Weeds are the serious problem in our agriculture system. Therefore we need to know weeds and its relation to crops. Present study was conducted to describe the allelopathic effect of the three common weeds of Sindh Chenopodium album, Chenopodium murale and Anagallis arvensis on six tests crops viz., wheat, cowpea, chick pea, mung, pearl millet and maize. The experiments were carried out in laboratory and green house. The influences of weed on test species are evaluated by two separate laboratory experiments. In first trial study the comparison of osmotic stress by mannitol solution and allelopathic effect of weed extract with varied concentration (1, 3, and 5%) compared with different osmotic potentials (22, 32.9, 43.9 and 66kPa) of mannitol solutions, to explore the role of osmotic potential. The second experiment was conducted to study the allelopathic effect by shoot and root leachate of weed species on different parameters of test species. In the green house experiments monoculture (only test species and only weed species) and combine culture (Weed and test species) pot trial carried out. Allelopathic effects of weed from first experiments to last on these growth parameters i.e. percent germination, speed of germination, radicle length, plant height and fresh/dry weight of root and shoot of test species, the results obtained are summarized as under. 1. Comparison between osmotic potential and weed extract trial show that germination was not considerably effected by osmotic potential while in extract (1, 3, and 5%) Chenopodium album and Chenopodium murale highly reduced than the Anagallis arvensis. Chenopodium album (5%) extract reduced the percent germination (18% in cowpea, 30% in pearl millet) like Chenopodium murale 5% extract showed the similar trend (reduction, 22% in wheat, 50% in gram). 2. Low osmotic potential have no considerable effect on radicle growth of all test species as compared to extract trial. Radicle length significantly effected in comparative trial show the same trend in high osmotic potential 66 kPa = 5% extract of weeds. Five percent extract of Chenopodium album and mannitol solution (66 kPa) were significantly reduced the radicle length as 8.21 to 0.79cm in wheat and 7.84 to 1.57cm in gram. Same concentration (5%) of Chenopodium murale, Anagallis arvensis and mannitol solution were also significantly reduced the radicle length as 8 to 4cm in wheat, 8 to 1 cm in gram and 9 to 1 cm in pearl millet while in other weed as 10 to 3 cm in cow pea, 9 to 3 cm in pearl millet. On the basis of these results it is concluded that weed extract had pronounced and dominating effects on test crops by allelopathy which osmotic pressure also play a minor role 3. Root and shoot leachate of the weeds were considerably affected germination and speed of germination of test species. Radicle growth in some test species significantly affected by root leachate and shoot leachate. However leachate of Chenopodium album and Anagallis arvensis have no significant effect on radicle elongation of some test species i.e. gram, maize and pearl millet. Generally these results revealed that the root leachate highly effected the growth of test species than the shoot leachate. 4. In mono and combine culture study the morphological characters i.e. plant height, fresh and dry weight statistically assessed. The weed species also considerably effected seed germination of all test species in combine culture trials. Gram seed germination highly effected to all test species in Chenopodium murale (38%), similarly Chenopodium album also effected gram seed germination (72%) and Anagallis arvensis effected (70%) in gram and wheat while the remaining test species were also considerably affected. Further more in combine culture trial Chenopodium album reduced the plant height of gram (17.49cm), wheat (12cm) and pearl millet (17cm) significantly. Chenopodium murale and Anagallis arvensis also significantly effected on wheat (18, 12 cm), gram (8, 17cm) and mung (8, 14cm) while the remaining test species also significantly reduced the plant height. Shoot and root weight of test plant were found to be higher in weed free (control) trial. Dry weight of shoot and root of test species in combine culture growth were significantly reduced. Results showed that reduction in germination, plant height and dry matter were affected due to the allelopathic effect of weed species. Above investigations show that in general these weeds have allelopathic effects on test crops, in there initial stage of growth (germination and radicle elongation). Therefore precautionary action should be taken to remove these weeds from the field to increase crop production.

