Maize genotypes including 64 in number were evaluated at early stage in greenhouse with the soil having 40-100% moisture levels for different seedling parameters on various genetic analysis revealed that the highest estimates of heritability were found for root fresh weight, root volume and shoot fresh weight, at 40% soil moisture providing the evidence that these plant characters are under the control of additive genetic effects. The results showed that selection should evolve the genetic material with improved characteristics within short time. The single linkage cluster analysis and principle component analysis identified the variation among these parameters and in genotypes under the different moisture levels. Genotypes 21 in number with moderately tolerant and drought susceptible backgrounds were further evaluated by using Inter simple sequence repeats markers to ascertain their biodiversity. So 14 number of parents with determined diversity were finally selected and were crossed in line x tester fashion and their F1 along with their related parents were grown using randomized complete block design with 3 replications under normal and 50% of normal irrigation field conditions. All the cultural and other practices were kept uniform to both plantings except irrigation. Various agronomic and physiological parameters were recorded and analyzed for analysis of variance, genotypic and phenotypic correlation, principle component analysis, cluster analysis, general combining ability analysis and specific combining ability analysis for both conditions. Highest range of broad sense heritability with higher genetic advance regarding different plant characteristics depicted that these plant characters were controlled by additive genetic effects. So, it indicates that a fast genetic improvement is found in the experimental material. Clusters with superior genotypes showed the genetic potential of accession to transfer the desirable genes to improve yield in maize. The best combiners for both normal and 50% of normal irrigation field conditions were L3 x T4 (015114 x EV-6098), L9 x T4 (015129 x EV-6098), L9 x T1 (015129 x Sahiwal-2002). These crosses might be useful as transgressive seggregants in subsequent generations. The lines viz 014955, 015084, 015114, Sahiwal-2002, Agaiti-2002, Ev-5098 and Ev-6098 were found as best parents. These lines may be exploited in future breeding program for drought conditions. On the basis of different inheritance pattern of each parameter, it was suggested that overall performance of the lines and their all possible combinations might be more useful while selecting for water stress condition.

The Socio-Economic Implications of Decline in Artisanal Fishing and its Effect on Women: A Case Study of Shams Pir Island, Karachi

Artisanal fishing is carried out in the coastal villages of Karachi. Through centuries, these fishing villages have maintained their traditional practices of fishing. Shams Pir Island is in vicinity of Karachi coast. The main occupation of islanders is artisanal fishing which is extremely threatened by various factors. Historically, in coastal communities of Karachi, women were part of fishing and its related activities. With the decline in traditional fishing methods, females have been withdrawn from fishing work. Implications of this process have been drastic for fishing households such as increased poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation etc. The research is conducted to highlight these problems especially from gender perspective. It is exclusively based on females of Shams Pir Island. Female’s socio-economic conditions, family status, perceptions on different contemporary issues pertaining to the endangered livelihood of their family and its relation with environmental changes is investigated in particular. In total, sixty women representing fishing households, few community leaders and representatives of fisher folk’s NGO were interviewed. The results emphasized the livelihood issues of females and their perceptions on environment and climate change. The vulnerabilities of females in fishing communities have been discussed in detail. ______

Relationship Between Education Leaders Self-Reported Emotions and Institutional Functioning Approachers in Higher Education Institutions

Educational leadership within institutions is an emotional process in which leaders express emotions and try to arouse them in their colleagues. Concurrently with a growing literature on institutional environment, leader-colleague emotional exchange, and individual and institutional psychodynamics, a focus of research and studies has tilted towards the exploration of the awareness and utilization of leaders’ and colleagues’ emotions within institutions. With reference to public and private sector higher education institutions (HEIs) in Karachi, how and when do the educational leaders use their emotions for their institution’s functioning and whether their emotions have any effect on the administrative, academic and other institutions related affairs, is an area to explore.Since the study on the relationship between designated educational leaders’ (DELs) emotions and institutional functioning approaches is relatively new in the field of psychodynamics of leadership in education, the study adopted an exploratory-sequentialdesign of mixed-method approach to explore the awareness and extent to which the educational leaders utilize emotions for their respective higher education institutions’ (HEI) functioning. The study participants were DELs serving at the executive, administrative and operative levels of the public and private HEIs in Karachi. This study aims to explore DELs’ awareness and stance on the use of their emotions in different institutional processes of goal orientation, decision making, and human relations, at different levels of their HEIs. The aspect of the psychodynamics of educational leadership in the HEIs, the involvement of DELs’ self-reported emotions in effective institutional functioning, defining of leadership styles, skills and approaches on psychodynamic and other selected theoretical inter-linkages have contributed to the existing literature on educational leadership.
