Studies to assess the response of spring planted sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) to exogenous application of abscisic acid following different irrigation schedules were carried out at the Agronomic Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan were conducted for two consecutive years; 2008 and 2009. In one experiment, three irrigation schedules viz. four irrigations (25 DAS, bud initiation, flower initiation and achene formation), three irrigations (25 DAS, flower initiation and achene formation) and three irrigations (25 DAS, bud initiation, and achene formation) were subjected to exogenous application of different concentrations (0, 5μm and 10μm) of ABA at bud initiation or at flower initiation. In the 2 nd experiment different irrigation and ABA application schedules i.e. four irrigations (25 DAS, at bud initiation, at flower initiation and at achene formation) and no ABA, three irrigations (25 DAS, at flower initiation and at achene formation) and no ABA, three irrigations (25 DAS, at flower initiation and at achene formation) and ABA spray at bud initiation, three irrigations (25 DAS, at bud initiation and at achene formation) and no ABA, three irrigations(25 DAS, at bud initiation and at achene formation) and ABA spray at flower initiation were tested for three hybrids (DK-4040, S-278 and SF-187). The experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement and with three replications in each experiment. In the 1 st experiment exogenous application of 5μM ABA under drought at bud initiation stage significantly increased plant height, head diameter, number of achenes per head, 1000-achene weight, achene yield and oil yield over no ABA. It also improved water relations of sunflower by improving water potential and turgor pressure and decreased amount of compatible solutes which indicates that exogenous application of ABA was helpful in enhancing drought tolerance in sunflower. Foliar application of 5μM ABA at flower initiation under drought stress at this stage also increased plant height, head diameter, number of achenes per head, 1000-achene weight, achene yield and oil yield over no ABA but this increase was lesser than exogenous application of 5μM ABA at bud initiation after imposition of drought stress at this stage. In the 2 nd experiment exogenous application of ABA under drought at either stage (bud or flower initiation) was helpful in ameliorating drought stress in sunflower hybrids; however response was better when ABA was applied at bud initiation than at flower initiation. Sunflower hybrid DK-4040 showed better enhancement of drought tolerance by exogenous application of ABA than SF-187 and S-278 because it showed more improvement in agronomic parameters, growth, quality, water relations and compatible solutes.

Influence of Educational and Financial Status of Parents on the Academic Performance of Secondary School Students: A Case Study in Hyderabad Division-Sindh

This research is conducted, in order to analyze the students’ academic performance at secondary school level in Pakistan. This is a case study conducted in Hyderabad Division of Sindh Province in Pakistan. The study was focused to the students who have passed matriculation class (Class-X), equivalent to secondary level in Pakistan(10 years of education). Sample size of 1097 higher Secondary level students were randomly selected from various colleges and schools in a way that around 150 students should take part in the survey from each institute. The sample selection was further divided on gender (Male = 448, Female = 648) and locale (Urban=455, Rural=641) basis. A data collection questionnaire was developed by the researchers and implemented for data collection. After collection of the data from desired population, the statistical analysis based on Pearson’s Chi-square and Correlation models were carried out in SPSS. The conclusion inferred from the data analysis of the study, strongly revealed that the students’ academic achievement at high school secondary level was highly associated to their parent’s educational level and socio-economic background. Therefore, it is strongly recommended financial condition of the population must be enhanced by taking appropriate measures. In order to coup tough financial conditions at their homes, deprived students should be provided adequate scholarships. Free stationary and books should also be provided at schools.

Expression of Circadian Clock and Cell Cycle Genes in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Circadian rhythms are endogenous, self-sustained oscillations of multiple biological processes with approximately 24-hr rhythmicity. Circadian genes and their protein products constitute the molecular components of the circadian oscillator that form positive/negative feedback loops and generate circadian rhythms. The circadian regulation extends beyond clock genes to involve various clock-controlled genes (CCGs) that include various cell cycle genes. Aberrant expression of circadian clock genes could have important consequences on the transactivation of downstream targets that control the cell cycle and on the ability of cells to undergo apoptosis. This may lead to genomic instability and accelerated cellular proliferation potentially promoting carcinogenesis. The current study was carried out to gain further insights into the roles of circadian genes and their downstream targets (cell cycle genes) in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). We analyzed peripheral blood from 37 CLL patients and equal number of their age- and sex-matched healthy controls for the expression of the four circadian clock and three cell cycle genes. The expression levels of BMAL1, PER1, PER2,MYC, CYCLIN D1 and WEE1 were significantly impaired in CLL cases compared with those in healthy individuals (P < 0.001). BMAL1, PER1, PER2 and WEE1 were found down regulated whereas MYC and CYCLIN D1 were found upregulated. This implies that the deregulated expression of circadian clock genes through their influence on downstream clock-controlled cell cycle genes can play a role in the manifestation of CLL. Moreover, when expression levels of abovementioned genes were compared between shift workers and non-shift workers within the CLL group, the expression levels were more aberrant in shiftworkers compared to non-shift workers. This indicates that circadian dysregulation in terms of shift work may also be a contributing factor in the etiology of CLL. In the current study, serum melatonin levels were also determined in 37 CLL cases and their healthy controls. Serum melatonin levels were found significantly low (P<0.05) in CLL subjects as compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, melatonin levels were found still lower in shift workers as compared to non-shift workers within CLL group. Our results suggest that down regulation of BMAL1, PER1 and PER2 is related to upregulation of Cyclin D1, MYC and down regulation of WEE1 in CLL. Thus, aberrant expression of clock genes can lead to abnormal expression of downstream cell-cycle genes and play a role in the manifestation of CLL. Moreover, low melatonin levels in CLL patients may play a part in xivderegulation of circadian clock gene expression and shiftwork serves as a further contributing factor to an already perturbed circadian clock genes’ expression and low melatonin levels in CLL.
