This thesis explores the relationship among democracy, poverty, and violence using spatial econometric technique; socio-economic and demographic determinants of party affiliation; and impact of socio-economic deprivations on voters’ preferences Pakistan. It comprises of five chapters which deal with political economy of terrorist attacks, party support, and election outcomes. The brief introduction of the thesis is given in chapter one and rest of the study proceeds as follows. Chapter 2 investigates the determinants of spatial variation in terrorist attacks in Pakistan for the years 2009 and 2011. Using the spatial lag and spatial error models, the chapter concludes that poverty within a district is negatively related to terrorism in the district. However, poverty in neighboring districts is associated with high number of attacks in that district. Votes’ turnout as proxy for general public’s contentment with regime is negatively correlated to terrorism incidents. The results also reveal that the clusters of attacks have also spread to other parts of the country between the years 2009 and 2011. It is found that terrorism also spreads through the diffusion of attacks to other districts and provinces. More importantly, the attacks are spatially correlated and hence the hot spots are identifiable. Hence, the terrorist attacks are not random across districts, although they may be random within a particular district. The 3rd chapter explores the basis on which voters affiliate themselves with political parties in Pakistan. The study is based on primary data consisting of a sample of 929 students enrolled in Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. It uses multinomial logistic regression model to find different socio-economic and demographic correlates of intended party support. The empirical results show that gender, region, perceived government performance, and media exposure play important roles in the formation of political preferences towards a specific political party. Moreover, different political parties enjoy certain advantages over the competing parties such as concentrated vote bank in specific regions on the basis of ethnicity and media coverage. Furthermore, the study also finds that PML(N) has certain advantages in media handling and projection of its performance because of its vast experience in previous governments. On the other hand, PTI has advantage in some demographic aspects and it is a preferred choice of educated, young, urban and female voters. The fourth chapter contributes to existing literature by empirically investigating the impact of environment, terrorist attacks, and socio-economic deprivations on changes in vote shares of the major contesting political parties between two consecutive elections in Pakistan. For estimations the study uses district level data and fixed effects technique on pooled data for the election years 2008 and 2013. Results of the study show that environmental degradation reflected in rise of temperature and terrorist attacks that represent deterioration of security of life and property have significant and adverse affected the voters’ preferences for the incumbent regimes. Similarly, economic deprivation, lack of educational opportunities, and health facilities have also played significant role in reducing the vote shares of the incumbent parties. The results of our all studies are mostly according to the theoretical expectations and also having important policy implications. The first essay highlights the significance of political discourse besides military cum administrative measures while combating the menus of terrorism in Pakistan. Whereas the second explores socio-economic and demographic determinants of party affiliation; and impact of socio-economic deprivations on voters’ preferences is studied in the third and last essay.

Update on Pakistan Polio Eradication Initiative

The global polio eradication initiative (GPEI) was established in 1988 as a result of the declaration of commitment by the World Health Assembly. In Pakistan, National Emergency Action Plan [NEAP] coined the strategies under government directives to play a pivotal role in line with international requirements to make poliomyelitis extinct. At the program’s initiation, there were around 350,000 cases of polio reported annually. The incidence has fallen by 99% due to the immunization of more than 2.5 billion children worldwide. Poliovirus has three serotypes; two have already been eradicated (the last case of poliovirus type 2 was reported in 1999 and of poliovirus type 3 in 2012). Poliovirus transmission has ceased with the exception of Pakistan and Afghanistan. In April 2022, two cases of acute flaccid paralysis due to poliovirus type 1 have been reported in KPK province. In this communication, insight is provided regarding the issues that have contributed to this wild poliovirus resurgence after a 15-month gap and the way forward.

Information Seeking Behaviour Isb of Teaching Faculty Tf and Master Previous/Final Year Students Mpfys Using Central Library, University of Peshawar

The underlying research study explores effectiveness of the resources for the users in the Central Library, UoP under topic ‘‘Information Seeking Behaviour (ISB) of Teaching Faculty (TF) and Master (Previous/Final Year Students) (MPFYS) Using Central Library, University of Peshawar.’’ The main objectives of this inquiry were to investigate information resources used by the TF & MPFYS of the UoP in the Central Library and to analyze the extent to which the existing information resources met their needs. It was presumed that the TF & MPFYS were dependent on and faced some problems in using resources in the Central Library. The current investigation is based on a population of 5474 from all the six faculties under stratified random sampling of 890 TF & MPFYS. A sequential and quantitative method approach was adopted to collect the research data through questionnaire as in the earlier similar studies most frequently used methodologies were questionnaires and interviews based surveys. An extensive amount of literature available on information needs and information seeking behaviour of the users was reviewed. The past readings also showed that the determined investigation would influence on the information style of the TF & MPFYS. However, literature relevant to the staff and students using Central Library of the University of Peshawar was not available. Information needs and its seeking behaviour had effects in one way or the other on the learning process that the TF & MPFYS used. All the participants of the study were overall dependent on resources of the Central Library of University of Peshawar. These resources were important, satisfactory and preferable to some extent for the respondents. The printed materials and e-resources available in mother or in non-mother languages in the Central Library appealed to a maximum number of users to accomplish their desired pursuits. The respondents were highly satisfied with the subject books, e-resources, reference books and newspapers. They visited the library as frequently as they felt the need of information. They stayed 2-3 hours per week in the library for using the resources in a peaceful environment. Although the findings indicated that the respondents faced several problems, causing anxiety while using resources in the Central Library, yet they could find 50% of their desired information. The respondents had ‘good’ skills to seek help of the library staff in search of information resources in the Central Library, UoP. They could not be satisfied fully with the staff’s help. It was suggested that the Central Library, University of Peshawar should have designed information system, like orientation programme measures, enrolling high qualified and experienced staff to balance development of collection, manage system for human resources development, addition of computers in the laboratory, provision of secondary services and to arrange alternate power supply. This study may well be repeated after every ten years. No such study like the present one in the University of Peshawar has been conducted so far. This study will, therefore, be of great importance for this university, may for any university in the country.