Human beings are the masterpieces of the Creator of the universe and He enjoined them to preserve human life. One form of the preservation of life is the utmost care for the rights of even an embryo. The study of the rights of the embryo laid down in the primary scriptures of Islam suggests that the embryo is accorded respect like living people. The rights of children start well before their birth. At present, cases ofabortion are reported daily. Muslim jurists have dwelled on ordinances about abortion for the benefit of people. At present,  medical science has revealed all the stages of childbirth from conception to delivery. The effects of abortion, both positive and negative, are not hard to grasp in the light of modern scientific research Not to talk of living people, Islam guarantees the life of the early developmental stage of a baby within the uterus of the mother. This extraordinary care for a child during its embryonic period demonstrates that Islam attaches high priority to human life even before its start on the face of the Earth. Should one abort without a legitimate cause, the legal experts from the main schools of Islamic jurisprudence hold that the perpetrator will pay a fine and make compensation. If, on the other hand, a fetus is removed from the womb to end a pregnancy as it may harm a woman physically, it is allowable;  only a healthy mother may give birth to healthy babies. In a like manner, when a couple feels unable to train and educate somany kids, they may have an operation to end a pregnancy by removing an embryo. However, while resorting to abortion,  parents must not lose sight of the do’s and don’ts of abortion jurists have laid down and not just fall victim to the catchy slogan of “family planning”.

Population, Distribution and Food Habits of Indian Pangolin Manis Crassicaudata in Potohar Plateau

Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata), the only pangolin species that occurs in Pakistan, is categorized more recently as “ Endangered” under IUCN Red List criterion and it faces a high risk of extinction in the wild. Ecological data on this species is very scanty in the country, where illegal hunting and killing for obtaining its body scales for trade purpose is the biggest threat to its population. The current study, therefore, investigated the distribution, vegetation analysis of the habitat, current population status, and the diet of Indian pangolin in the Potohar Plateau. Distribution of Indian pangolin was studied by conducting extensive surveys in the study area, in addition to carrying out questionnaire surveys (Interviews by local people). Results showed that Indian pangolin was distributed in all transects taken in district Chakwal and Jhelum while it was found present in some transects but absent in others, in the rest of the two districts (Attock and Rawalpindi) of the Potohar Plateau. Vegetation analysis of the habitat of Indian pangolin was carried out by quantifying trees (by Point-Centered-Quarter method), shrubs and herbs species (by Quadrat method) of the study area. For shrub species, quadrats of 4m x 4m, while for herb species quadrats of 1m x 1m were established at selected sampling sites for data collection. Dominant tree species included Acacia nilotica (IVI=74.9) Zizyphus mauritiana (IVI=61.75), and Acacia modesta (IVI=58.6), dominant shrub species were Zizyphus nummularia ( IVI=199.16), followed by Calotropis procera (IVI= 65.08), Prosopis juliflora (IVI= 35.40), and Lantana camara (IVI= 30.13) xx while the major herb species recorded were Cynodon dactylon (IVI = 40), followed by Cenchrus ciliaris (IVI= 37.56) and Cyprus rotundus (IVI= 31.06). Population density of Indian pangolin in the study area was estimated by using indirect method of its active permanent burrow counts at thirty different selected sampling sites including all four districts of the Plateau. Population estimates of the species showed overall a declining trend in the Potohar plateau; an average population density of 1.08 /km² was recorded during the year 2010 and 0.36 /km² in 2011 and 0.23/km² in 2012, with an overall decline by 79%, with an average decline of 52 % per annum. The population density of the species was found significantly different (p < 0.05) within the study years (2010 - 2013). A total of N=10 specimens of Indian pangolin were recovered from the field from different sampling sites, in addition to two skeletons, for their morphometrical analysis. Average body weight and body length of the specimens were 9 ± 2.2 kg and 99.25 ± 10.5 cm, respectively. Relative tongue weight (RTW) and relative tongue length (RTL) constituted 0.2 % and 37 %, of the body, respectively. Average numbers of scales on the body of juvenile, sub-adult, and adult specimens were 286, 276, and 424, respectively. Food habits of Indian pangolin were investigated by fecal analysis, a total of N = 44 fecal pellet samples were collected from different sampling sites of the study area. Fecal analysis revealed main food components recovered from samples as ants body parts (including heads, and abdominal parts) approximately 41.5%, and soil particles or clay approximately 58%, with minor percentages of bugs, termites body parts, grass and wood. The soil particles or clay contributed the highest % weight (57.95%) of the fecal pellet followed by ants (37%), wood xxi (2.3%), grass (0.89%), termites (0.95%) and least for bugs (0.375%). The main prey species of Indian pangolin identified from the faecal analysis and from the field collections included two species of black ants (Camponotus confuci and Camponotus compressus) and one species of termite (Odontotermes obesus). The biggest threat to the population of Indian pangolin in the study area is its illegal capturing and killing for obtaining its body scales for trade purpose, which are used in making Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM). A sharp decline of approximately 79% in the population of Indian pangolin during three years of the study period demands urgent conservation measures to be launched to save its little remaining population.
