The nano silica spheres are synthesized through sol-gel process. These spheres have very surface area of around 920 m2/g and pore size of about 4.7 nm diameter and are good support material for the preparation of selective sorbent. The silica surface was activated by reacting with an organosilane coupling agent like 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (APTMS) by dispersion in appropriate reaction medium. This process sufficiently activated the inert silica surface for further attachment of organic moitities. Chelating ligands such as 1-napthyl-2-thiourea (ANTU), thiosemicarbazide (TSC) and capryl pyrazolone (CP) were chemically reacted with activated silica surface and functionalized sorbents are synthesized. FTIR, EDX and TGA analysis confirmed the successful immobilization of the organic moieties to the silica surface. After synthesis and characterization, the performance of the materials were tested as sorbents for the separation of heavy metals like Hg(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Ag(II), and Cr(III) from their aqueous solutions in batch experimental procedures using radiotracer technique. The results showed that the attached functional groups enhanced selectivity of the sorbent towards target metal ions. These functionalized sorbents displayed fast adsorption kinetics and entrapped high percentage of toxic heavy metals from spiked water samples. The adsorption processes were systematically monitored as a function of pH of the medium, agitation time, metal ions concentration and functionalized silica dosage. Effect of various interfering ions on the adsorption of these metals was investigated. Response of the sorbent and sorption process to temperature is also studied and various useful thermodynamic parameters like change in enthalpy (ΔH), entropy (ΔS) and free energy (ΔG) are derived and discussed. An attempt was made in this study to suggest possible mechanism for the uptake of the metal ion and to validate the experimental data by fitting into sorption models such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin Radushkevich D-R. Morris Webber, Lagergren and Richenberg‘s equations were applied to follow the kinetics of sorption process. Practical utility and environmental significance of the work was demonstrated. Regeneration of sorbent was carried out to explore the possibility of reuse of these sorbents. These sorbents could be effectively employed for environmental remediation of toxic heavy metals and will greatly improve the conditions of drinking water. Key words: silica nano particles, covalent grafting, adsorption, pollution abatement, radio tracer, Metals preconcentration, heavy metals, organic-inorganic hybrid

نظریہ فوقیت یا نسلی برتری: مذاہب عالم اور اسلامی تعلیمات کی روشنی میں ایک جائزہ

Race represents a specific caste, creed and a generation of a common ancestor. It has been a source of identification among different tribes and group of people, since humankind started life on this earth. With the passage of time different races have started using their racial backgrounds as negative sentiments which created superiority and inferiority complexes among people. Concepts of chosen people aroused in different races which created great gap, differences and hate in the society. The current research work is based upon the concept of superiority in Hinduism and Judaism, which will be further reviewed in the light of Islamic teachings.

Exploring Hepatoprotective and Regenerative Natural and Synthetic Compounds for the Treatment of Hepatitis

It is widely known that hepatitis and its complications such as cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma are one of the major health problems of the world especially since no specific treatment is available. In the present study we investigated the hepatoprotective and regenerative potential of the methanolic extract of the whole plant of Dodonaea viscosa and its ethyl acetate, aqueous, butanol and n-hexane fractions against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatoxicity in rats. Hepatoprotection was assessed in terms of reduction in serum enzymes (ALT, AST, and ALP) that occur after CCl4 injury, and by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The methanolic extract reduced the serum enzyme level (ALT, AST, and ALP) down to control levels despite CCl4 treatment. It also reduced the CCl4-induced damaged area to 0% as assessed by histopathology. The CD68+ macrophages were also reduced in number around the central vein area by the methanolic extract. These hepatoprotective effects were better than the positive control silymarin. Similar hepatoprotective activities were found with the ethyl acetate, and aqueous fractions of the methanolic extract. The butanol and n-hexane fractions showed elevated levels of ALT, AST and ALP as compared to the positive control silymarin. Histopathology showed ~30% damage to the liver cells with the butanol and n-hexane fractions which still showed some protective activity compared to the CCl4 treated control. HPLC fingerprinting suggested that hautriwaic acid and viscosine present in the methanolic extract and its ethyl acetate, and aqueous fractions may be responsible for this hepatoprotective activity of Dodonaea viscosa which was confirmed by in-vivo experiments. Another, novel approach was used to investigate the hepatoprotective and anti-cirrhotic effect of silymarin and viscosine coated gold nanoparticles, a trend towards nanomedicine.
