High global consumption of medicinal plants coupled with their demand in markets and lack of resources lead to the threatening issue of adulteration. Correct identification of pure and genuine medicinal material is prerequisite for safety and efficacy of plant based medicines. The present research project is based on taxonomic, pharmacognostic, physicochemical and chemical analysis of eight cases of traded medicinal plants presented in tables, figures, chemical profile and pictorial guide of original source like Berberis aristata, Colchicum luteum, Alcea rosea, Sisymbrium irio, Argyrolobium roseum, Centipeda minima, Eruca sativa and Eucalyptus camaldulensis with their adulterants. These taxonomic problematic medicinal plants are authenticated by detailed study of characters like morphology and organolepty, shape of epidermal cells and their margins, stomatal type, trichome type, pollen shape and exine sculpture pattern, solubility, fluorescence behavior under visible and ultra violet (UV) light, differentiation in physicochemical analysis, total phenol and total flavonoid content (TPC and TFC), quercetin level under High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), percentage scavenging activity and antioxidant potential. The findings of the present research project authenticate genuine source of medicinal importance like Zereshk (Berberis aristata from its adulterants Berberis lyceum and Vitis Jacquemontii); Surunjaan talkh (Colchicum luteum from its adulterant Narcissus tazetta); Gul-e-kheira (Alcea rosea from its adulterant Hibiscus syriacus); Khoob kalan (Sisymbrium irio from its adulterant Coronopus didymus); Makhni booti (Argyrolobium roseum from its adulterant Viola stocksii); Nakchikni (Centipeda minima from its adulterant Wattakaka volubilis); Tara Mira (Eruca sativa from its adulterant Naturtium officinale) and Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis from its adulterant Populus ciliata and Salix alba). Outcomes of this research are helpful in maintaining quality, safety and efficacy of traded medicinal plants. In addition, authentication of genuine medicinal source may lead to extraction of required chemical constituents that may assist in future studies to develop natural herbal drugs at global perspectives.

پانی کی اہمیت و افادیت

تعارف(Introduction)

“Water, a substance composed of the chemical elements hydrogen and oxygen and existing in gaseous, liquid, and solid states. Water is one of the most plentiful and essential of compounds .”[3]

انسائیکلوپیڈیا آف ریلیجن کا مقا لہ نگار لکھتا ہے:

“Water is essential for man’s life ;it ensures his nourishment by fertilizing the land. It is more than nourishment ,since it is the source of nourishment.”[4]

Epidemiology of Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Response to Different Hazardous Chewing Causes in Lahore, Pakistan-a Unicenter study epidemiology of oral carcinoma in Lahore, Pakistan

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)being the world’s most prevailing and frightening cancerous disorder lacks the sufficient data in Pakistan despite of its higher magnitude and prevalence. Objective: This study was specifically designed and conducted with the aim to identify the frequency of this disorder along with causative factors in past three years in a tertiary care hospital of Lahore, Pakistan. Methods: Epidemiological study was conducted using retrospective randomized method and all pre-requisites were filled. The clinical profiles of patients were collected from Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery Departmentof Pathology, Mayo Hospital Lahore. Patients who had undergone treatment for OSCC were contacted and interviewed for information about demographic regions, previous history of malignancy, disease onset, chewing habits, exposure to pesticides, industrial exposure to metals etc. And all particulars were not and compiled on questionnaire. Results: A total of 54 patients from different districts of Punjab participated in the study. Percentages for each possible causative chewing habit were calculated and 87.50 % of population was found addicted to different habits. Genetic factor might have contributed in remaining for development of OSCC. Conclusions: Informative data provided in this study will be helpful to be used by the government and private health agencies while designing and planning management of oral health problems and allocating health budgets in focusing this issue

Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Self Esteem Among Sighted and Visually Impaired School Students

Present study was designed to find out the relationship between emotional intelligence and self esteem among sighted and visually impaired school students. The main objectives of this study were to measure self esteem of sighted and visually impaired students, to measure emotional intelligence level of sighted and visually impaired students, to compare self esteem and emotional intelligence of sighted and visually impaired students, to compare emotional intelligence and self esteem of sighted and visually impaired students studying in private and public sectors institutions and to investigate the role of students' demographic variations of gender, age, grade, family socioeconomic status, number of siblings, birth order, parental professions and qualification in determining their self esteem and emotional intelligence levels. In this study standardized questionnaires were used to measure emotional intelligence and self esteem, emotional intelligence was measured by using Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) and Self Esteem Questionnaire (SEQ) was used to measure students' self esteem. EIS contained 33 items comprised seven subscales i.e. Appraisal of Emotions in Self, Appraisal of Emotions in Others, Emotional Expression, Emotional Regulation of others, Utilization of Emotions in Problem Solving and Uncategorized. SEQ contained 36 items comprised five subscales i.e. self — Regard, Social Confidence, School Abilities, Physical Appearance and Physical Abilities. Cronbach's Alpha reliability of EIS and SEQ were .843 and .696. A sample comprising of 200 students was taken from sighted and visually impaired students studying at secondary schools from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Sargodha District and Attock. Stratified random sampling technique was used to collect data for the study. Research findings revealed that there is significant difference in responses between sighted and visually impaired school students regarding emotional intelligence and self esteem, this study also reveals that there is significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence and self esteem.
