Most of the farmers of irrigated areas cultivate their fields with traditional tillage practices which increase the cost of production as well as delaying sowing which has adverse effects on crop growth and yield. In addition towards tillage, straw managing is a key factor for better crop growth and yield. Two field trials were conducted to estimate the “Crop residual management techniques with different tillage practices in a rice-wheat cropping system” at the Post Graduate Agricultural Research Station (PARS), University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during 2007-08 and 2008-09. Both the experiments were laid out on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with split plot arrangement using four replications, in a net plot size of 10 m x 20 m. In the first experiment three tillage systems (conventional tillage, minimum tillage and zero tillage) were used in sub plots and straw management (removal of rice straw and burning of rice straw) in main plot was applied. Tillage systems significantly influenced soil physical properties, growth and yield characteristics as well as wheat yield. Reducing tillage improved soil structure and increased soil bulk density which led to higher crop yield. Happy seeder plots produced higher yield and yield components in comparison with other tillage systems. Wheat yield with happy seeder plots were 18% and 15 % higher than minimum and conventionally tilled plots respectively. Generally, differences between removal of rice straw and burning of rice straw were more pronounced; removal of rice straw had positive influence on growth, yield components, yield and grain quality. Increased grain weight per spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield were recorded with burning of rice straw. Wheat yield with removal of rice straw was 17.5% and 14.55% higher than burning of rice straw respectively. The happy seeder yield was 5.2 t/ ha -1 which was higher in comparison with other tillage practices. Zero tillage showed positive association with protein contents but negative association with carbohydrate contents. Zero tillage was found best among all other tillage practices in rice-wheat cropping system of Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan.

With the start of the codification of Muslim Personal Law in the Muslim countries, the question of exclusion and deprivation of orphan grand-children of the deceased from heir ship has gained importance. Bringing of section 4 on statute book was the result of the recommendations of the Commission on Marriage and Family Laws 1956. It was based on so-called ijtihād which caused confusion in the Islamic law of inheritance. Hence by declaring the section 4 repugnant to the injunctions of Islam, the Federal Shariʻat Court observed that the concept of “compulsory will” is an appropriate alternate to this problem. The court explains that making a will in favor of orphan grandchildren out of an estate of grandparents to the extent of one third would be very plausible solution to meet the socio- economic problem. The article aims to elaborate the concept of making of a will specially wasiyat wajiba in favor of orphan grandchildren. Various juristic opinions, rulings and legislation of Muslim countries have been analyzed in this regard. Majority of jurists are of the opinion that the making of will in the said case is only recommended and not mandatory. However according to some jurists it is mandatory. In this condition the legislative body may take steps to amend the law so as to bring the said provision in conformity with the injunctions of Islam.

Diversity of Whiteflies Aleyrodidae: Homoptera in Punjab Pakistan

The present research on diversity of whiteflies in the Punjab has resulted in the identification of 70 species under 19 genera and one subfamily. Of these, 10 species are new to science and 27 are new records for Pakistan. Keys have been prepared for different genera and species in the Punjab. The new species have been illustrated and described in detail, while only the differential characters, if any, are given in case of genera and already described species. The distribution of species in the Punjab has also been mapped out. Of the whitefly species found in different areas of the Punjab, Faisalabad, Multan, Rahim Yar Khan and Sialkot had the higher species richness than other regions sampled in this study. The species evenness was highest in Dera Ghazi Khan. Species richness and evenness were calculated using Shannon-Weiner biodiversity indices
