This dissertation communicates an explorative endeavor of the ethnobotany and pharmacognosy of folk medicines of Deosai plateau; a cold desert area of 7200km2, mostly located at an elevation of more than 4000m above the sea level. The plateau is an uninhabitable mountainous terrain surrounded by deep valleys covered with snow for almost nine months of the year. A structured questionnaire was used for documentation of folk knowledge regarding native plants used by Deosai associated communities. The localities analyzed for the pharmacognostic exploration included Dass Khirum Nalla, Chilim, Choti Deosai, Barri Deosai, Burzil, Sardar Kothi of District Astore, Gilgit-Baltistan Province, Pakistan. Formal interviews for documenting traditional knowledge regarding folk medicines of the area were gathered from traditional healers, hakeems, shepherds, farmers and forest guards of Deosai National Park. Ethnopharmacognostic of the drugs like texture, fracture, color, size, surface and broken surface features were noted. The plants used in folk remedies were collected from their natural habitats and submitted to Hazara University Herbarium, as future reference. It was observed that 93 plant species belonging to 38 families were used as folk remedies in the inaccessible areas of Deosai for treating diseases like dyspepsia, asthma, coughs, abdominal pain, tonic, expectorant, anathematic, carminative, skin diseases, snakebites, jaundice, diarrhea and dysentery. Folk preparations used for different ailments were documented. Field records in Deosai supported by observations of the community experts revealed that vegetation of the area was generally threatened with the indiscriminate use by the communities and their livestock, which has resulted in extinction pressure on 17 precious medicinal plants, which needs proper location-specific analyses for their rehabilitation/recovery of the species. The trends like uprooting medicinal plants, overgrazing, habitat fragmentation, and habitat loss due to soil erosion and land sliding are threatening plant life. Proper conservation efforts are necessary for sustainable development of plant resources especially medicinal plants for improved livelihood of the far placed communities of Deosai.

Multiple Intelligences: Learners VS Teachers

The study investigated the relationship of the multiple intelligences of the Bachelor of Secondary Education students and their teachers in their major subjects. Four hundred eighty-five (485) BSED students and twenty-two (22) teachers in their respective major subjects participated. The result demonstrates statistically significant in the multiple intelligences of the Bachelors of Secondary Education Major in Technology and Livelihood Education and Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health and their teachers in their respective major subjects. However, result also demonstrates no significance in the multiple intelligences of the Bachelors of Secondary Education Major in Filipino, English, and Mathematics and their teachers in their respective major subjects. The study shows that the dominant intelligences of the BSED students and their teachers in their major subjects are the interpersonal, intrapersonal, and their suited intelligences for their major subjects. The result evidently showed that the BSED students and their major teachers are people and self smart. This only shows that as a teacher, one should know how to socialize appropriately with others and have a deeper understanding with themselves. It also showed that the teachers are really smarter than their students in their major field of specialization. Educators must also consider the multiple intelligences of their students to fully develop their learning capabilities.

Investigating the Activity of Zirconia As a Catalyst and As a Support for Noble Metals in Organic Oxidation Reactions

Alcohols and cyclic alkanes oxidation, in an environment friendly protocol, was carried out in a typical batch reactor. These reactions were carried out in solvent free conditions and/or in eco-friendly solvents using molecular oxygen as the only oxidant and ZrO2 and/or ZrO2 supported noble metals (Pt, Pd) as catalysts. The influence of different reaction parameters (speed of agitation, reaction time, and temperature), catalyst parameters (calcination temperature and loading), and oxygen partial pressure on the catalyst performance was studied. Different modern techniques such as (FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX, surface and pores size analyzer and particle size analyzer) were used for the characterization of catalyst. ZrO2 calcined at 1223 K was found to be more active as a single catalyst than the one calcined at 723 K for alcohol oxidation to the corresponding carbonyl products under solvent free conditions and in ecofriendly solvent as well. Platinum supported on zirconia was highly active and selective for oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in n- heptane, and toluene to benzoic acid in both solvent free conditions and in aqueous medium. Similarly, zirconia supported Pt or Pd catalysts were tested for cyclohexane oxidation in solvent free conditions and for phenol oxidation in aqueous medium. Both catalysts have shown magnificent catalytic activity. Bismuth was added as a promoter to these catalysts. Bismuth promoted Pt/ZrO2 has shown outstanding catalytic performance. These catalysts are insoluble in the reaction mixture and can be easily separated by simple filtration and reused. Typical batch reactor’s kinetic data were obtained and fitted to the classical Langmuir–Hinshelwood, Mars–van Krevelen and as well as to the Eley-Rideal model of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions. In alcohol oxidation reactions the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model was found to give a better fit. The rate-determining step was proposed to involve direct interaction of an adsorbed oxidizing species with the adsorbed reactant or an intermediate product of the reactant. While in toluene oxidation the Eley-Rideal model was found to give a better fit. Eley-Rideal mechanism envisages reaction between adsorbed oxygen with hydrocarbon molecules from the fluid phase. The calculated apparent activation energy and agitation effect have shown the absence of mass transfer effect.
