The dissertation entitled “Role of Opposition against Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and against Ziaul Haq: a comparative study” provides a comprehensive account of the role of two opposition movements; first against Bhutto and the second against Gen. Zia. In Bhutto’s ascendency to power establishment played a mixed role as it had to bring him in power in the wake of military disaster of 1971. But after assuming power he could hardly maneuver between the civil and military leadership to steer the ship of democracy on a sustainable track. Eventually he met a tragic end at the hands of same forces that earlier brought him into power. In the case of Gen. Zia the opposition played a reverse ball game. The role of opposition movement (PNA) against Bhutto, role of various key players, “behind the curtain” forces against the popularly elected government of Bhutto was quite obvious in bringing down the popularly elected government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. On the contrary, the struggle of opposition movement (MRD) against Zia, role of various segments of Pakistani society in the movement for the restoration of democracy and rule of law led to an extent in restoration of democracy in the country. In fact, Bhutto came in power as a result of a popular movement of 1968-69 which mounted against the then President Ayub Khan. This movement, for the first time in the history of Pakistan, challenged the status-quo. After assuming power as a popular leader of the country he introduced egalitarian reforms which further antagonized opposition among the forces of status quo. The study explored that opposition in connivance with other forces overthrew the democratically elected government. Ironically, the then opposition turned a democratic country into dictatorship; an anti-capitalist country turned into a staunch ally of US-led Jihad (war) against USSR in Afghanistan and adopted a pro-US foreign policy. Bhutto, despite being a feudal himself introduced a number of egalitarian reforms and challenged the interests of the elitist classes including civil-military establishment, industrial elite, feudal class and other elitist groups. These groups with their class interest supported to launch a strong movement against Bhutto and consequently succeeded to overthrow him with the help of military junta. In contrast the movement against Zia was launched by people of Pakistan for the establishment of democracy and rule of law in the country. Almost all opposition political parties and progressive segments of Pakistani society played an important role to render great sacrifices in the movement against Zia. The role of political workers, lawyers, students, women and other segments of society has been instrumental against the dictatorial regime of General Zia. Although the movement could neither bring the dictator down nor succeeded to bring back the process of change started by the 1968-69 movement against the strata of ruling elite, nor it could bring back the process of egalitarian reforms initiated by Bhutto regime.

Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase: Function and Responses to Different Stresses in Plants

Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) pathway is the most commonly studied signaling mechanisms, consisting of different groups of protein kinases that participate in regularly connecting interpretation of external stimuli that can change in gene expression or cellular organization within eukaryotic systems. The MAP kinase pathways functions in plants cell signaling (intra- and extra). MAPK cascades follow a response system. MAP kinases are the component of kinase constituents that deliver signals from sensors to responders in eukaryotes including plants. Several pathways are activated under different environmental stresses. Stimulating agents may be biological (biotic) like microbial infections or environmental (abiotic) like temperatures threshold, high salt concentration, drought, heavy metal, Ultra-violet radiation, ozone gases and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The involvement of MAPK signaling pathway in different stresses has been widely studied. In this review we also try to highlight MAPK cascades, its regulation, functions and recent findings in various cellular processes against stress conditions.

The Relationship of Awards of Various Components of Mbbs Final Professional Examination and the Effectiveness of Each in the Evaluation Process

In Pakistan, education is evaluation-driven. Students spend the entire academic session preparing for the summative examinations. Currently these summative examinations for MBBS final year students consist of theory papers. If the summative examination fails to test/ evaluate the students on all the cognitive, psychomotor and affective competencies, this could have serious even fatal consequences for the community as well as the doctors. To identify valid, reliable yet cost-effective and feasible tools of evaluation in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains that will not only lower the economic and psychological burden of evaluation but shall also improve the quality of the product i.e. the Doctors. This was a prospective mixed quantitative and qualitative study of two years duration centered at University of Health Sciences, Lahore (UHS). The student population included final year MBBS students in the academic sessions 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 (Annual 2009 and Annual 2010) in the Medical Colleges of Punjab affiliated with UHS. Stratified random sampling was done to invite two groups of 100 Students each from the population to attend UHS for the Psychomotor and Affective Domains Assessments in this study in 2009 as well as 2010. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 16.0 software. Relevant tests of significance were applied. A p-value of ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Qualitative data was entered into Ethnograph Version 6 and common themes were identified. The study indicates that a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) is an objective instrument of assessment. If constructed properly and with care keeping in mind the competency outcomes associated with assessment, this cost-effective instrument is capable of measuring higher order cognitive skills. A large majority of MCQs constructed at UHS testediii higher cognitive skills than the Structured Answer Questions (SAQs). The Long Essay Question (LEQ) can be specifically targeted for assessment of higher order evaluation and creative cognitive skills. In order to reduce the duration related to assessment through this instrument, it should be used sparsely and only where it cannot be replaced by an MCQ or an SAQ. The currently structured standardized format of clinical, viva voce and Objectively Structured Performance Evaluation (OSPE) for assessment of psychomotor and affective domains in the examinations of UHS has support from all the stakeholders. Especially OSPE, through its wider content coverage and direct observation of clinical skills and attitudes, has been well received. Finally, educational, socioeconomic and geographical background has been seen to affect the scores of students. However, no difference in the perception of students towards the examination, as a whole, or the instruments individually was identified based on the same demographic and educational divisions.
