Because of its ubiquitous and predominantly overt nature, grammarians have never been able to disregard the phenomenon of case. While the traditional grammar coined dozens of names for different forms of case, due to treating case simultaneously along syntactic, semantic and morphological lines, resulting in a confused tangle, the generative enterprise, especially the minimalist program, introduced a certain amount of clarity by separating these notions. However, Pashto grammarians remained oblivious of these phenomenal achievements in the area of case. All that we have are a few traditional accounts of case in Pashto. To fill this gap, this thesis takes the minimalist idea of agreement in terms of features between a functional head and a nominal (Schütze, 1997; Chomsky, 2001) as its starting point. For Pashto language, it is proposed that a) ϕ-features agreement between the functional category T and a nominal results in assigning nominative Case to that nominal, b) ϕ-features agreement between υ or Voice and a nominal results in assigning accusative Case to that nominal, c) ϕ-features agreement between the functional head Appl and a nominal results in assigning dative Case to that nominal, and d) agreement in terms of [N] feature between the functional head D and a possessor results in assigning genitive Case to that nominal. Predominantly, Pashto nominals show nominative-accusative pattern in the present and future tenses, and accusative-nominative (ergative-absolutive) pattern in the past tense. The verb agrees with the subject in the present and future tenses, and with the object in the past tense. This thesis proposes that this has to do with the close relation that exists between the past tense and the passive voice in Pashto, a well-established fact already reported for other Indo-Iranian languages. To deal with this split-ergative nature of Pashto, we xii propose that υ (not maintaining Chomskian distinction between υ* and υ) in Pashto past tense is defective (Chomsky, 2001), lacking [uϕ] features, hence unable to assign accusative Case. Following Collins (2005), we further propose (for Pashto) that [uϕ] in the past tense and the passive are withheld by the functional head Voice to itself. As such, whereas in the present and future tenses, υ is responsible for accusative Case assignment, in Pashto past tense and passive voice constructions, Voice assigns the accusative Case. We studied structural case assignment in various Pashto constructions; such as, monotransitives, ditransitives (datives), ao (and) conjoined subject constructions, unaccusatives, unergatives, copular, passives, determiner phrases, clitics, conjoined constructions, relative clauses, and the constructions where either one or both of the arguments are clauses with the overall conclusion that agreement (in terms of features) between a functional head and a nominal results in assigning structural Case to that nominal. This thesis, being the first of its kind, proposes argument structures/derivations for all of the above mentioned Pashto constructions, thus laying a solid foundation for future research on Pashto clause structure, light verb constructions, the nature of determiner phrases, Pashto verb base form, and the difference in continuous and indefinite aspects.

The role of madaris in spreading Islamic knowledge is an admitted fact. This blessed effort started from Dar-e-Arqam (Makkah) and Suffa (Madinah) as very first Islamic institutions. The role of madaris in producing scholars has been vital. In Islamic world, some universities and madaris got great repute. These institutions have splendid history and valuable tradition of teaching Quran and Sunnah. Along with this, madaris went through reforms time by time. There is a widespread criticism on these institutions. This is a result of sincere concern but most of the times, of mere propaganda and stereotypes. Women madaris certainly are in need of radical reforms to meet the challenges of modernity and globalization. Changing role of women requires a paradigm shift in curricula, teaching methods and training methodology. This article “Balancing one’s rights and responsibilities” is an effort to identify some of the contemporary needs of the Muslim women’s education and curricula. This is the way Muslim women can attain their dynamic role in society by adopting reforms to meet the challenges of the day.

Design of Workflows for Context-Aware Applications

Workflow technology is widely used for automation of business processes that supports their modeling, enactment, tracking, and analysis. Processes represented as workflows are composed of ordered and coordinated activities that integrate humans, resources, and applications. Workflow brings flexibility through explicit definition of processes enabling applications to be easily managed without disturbing the program code. Such unique characteristics of workflow technology enable it to be used in domains other than business also. In fact, workflow based programming brings a paradigm shift in the development of applications in more flexible, natural, and usable way. Recent advancement in communication, electronics, sensors, and software architectures pose requirements of context-aware applications that are dynamic, flexible, and adaptable. These applications are not limited to emerging domains like pervasive and ubiquitous computing but also required by traditional business processes to survive in today’s competitive market. The design and maintenance of context-aware applications may greatly be simplified by using workflows to represent variability associated with these applications. However, rigidity in workflow representation and enactment necessitates modifications and extensions in workflow technology before it could be adopted in context-aware application development. This thesis investigates key issues and challenges in adopting workflow technology for context-aware applications. Governed by the guiding principles of flexibility, adaptability, extensibility, reusability, autonomy, and usability; a generic framework for context-aware workflow design and management is presented. Making use of explicit modeling of context information, adaptation rule-set, and sub-workflows, a conventional workflow application may be transformed to become context-aware. A Context-Activity Architecture is presented that describes the integration and working of constituent components of context-aware workflow system. Most notably, an activity is represented as specially designed context-aware activity that adapts itself to a contextually suitable activity at runtime with the help of necessary functionality embedded within the activity itself. The proposed architecture is realized through the development of a context aware workflow designer tool (CAWD) using Windows Workflow Foundation classes. A couple of example scenarios and simulated testing elaborate and verify the intended adaptation operations and handling of evolutionary changes within a process that may be experienced by a context-aware workflow application.
