In the present study, a series of experiments were conducted in the Botanic Gardens of the Department of Botany, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad to test the relative effectivness of the three osmolytes in alleviating the adverse effects of drought stress on maize plants. The osmolytes were applied through different modes at different growth stages of maize plants under non-stress or water stress conditions. In the first experiment, varying levels (0, 30 and 60 mM) of each of the osmolytes were applied as foliar spray and presowing treatment of seeds of two cultivars (Agaiti-2002 and EV-1098). The plants raised from the treated seeds were grown in plastic pots filled with sandy loam soil under greenhouse conditions. After two weeks of the imposition of water stress, different levels (0, 30, and 60 mM) of each of the osmolytes were exogenously applied as a foliar spray to maize plants at the seedling, vegetative or both seedling and vegetative stages when grown under non-stress or water stress conditions (60% field capacity). Tween-20 (0.1%) was used as a surfactant for foliar spray. It was found that 30 mM of GB, or proline or trehalose was the most effective in promoting seedling growth under water stress conditions. However, GB and proline were more effective than trehalose in ameliorating the adverse effects of water stress on growth of both maize cultivars. It was found that effective concentration of exogenously applied osmolytes through seed soaking or through foliar application is 30 mM. During the 2 nd experiment the effective concentrations of these osmolytes (GB, proline and trehalose) as estimated from the 1 st experiment were applied as pre-sowing seed treatment and as foliar spray at different growth stages (seedling, vegetative and seedling+vegetative) as in the 1 st experiment to observe their effects in inducing drought tolerance maize plants in relation to various physiological and biochemical attributes. Exogenous application of osmolytes as presowing seed treatment or as foliar spray at different growth stages increased the photosynthetic rate of the plants of both cultivars that was associated with stomatal as well as non-stomatal factors. Plant water status as reflected by leaf water potential and leaf relative water content (RWC) was improved by the exogenously applied organic solutes and it was associated with leaf osmotic potential, endogenous GB and proline, which suggests the role of these osmolytes in osmotic adjustment. Exogenous application of these osmolytes increased the accumulation of nutrients particularly K, and shoot nutrient use efficiency in maize plants under water stress conditions. Exogenous application of compatible solutes enhanced the antioxidant capacity of drought stressed maize plants by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD and CAT) and non-enzymatic compounds (phenolics, tocopherols and ascorbic acid) which is evident from the reduced MDA contents determined in the present study. Exogenously applied different osmolytes enhanced the seed and seed oil quality of both maize cultivars. Seed sugar, seed oil, seed protein, seed macro- and micronutriets increased due to exogenous application of these osmolytes. Moreover, improved seed oil quality was associated with enhanced oil unsaturation in terms of increased in oleic and linoleic acid contents as well as the oil lipophilic antioxidants (tocopherols, phenolics, flavonoids) which in-turn enhanced the oil antioxidant activity. Overall, exogenously applied different compatible solutes as a seed treatment or foliar application improved growth and yield of maize pants. Osmolyte-induced enhancement in growth and yield under water stress conditions was associated with increase in net CO 2 assimilation rate, plant water status, antioxidant capacity and nutrient accumulation, particularly of K. However, further studies are required to explicitly elucidate the mechanism of organic osmolytes influx through epidermis and target enzymes or metabolites to induce stress tolerance in plants. Moreover, further studies are important to work out cost-benefit ratios of the use of different organic osmolytes used in this study. This information will be undoubtedly beneficial for stakeholders, particularly the farmers.

Analysis of Mixed Method of the Effect of Dating Status on Sexual Behavior in Adolescents Grade XI at SMAXYZ Medan

Sexual behavior is any behavior that is driven by sexual desire, whether done alone, with the opposite sex or of the same sex, from feeling attracted, dating, flirting, and having sex. Dating status and sexual behavior are closely related. The increasing age of dating adolescents has an impact on increasing opportunities for sexual behavior. This study aimed to analyze the effect of dating status on sexual behavior in Grade XI at SMA XYZ Medan in 2020. This research was mixed method. The population was 413 adolescents, the sample used accidental sampling technique. For quantitative, there are 80 teenagers, including 39 boys and 41 girls. And 6 qualitative informants including teenagers who are dating, peers and teachers. Quantitative data were analyzed by using statistical tests with univariate, bivariate and triangulation. The results showed that the cross-tabulation value of the effect of dating status on sexual behavior in adolescents was p (0.000) <α (.05). There was an effect of dating status on sexual behavior in adolescents. Based on the qualitative results, the key informants stated that they were dating and had committed various sexual behaviors with their boyfriends, while the supporting informants, namely peers, stated that they were close friends with the key informants, knew the dating status and had seen sexual behavior carried out by the key informants. The conclusion that sexual behavior in adolescents at SMA XYZ was found. It is hoped that adolescents will maintain a friendly environment in social interactions and be more active in positive activities, so that unbeneficial activities such as those related to dating and sexual behavior can be avoided.

Effectiveness of Community Participation in Sustainable Forestry in Malakand Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

This study investigates the effectiveness of community participation in sustainable forestry in Malakand Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It studies the existing mechanism of community participation in the management of forest resources; identifying the factors paralyzing the execution of participatory/joint forest management and highlighting the benefits sharing strategy among different stockholders. To carry out this study qualitative methodology was employed. Four districts i.e. Swat, Shangla, Dir Upper and Chitral were purposively selected out of the total seven districts in Malakand Division. 24 Executive Body, 48 General Body members of the selected JFMCs and 24 Forest Department employees were individually interviewed in the selected districts. Moreover, 08 Focus Group Discussions were also conducted to ensure more reliable information. It was found that there was gigantic gap between the theoretical claims and practical implementation of participatory approach in the management of forest resources as the Forest Department had meager resources for the implementation of participatory approach in the management of forest resources. The, staff responsible for such activities, was neither available nor properly trained to perform their duties. The specialized staff had no proper service structure and incentives while working in far-flung hilly areas. Owing to economic and socio-cultural constraints, forest-non owners and women were excluded from the management of forest resources and its benefits. The royalty from the forest products was distributed among the forest owners on the basis of male members in a family. Females and forest-non owners were not given any share in it. Therefore, the poor people were not interested to participate in forest management activities without incentives. The study suggests that the capacity of Forest Department staff should be built and it should provide with financial resources for the proper implementation of participatory approach. The local masses should be mobilized and organized for active participation in the management of forest resources and the benefits sharing strategy should be made pro-poor and gender sensitive. Furthermore, it is suggested that separate women organizations (JFMCs) would be more effective in such areas where women are in close interaction/contact with forest resources and their socio-cultural setup does not allow them to participate in the same organizations with men.
