Zn-Ni and Zn-Co alloy coatings with 5-18 at% Ni and 8-25 at% Co have been prepared by DC plating in additive free chloride baths. Effects of bath composition on the alloy composition, texture, grain size, morphology and hardness were investigated. Potentiodynamic anodic stripping, reverse chronopotentiometry were employed in combination with XRD and EDS to correctly determine the electro-dissolution (dezincification) behavior of alloy electrodeposits. Potentiodynamic cyclic stripping was also performed to prepare compact Zn-Co electrodeposits. Zn-rich alloy deposits are predominantly formed by DC plating in these baths due to anomalous codeposition. With the help of careful cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometry, chronoamperometry, and (potentiodynamic) cyclic voltammetry, it has been established for the first time in this work that it is primarily the electrochemical potential that determines the deposition mode. Between the window of normal codeposition where nickel or cobalt rich phases are deposited and anomalous codeposition where zinc-rich phases are formed, a range on electrochemical potential exists where the formation of zinc hydroxide hinders the electrodeposition and cathodic current mostly becomes insignificant. A shift from this region to the cathodic direction allows anomalous codeposition of zinc and nobler alloy constituent. A shift in the anodic direction may again allow cathodic deposition of nobler constituent with under-potential deposition of zinc. The transition potentials depend on bath composition and temperature. Hydrothermal oxidation of Zn, Zn-Ni and Zn-Co electrodeposited on conducting substrates resulted in wide variety of nanostructures depending on the oxidation temperature and alloy content. In case of pure electrodeposited zinc, nanorods with diameter ranging from 300-800nm are seen at oxidation temperature of 100oC. The size of nanorods becomes coarser with rise in oxidation temperature. Hydrothermal oxidation of Zn-Ni alloys resulted in the doped ZnO nanostructures with quantity of dopant ranging from 2 at% to 11 at%. Not only nanorods and nanowires are synthesized by this technique, but also novel structures like nanotulips, hollow nanocones, faceted nanotubes and electronically translucent nanosheets arranged are obtained. Hydrothermal oxidation of Zn-Co alloys resulted in hollow and tubular ZnO nanostructures with doping of cobalt around 2at%. The doped ZnO nanostructures become finer with a rise in synthesis temperature. Hence, dopant and temperature exhibit synergistic effects in determining the morphology of the ZnO nanostructures grown by hydrothermal oxidation of electrodeposited nanocrystalline alloys.

Work-family conflict and fear of COVID-19 and its relationship with the physical and mental health of Pakistani working women

Work-family conflict is a conflict between societal expectations and the interaction of interrelated work and family domains. It is essential to understand the impact of COVID-19 on working women's physical and mental health in Pakistan to advise better health policy. This research aims to determine work-family conflict’s impact on working women’s physical and mental health. Through non-probability sampling, 100 working women were sampled online across different cities of Pakistan. The participants were selected from different working fields. Only women above the age of 20 years were eligible for participation in this study. The study found that work-family conflict positively correlates with the fear of COVID19, blood pressure, depression, and anxiety symptoms. Psychologists, counselors, and general physicians for primary and preventive care in Pakistan need to work towards counselling and supporting the health needs of working women to prevent biopsychosocial problems related to work-family conflict and fear of COVID-19. Keywords: anxiety, blood pressure, depression, fear of covid-19, work-family conflict.

Bacterial Assisted Phytoremediation of Crude Oil-Contaminated Soil

Petroleum hydrocarbons are recalcitrant compounds and their adverse environmental and public health effects demand that efficient and eco-friendly remediation technologies be devised as countermeasures. The synergistic use of plants and bacteria is considered as one of the efficient technologies for the restoration of crude oil-contaminated soil. The studies performed in this thesis were aimed to (ⅰ) isolate and characterize bacteria associated with the plants growing well in crude oil-contaminated soil, (ⅱ) study the effect of augmentation of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria on plant growth and crude oil degradation in vitro and in vivo. A large number of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria were isolated from the rhizospheric soil, root and shoot interior of grasses (Lolium perenne, Leptochloa fusca, Brachiaria mutica) and trees (Leucaena leucocephala and Acacia ampliceps) vegetated in crude oil-contaminated soil. The rhizospheric soil yielded 22 (59.45%), root interior yielded 9 (24.32%) and shoot interior yielded 6 (16.21%) hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. These bacteria possessed genes encoding alkane hydroxylase and showed multiple plant growth-promoting activities. Bacillus (48.64%) and Acinetobacter (18.91%) were dominant genera found in this study. Green house studies revealed that augmentation with crude oil-degrading bacteria enhanced plant growth and crude oil degradation. Colonization and metabolic activity of the endophytes were higher in the rhizosphere and endosphere of B. mutica than L. fusca. The plant species affected not only colonization pattern and biofilm formation of the inoculated bacteria in the rhizosphere and endosphere of the host plant, but also affected the expression of alkane hydroxylase gene, alkB. The beneficial plant-bacteria partnership was applied in the vicinity of an oil exploration and production company for the remediation of crude oil-contaminated soil. Bacterial augmentation improved plant growth, enhanced crude oil degradation, and reduced soil toxicity and these were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those where plants or bacteria were used individually. A positive relationship (r = 0.70) observed xiv between alkB gene expression and crude oil reduction indicates that expression of catabolic gene (alkB) is important for hydrocarbon mineralization. On the basis of in vitro and in vivo studies, it is concluded that for practical application, support of potential bacteria combined with the grasses is more effective approach than the use of plants and bacteria individually. This technology can be applied for effective remediation of crude oil-polluted sites.
