In many arid and semi-arid regions, use of brackish ground water has become necessary for irrigation to balance rapidly increasing water demands. Addition of organic material such as farm manure and crop residues would be useful in improving soils that are otherwise deteriorated when brackish water is used for irrigation. Keeping in view role of mulching and farm manure in ameliorating ill effects of brackish water, two years (2009- 2011) field studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of mulching (control, 25, 50, 75 and 100 % soil cover) and farm manure (control, 10, 20 and 30 Mg ha-1) on water use efficiency, soil properties and crop growth. A randomized complete block design with four replications was followed for laying out the experiments. Four field studies were conducted at the research farms of the College of Agriculture D. G. Khan, Sub Campus of University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. In Study-1, two experiments were conducted following cotton- wheat rotation and in Study-2, two experiments were conducted following mung-wheat rotation. Crops were grown during their normal planting seasons, with recommended seed rate and planting methodology. These crops were irrigated with brackish water and measured amount of irrigation was ensured using cut-throat flume. Soil samples collected from 0-15, 15-30, 30-45, 45-60, 60-90 and 90-120 cm soil depth before sowing and at each crop harvest, were analyzed for EC1:5, pH, bulk density, N, P, K and organic carbon concentration. It was observed that the farm manure at 30 Mg ha-1 (FM4) and mulch at 7.6 Mg-1 ha (M5, 100 % SC) produced the maximum cotton, wheat and mung crop yield as compared to control. Whereas economic and marginal analysis indicates that FM4 gave more economical yield as compared to all other levels of farm manure and mulch during both of the years. As for as soil properties were concerned more soil bulk density was found in controlled treatments while less was found in M5 and FM4. Infiltration rate significantly decreased in M5 and FM4 applied plots compared to control. Maximum EC1:5 was obtained in control, where as minimum value was obtained in FM4 (30 Mg ha-1) and M5 (100 % Soil cover). Maximum values of NPK and soil organic carbon (SOC) contents were observed at maximum level of mulching (M5) and farm manure (FM4) as compared to control. The highest values of NPK, SOC, EC1:5, SAR, pH, soil bulk density and salt accumulation was observed at upper soil depth compared to lower soil depth whereas percent increase was more in lower soil depths as compared to upper soil depths. Maximum water use efficiency was obtained in case of FM4 and M5 as compared to control. Minimum salt concentration were observed in case of M5 (100 % soil coverage was done) and FM3 (20 Mg ha-1). Root length density of wheat crop was more in M5 and FM4 as compared to control and in upper soil layers as compared to lower soil layers. It is clear from the results that manuring and mulching improves the water use efficiency, physical and chemical properties of soil, enhance the yield of cotton, wheat and mung crops and also helpful in ameliorating ill effects of brackish water on soil and crop characteristics.

TO COMPARE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TRUNK STABILIZATION EXERCISE AND GENERAL EXERCISE IN NON-SPECIFIC CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN-A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Aim of study: To identify the effectiveness of particular trunk stabilization versus a general exercise in low back pain management. Methodology: An experimental study was conducted at the physiotherapy department of Dow University of Health Sciences, 52 participants with low backache were enrolled and assessed for pain intensity using Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and disability by using the Modified Oswestry Low Back Disability Index (MOLBDQ-I). Through equal randomization one group got their low back pain treated through trunk stabilization exercises while the other with general exercises, 3times/week* 4weeks. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 by applying non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: This study demonstrated that males and females are equally affected by chronic low back pain. Trunk stabilizing and general exercise regimes both significantly reduced the pain and disability in the study population but the effectiveness of trunk stabilizing exercises were significantly superior in reducing pain. Limitations and Future Implications: Study did not include a control group that received no intervention. It would be valuable to assess the cost-effectiveness of trunk stabilization exercises compared to general exercises or other interventions. Originality: Trunk stabilizing exercises are superior in reducing pain, disability, and restoring functional mobility than general exercises in chronic back pain. Conclusion: Trunk stabilizing exercises are superior in reducing pain, disability, and restoring functional mobility than general exercises in chronic back pain.

Model Information System for Educational Administrators in Pakistan

The ultimate objective of this research is to develop a draft model for educational administrators in Pakistan. To achieve this objective a mixed methods research design was used and the study was completed in different phases. In the first phase, literature search was carried out by using standard sources and tools for the better understanding of theoretical and technical aspects of the study. Major areas covered in the literature review include: a) a discussion of the information overload in this information age and its burden on information searcher and user. Furthermore, how an Information System (IS) can help the information searcher/user. The discussion goes forward and discusses the case of educational administrators as information searchers and users; b) the design considerations of an educational information system along with available examples of information systems of the world are part of the review. A review of related studies is also given; c) the information needs, seeking behavior and work tasks etc of educational administrators are also presented; and d) the last section presents an overview of Pakistani perspective i.e., educational administration, information system and networks in education, etc. A review of related studies is also presented in this section. This thorough literature search and review led to the second phase of the study i.e. the survey instruments development. In this phase the quantitative data were collected with the help of survey instruments. For finding the information needs and seeking behavior through questionnaire survey, a selected group of experts from the public sector institutes, who, in their discharge of day to day administrative work, have to depend upon the information system in education, were identified with the help of reviewed literature and discussion with experts. Thus the educational administrators i.e., Registrars/Deans/Heads of Departments in universities and principals of schools and colleges (public sector) were identified as the target population and were selected through multistage cluster sampling. The respondents were from the Punjab province and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). In total, 297 (99%) responses were received and analyzed quantitatively. Interviews of three different categories of experts (i.e., educational administrators, Information and library professionals, and Information system experts) were also conducted for the in- depth understanding of respondents’ point of view and phenomena under study. The purposively selected sample of interviewees was working in well known institutes (public and private sectors) of Punjab province and ICT and had better understanding of the area under study. Fifty five interview responses were qualitatively analyzed. In the third phase, an initial draft of a centralized information system entitled ‘Pakistan National Information System for Educational Administrators-PAK-NISEA’ accessible through integrated web-based environment was proposed on the basis of findings of the study. The initial draft was sent to the purposively selected experts of Library & Information Science, Information System and Education within the country and abroad. In the final phase, the initial draft model was revised and finalized for presentation in the light of responses by 28 experts. The development of the information system is proposed in phases by using the Spiral Model. Services and access mechanism are tried to be made more user-centered with the help of Knowledge Environment Model. Major components of the model include: primary users; geographic acquisition and distribution coverage and type of information acquired; media classification; information acquisition; information selection; information processing; information storage; products and services; and management structure and funding.
