Soil salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses affecting growth and productivity of important crops worldwide. Sugarcane is a glycophyte crop of major economical value in tropical and subtropical countries of the world where salinity is an ever-increasing problem. Sugarcane plants grown under stressed conditions show not only arrested growth of various parts but also a decrease in sucrose content. During the recent years, tissue culture technique has gained importance in producing plants with improved salt tolerance through selection of salt-tolerant cells lines and their subsequent regeneration. During the present work, protocols were established for callus induction, maintenance and regeneration of the two sugarcane cultivars (cv. SPF 234 and cv. HSF 240). It was observed that the best medium for callus induction and maintenance was MS medium supplemented with 13.5 μM 2,4-D. Callus cultures at day 120 were shifted to the various regeneration media. It was observed that among the different media used, MS medium supplemented with 8.87 μM BAP and 0.5 μM TDZ was the best in terms of all the growth parameters studied for both the cultivars. However, the maximum regeneration frequency in cv. SPF 234 was greater (85 %) as compared to cv. HSF 240 (76 %). Best rooting (95 %) of the regenerated shoots in cv. SPF 234 was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 2 μM IBA at day 30. Almost similar results were recorded for in vitro-grown plants of cv. HSF 240 for percentage root formation on MS medium supplemented with 1 or 2 μM IBA with 94 and 93 % rooting respectively. Hardening of sugarcane plants was also successfully accomplished for both the sugarcane cultivars.

Power Generation of Pure Sine Wave in Batteryless Solar System using Advanced Control

A novel technique for conversion of DC power to AC power is introduced using solar powered sine wave generation system is presented. DC power extracted from solar system is made utilitarian for driving the BLDC (brushless DC) motor with constant speed constraints. The back EMF signals of each phase of the BLDC motor facilitated the development of technique for the sine wave generation from solar system without battery backup. This motor is coupled with AC generator, which yields the AC power on demand. The constant speed constraint indispensable for fixed electrical frequency at the output of generator. A new control technique is rendered for reference tracking speed control of BLDC motor using Lyapunov theory by changing switching frequency, and also maintaining the voltage level at the output of converter driving BLDC by regulating the switching frequency of the zeta converter. The proposed methodology for generation of AC power from solar power system is also tested on prototype. The comparison of conventional technique for generation of sine wave power and proposed scheme is mentioned at later section of this paper for describing the efficacy of newly presented scheme.

Cyclic Voltammetric Study of Some Biologically Active Drugs

This electrochemical study of three different biologically active compounds has been conducted using cyclic voltammetry technique at gold electrode. Losartan Potassium is an antihypertensive drug, while Gemifloxacin is antibacterial and Clarithromycin is primarily bacteriostatic and also has antimicrobial effect. Cyclic voltammetric study has been conducted by using (0.04M) Britton Robinson Buffer as supporting electrolyte with different pH range. For Losartan Potassium pH range of B-R buffer was 8-11 while for Clarithromycin and Gemifloxacin B-R buffer pH range (2-6) has been selected according to the appropriate solubility of these pharmaceutical compounds. Voltammograms of all three biologically active compounds have been recorded at six different scan rates of 20, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500mV/s. Different electrochemical parameters such as peak potential (Ep), peak current (Ip), transfer coefficient (α), number of electron (nα), diffusion coefficient (D), and heterogeneous rate constant (K0) were determined. Moreover, diagnostics tests have also been applied to define the electrochemical properties of these compounds. Results indicate that Losartan Potassium follows electrochemically irreversible reduction process with transfer of two electrons involving adsorption controlled process on gold electrode. However, electrochemical behavior of Gemifloxacin showed quasi reversible redox process with two electron transfer and on the electrode surface some adsorption complications have been observed. In case of Clarithromycin irreversible oxidation process with two electron transfer has been identified and electrode processes were shown to be diffusion controlled. These quantitative and qualitative investigations based on cyclic voltammetry technique demonstrate that this method is very reliable, sensitive and appropriate for the determination of electrochemical properties of different biological and pharmaceutical compounds using gold electrode. Moreover, this technique can also be used for quality control and pharmacokinetics studies of biologically active compounds.
