The increasing demand for nutraceuticals indicates that consumers are more concerned about a particular diet associated with good health and lower risk for certain ailments. Mushrooms can be used as functional food and as a source of nutraceuticals. The present study on the nutritional and biochemical characterization of wild and commercial mushrooms collected from Pakistan. Wild Ganoderma lucidum was collected from Jinnah gardenFaisalabad, while two commercial locally cultivated mushrooms Pleurotus ostreatus and Volvariela volvacea and two commercially available exotic mushrooms Lentinus edodes and Hericium erinaceus were collected from local market. Proximate analysis of the selected mushrooms showed that protein, carbohydrate and fiber contents were present in significant amounts whereas the values were low for fats and energy. Crude protein contents were higher in V. volvacea and fiber contents were much higher in G. lucidum. Bioaccumulation capabilities studies of mushrooms revealed that the selected mushrooms are good bioaccumulators of macro and micronutrients; making them good source of essential and non-essential minerals. Phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and Iron were prevalent in V. volvacea whereas calcium and sodium were significantly higher in P. ostreatus. Wild G. lucidum contained more potassium and low sodium. Amino acid profile showed eight essential and nine non-essential amino acids were present in all the selected mushrooms. Glutamine, aspratate, arginine and tyrosine were found in significant amount in P. ostreatus whereas V. volvacea contained proline, cystine and alanine in high concentration. For the assessment of antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic (brine shrimp) studies the mushrooms were extracted in ethanol and further fractionated in different solvents with ascending polarity (n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and water). The water fractions exhibited good antioxidant and antimicrobial potential. V. volvacea and H. erinaceus had high phenolic contents while flavonoid contents were observed higher in P. ostreatus. Selected mushrooms were found nontoxic against Brine shrimps nauplii (Artemiasalina). Mushrooms extracts and fractions showed activity indicative of thrombolytic and anticancer properties, which were directly proportional to concentration, time of incubation and amount of extract. Mushrooms showed inhibition against tyrosinase and α-glucosidase enzymes. P. ostreatus was the best tyrosinase inhibitor with least IC50 value among the selected commercial mushrooms whereas α-glucosidase activity was very high in G. lucidum. Phyto-constituents (phenolic acids, tocopherol and lutein) were also identified and quantified by HPLC. Gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, p.cumaric acid, caffeic acid and ferulic acids were more frequent in H. erinaceus and V. volvacea. Fatty acids profile by GC/MS recorded that unsaturated fatty acids were more prevalent over the saturated fatty acids except G. lucidum, which contained more saturated fatty acids. Monosaccharide linkage analysis showed that glucose is the main sugar, while small amounts of D-galactose and D-mannose were also present. Methylation analysis revealed the presence of (1,3;1,4)-β-glucan as major components and xyloglucan and glucosamannan as minor components. The results from our studies confirm similar reports by others as well as showed indicator compounds that could have been responsible for their activity against infectious diseases caused by microbes, acclaimed traditional system of medicine. Further studies to substantiate our findings and their development into healthy nutritious food are recommended.

موقف إلحاق الورق النقدي بالفلوس: دراسة فقهية نقدية

Paper currency has remained controversial since its advent, until the majority of the modern scholars agreed that paper currency is just like gold and silver, and all the rules and provisions regarding the/of homogeneous and heterogeneous exchange of gold and silver are applicable to paper currency. This viewpoint is widely adopted by prominent modern-day international academies of Islamic Jurisprudence and the same has been preferred by the majority of contemporary scholars in their books, dissertations and scholarly articles. On the contrary, there is a different opinion of majority of the scholars in Indian sub-continent. The reason behind this was that the viewpoint of Ḥanafi school of thought about legal effective cause (᾽illat) of Ribā i.e. Weight is not found in paper currency, so the rules of Ṣarf (Exchange of gold and silver) are inapplicable. So, they opined that paper currency is like Fulūs (metal coins). Furthermore, to stop all the possible ways resulting to/in Ribā according to this opinion, they preferred the viewpoint of Imam Muhammad (R.A) regarding the metal coins and set some precautionary measures. However, the said standpoint has not been deliberated and contested in the contemporary jurisprudential research work as it deserved. This research aims to evaluate this viewpoint in detail, clarifying its roots and evidences while revealing its implications and comparing it with the view adopted by the majority of the contemporary scholars.

The Tension Between Muslim Law and Social Realities: A Case of Abortion in Pakistan

This study investigates the issue of abortion in Pakistan from the perspectives of women who go through abortion. In doing so, it discusses whether there is a dilemma between the ethics of abortion based on contextual realities, and the Shari‘a law based on the discourses of the Qur’an and the Hadith and their interpretations and applications in the fiqh. The objectives of the research are to investigate how Muslims take decisions about abortion, and who takes them. The empirical research was conducted in Karachi. Using a case study approach, the data was collected through semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. Three groups of people were interviewed: women who had experienced abortion, doctors, and religious scholars to seek different perspectives. The women were from different ethnic and socio-cultural backgrounds. The findings reveal that women are often not the sole decision makers. With some exceptions, most decisions are taken by husbands. The decision making becomes difficult where husbands do not cooperate and even threaten to use the law against their wives, which gives severe punishments, except when abortions are performed for health reasons and for necessary treatment. The abortion law in Pakistan, derived from Muslim fiqh, has a narrow scope and there exists a tension between the law and social realities. Thus women suffer the most and risk their lives due to restrictive laws and unqualified abortion service providers. Most abortions take place due to poverty and for economic reasons for which people take pragmatic approaches. They rarely consult religious clergy in taking the decisions but most women felt that abortion was a sin. Yet they asserted that they abort out of necessity. Abortion is also used as a means of family planning. It is concluded that judgments about abortions are made based on ethical reasoning under compelling socio-economic realities rather than on beliefs and law, although there remains a tension between the two. Abortion law in Pakistan should provide for equal and mutual consent of husband and wife and broaden its scope as provided in Muslim law. But there is also a need to generate ethical discourses to draw broad principles rather than rules to solve contemporary issues of abortion.
