Aphid parasitoids are important bio-control agents, being used in aphid pest management in the field as well as in greenhouses worldwide. Over 400 species of parasitoids are described worldwide and most of them are being used as a basis of integrated pest management (IPM). In Pakistan, only 30 species of aphid parasitoids were reported; out of those 11 species were recorded from Potohar region of Punjab Province of Pakistan. Keeping in view this low level of basic research on these important insects, mummified aphids, adult parasitoids and hyperparasitoids were collected from various localities of Punjab during 2005-08. A total of 10827 parasitoid individuals were collected consisting of 30 species in 8 genera belonging to subfamily Aphidiinae along with 58 new trophic associations and 184 new locality records. Nine species namely: Aphidius gifuensis, Aphidius hortensis, Aphidius hieraciorum, Aphidius phalangomyzi, Aphidius salicis, Aphidius sonchi, Binodoxys basicurvus, Binodoxys rubicula and Binodoxys angelicae are recorded for the first time from Pakistan. A species, Trioxys aridunivercena sp. nov. is described as a new to science record. In addition, a total of 1257 hyperparasitoid individuals were collected consisting of 6 species in 6 genera from 3 subfamilies along with 19 new trophic associations and 51 new locality records. One species, namely Alloxysta carinata is a new record for Pakistan. Host plants and primary parasites of A. carinata are new scientific records. Two species, Phaenoglyphis punjabensis sp. nov. and Dendrocerus rawalena sp. nov. are new scientific records. Identification keys for all recorded species have been prepared. Species are illustrated by their valid names, synonyms, measurement of various body parts, xviitritrophic association, comparison of characters from published descriptions for new records to country and comprehensive characters description for new science specimens has also been provided. The known distribution of all the species is also updated. A map is provided for the distribution of each of them. Biology of most common and voracious parasitoids is given. As Diaeretiella rapae is the most common parasitoid so its general biology including study of various life stages along with some biological parameters like copulation time, pre-mating time, oviposition time and adult longevity have been given. Biological parameters like mummy colouration, position and shape of emergence hole of parasitoids and hyperparasitoids have been given for two aphid species namely, Aphis gossypii and Aphis fabae. Sex ratio of field collected populations of the parasitoid species like Diaeretiella rapae, Aphidius transcaspicus, Aphidius uzbikistanicus, Aphidius avenae, Aphidius smithi and Binodoxys anglicae emerged from the mummies of various species of aphids have been determined and was found female biased. Sex ratio of all recorded parasitoids and hyperparasitoids species are calculated and found to be female biased. A list of trophic associations of host plants, aphids, parasitoids and hyperparasitiods has been provided. Presence and absence of various aphid parasitoids and hyperparasitoids in various localities of Punjab is also tabulated for future reference.

Muslim Religious Militancy: Causes and Cure

Islamic religious militancy is a matter of great concern for the Muslim and the non-Muslim world today. The analysis of the ideology of the militants reveals that they find the legitimacy of their military activities in the ideal of the establishment of an Islamic state to establish the universal rule of Islām, and in the specific interpretations of some Qur’ānic verses, Aḥādīth of the Prophet (r), and also from the establishment of the Islamic state in Madīnah by the Prophet (r), his the military expeditions and those of his companions against their opponents and from the treatment of our historians of the individual military campaigns against the Muslim regimes of their times. The Muslim militants also fight against their Muslim governments on the grounds that they are not the true Islamic governments. The militants do not bother to kill the common Muslim masses, who vote and support such rulers. They take it as collateral damage. The world naturally reacts to this cult, especially the west, being at the helm of the world politics. Not only do the West tries to crush the Islamic militants, across the world, but also, topple the Muslim democratic governments having any ideal of an Islamic Khilāfah. This frustrates the peaceful political activists and strengthens the military activists, further. To end this ongoing and mounting cult of religious militancy, it is necessary to review the specific and traditional interpretations of the academic sources of Islām: Qur’ān, Ḥadīth and Fiqh, regarding the legitimacy of militancy in Islām. Secondly, to remove their misconceptions, it is necessary to engage the militants in dialogue through a counter narrative, which the author tried to present here.

Enhancing Accuracy of Urdu Sentiments Analysis, Using Lexicon-Based Approach

In this research the accuracy of Urdu Sentiment Analysis in multiple domains is enhanced by using the Lexicon-based approach. In the lexicon, apart from the traditional approach that considers adjectives only, nouns and verbs are also included. An efficient Urdu Sentiment Analyzer is developed that applies rules and makes use of this new lexicon to perform Urdu Sentiment Analysis by classifying sentences as positive, negative or neutral. Negations, intensifiers and context-depentent words are effectively handled for enhancing accuracy of Urdu Sentiment Analyzer. Specific rules for handling negations, intensifiers and context-dependent words are incorporated in Urdu Sentiment Analyzer. For testing the Lexicon-based approach, a corpus of 6025 sentences from 151 blogs belonging to 14 different genres is collected and the sentences are annotated by three human annotators to classify each sentence as positive, negative and neutral. Evaluating this Urdu Sentiment Analyzer, by using sentences from the corpus, yields the most promising results so far in Urdu language (up to the knowledge of the author) with 89.03% accuracy, 0.86 precision, 0.90 recall and 0.88 f-measure. The comparison with the previous works in Urdu Sentiment Analysis shows that the combination of this Urdu Sentiment Lexicon and Urdu Sentiment Analyzer is much more effective than the previous such combinations. The main reason for increased efficiency is the development of wide coverage lexicon and effective handling of negations, intensifiers and context-dependent words by the Urdu Sentiment Analyzer. Although high accuracy is achieved by Lexicon-based approach in multiple domains for Urdu Sentiment Analysis, which is the main objective of this research, but for comparison, Supervised Machine Learning approach is also used. Three well known classifiers that are Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree and K Nearest Neighbor are tested; their outputs are compared and their results are ultimately improved in several iterations. It is further concluded that K Nearest Neighbor is performing better than Support Vector Machine and Decision Tree. For verification of this result, three evaluation measures i.e. McNemar’s Test, Kappa Statistic and Root Mean Squared Error are used. The result from all these three evaluation measures confirmed that K Nearest Neighbor is performing much better than the other two classifiers and achieved 67.02% accuracy, 0.68, 0.67 and 0.67 precision, recall and f-measure respectively. The results from both the approaches are compared. On the basis of experiments performed in this research, it is concluded that the Lexicon-based approach outperforms Supervised Machine Learning approach, when Urdu Sentiment Analysis is performed in multiple domains in terms of accuracy, precision, recall and f-measure, economy of time and effort.
