spheres of family and social life but they also promote gender segregation in the education sector and professional life. There is a lot of research being conducted on women working in male dominated professions but there is scarcity of research regarding males working in female dominated professions. This study was conducted to explore the experiences of men working in female dominated professions. The first phase of this study collected quantitative data about the type female-dominated professions in Pakistan. Based on this data in-depth qualitative interviews were done with 5 professionals using snowball sampling: Nurse, Psychologist, Montessori teacher, Makeup artist/ Beautician, and Bus host. Thematic analysis was used to identify sub-themes presented in this study: (i) Reasons or motivation for joining nontraditional profession; (ii) Reaction of near and dear ones; (iii) Positive aspects of female dominated profession; (iv) Challenges of female dominated profession; (v) Professional journey; (vi) Being a minority in female majority; (vii) Struggle to maintain masculinity and (viii) Future aspirations. Study findings can be used to support male entry and retention in female dominated professions.

Cost-Effective Routing & Cooperative Framework for Opportunistic Networks

In Opportunistic Networks most of Internet''s basic assumptions do not hold true. Due to sparse density of nodes and frequent changes in network topology, an endto- end contemporaneous path may not exist. However, sporadic links emerging from coarse-grained mobility of nodes can be construed over a period of time, as presence of a complete path between a pair of nodes. Nodes hold a packet in permanent storage until an appropriate communication opportunity arises, which can help in further forwarding of the packet. In order to avoid packet loss, multiple copies of a single message are generally sent within the network, independently making their way to eventual destination. This design decision poses extra burden over network resources, and unnecessary utilization may result in degrading performance in resource-stringent environments. Hence, there is need to reduce this extra overhead, by determining e ective next-hop utility of nodes, and to better utilize network capacity with real time comprehension of dynamic network characteristic. Heterogeneity of nodes, in terms of capabilities or mobility patterns poses several challenges in de ning a utility function thatts all. Moreover, multi-hop routing protocols generally assume altruistic behavior of nodes. However, this assumption is not always true, as by agreeing to forward messages a node is contributing its resources such as memory, processing power, energy etc. Non-cooperative behavior may reduce e ective node density and can be devastating in opportunistic environments, where intermediary hops are required to share custody of messages. We target these issues in this thesis. In order to addressrst problem, we present a \Multi-Attribute Routing Scheme" (MARS) based on \Simple Multi-Attribute Rating Technique" (SMART) that collects samples of important information about a node''s di erent characteristics. This stochastic picture of a node behavior is then e ectively employed in calculatvii ing its next-hoptness. We also devise a method based on learning rules of neural networks to dynamically determine relative importance of each dimension. Hence, estimations based on an optimized combination of multiple parameters help in taking wiser decisions in relay nodes selection with inherent advantage of e cient utilization of network capacity. In second part of thesis, we analyze the aspect of nodes cooperation in challenged networks. We propose a novel framework to stimulate cooperation among nodes, which is deployed as an overlay to assist Destination-Dependent (DD) utility-based schemes. We envision that such an assistance mechanism to stimulate cooperation among nodes have the potential to help with practical deployments of DD utility schemes in real scenarios a icted with sel sh nodes.
