The present study based on extraction of copper from indigenous sources in Darosh area Chitral Khyber Pukhtun Khwa (KPK) and copper concentrate from Saindak (Bluchistan) of Pakistan was conducted by using hydrometallurgical techniques. The convenient representative sampling involved collection of high grade ores selected by hand sorting for studies. The samples were tested by different techniques involving chemical analyses, roasting with and without oxidants/ additives prior to leaching. The chemical analyses have shown that on an average these ore samples contained 20 percent Copper, 2.01 percent Iron, 1.54 percent Zinc, 0.074 percent Lead, 2.35 ppm Silver, 1.0 ppm Gold and 20 percent Sulfur. The XRD analysis of the samples has shown the presence of dominant Chalcopyrite and subordinate amount of Chalcocite, Azurite, Tetrahedrite, Malachite as other copper minerals. The dominant accessory/ gangue minerals are muscovite and other carbonates, silicates. A suitable and cheap method to process the sulfide copper containing chalcopyrite ore was investigated by thermo-chemical processes. The higher amount of copper leaching was 70 to 75 percent achieved by prior roasting at 650oC. The effect of various oxidants to increase copper leaching was also investigated during roasting of sulfide ores sample at 5000C to 6500C. The oxidants used for the purpose were sodium per sulfate, sodium chlorate, potassium chlorate, sodium nitrate, and sodium nitrite. The copper leaching was only 70 percent achieved by roasting with sodium per sulfate at 5000C. The new method was developed for economic utilization of copper indigenous ores. The research introducing a series of novel additives used first time in such roasting. The 23 additives have properties of ions and vapors such as nitrate, chlorate, sulfate, phosphate, acetate, oxalate, carbonate, and ammonia. Some of these ionic species were used only in aqueous medium as reported in literature. The additive’s dissociation products in the form of gas or vapors were investigated during roasting in dry and solid medium in present study. The novel processes developed envisaged that the vapor-solid metallurgy of complex copper sulfide ores changes the mineralogy into leachable minerals. The additive roast leach processes gave about 85 percent to 98 percent copper leaching with low range of roasting temperature and roasting time. The XRD analysis of additive roasted sample has shown the formation of sulfur rich mineral of copper as Cubanite. It is prove that the additive roast leach processes have friendly environment by reducing sulfur dioxide emission. The combined effect of additives in two - stage roasting at lower range of temperatures gave better results with reducing roasting time. The best combination of additive’s products found was chloride – sulfate of ammonium. This combination is also better in aqueous medium of direct leach processes as reported in literature. The additive roast leach processes gave higher percentage of copper leaching with 2.5 percent sulfuric acid in 1:5 solid liquid ratio within very short time. The kinetics of roasting processes was studied. The roasting results were compared with the help of kinetic models of Sharp (1966) to investigate the mechanism of reactions. It was found the reactions mechanism during the roasting ranges from boundary phase reaction to diffusion reaction. It was found that roasting with additives has decreased the activation energy in order to chloride > chloride-sulfate > nitrate > sulfate.

Combatting Religious Extremism in Pakistan from the Youth Perspective

The rise of Islam, which emerged as a panacea for the world problems is seen as a problem itself by the west today. The reason for this blame is the rise of extremism and Islam phobia in the western societies. This has serious implicat-ions for personal, communal, national and international security. The involve-ment of youth in extremist exertions is very high. They are being more action-oriented, easy to be influenced by radical ideologies and as an agent for thrus-ting social change.  Keeping in consideration the role of youth in adopting to or combatting extremism, it is imperative to find the perception of this important population about the problem under investigation. The research study was conducted in six universities in the federal capital Islamabad to reach to the youth’s population. The research was guided by research questions that aimed at exploring students’ perception about extremism and its various dimensions. The researcher collected data through an open-ended questionnaire from 1840 students to seek an in-depth understanding of the problem. In order to increase credibility in the findings, the researcher conducted focused group interview with 12 young faculty members. The data from the questionnaires were conver-ted into percentages based on common themes. The interview data set were thematically analyzed to understand the causes of extremism and its suggested solutions. Recommendations were suggested to tackle the menace of extremism in Pakistan.  

Adaptive Edge-Enhanced Correlation Based Robust and Real-Time Visual Tracking Framework and its Deployment in Machine Vision Systems

An adaptive edge-enhanced correlation based robust and real-time visual tracking framework, and two machine vision systems based on the framework are proposed. The visual tracking algorithm can track any object of interest in a video acquired from a stationary or moving camera. It can handle the real-world problems, such as noise, clutter, occlusion, uneven illumination, varying appearance, orientation, scale, and velocity of the maneuvering object, and object fading and obscuration in low contrast video at various zoom levels. The proposed machine vision systems are an active camera tracking system and a vision based system for a UGV (unmanned ground vehicle) to handle a road intersection. The core of the proposed visual tracking framework is an Edge Enhanced Back-propagation neural-network Controlled Fast Normalized Correlation (EE- BCFNC), which makes the object localization stage efficient and robust to noise, object fading, obscuration, and uneven illumination. The incorrect template initialization and template-drift problems of the traditional correlation tracker are handled by a best-match rectangle adjustment algorithm. The varying appearance of the object and the short-term neighboring clutter are addressed by a robust template- updating scheme. The background clutter and varying velocity of the object are handled by looking for the object only in a dynamically resizable search window, in which the likelihood of the presence of the object is high. The search window is created using the prediction and the prediction error of a Kalman filter. The effect of the long-term neighboring clutter is reduced by weighting the template pixels using a 2D Gaussian weighting window with adaptive standard deviation parameters. The occlusion is addressed by a data association technique. The varying scale of the object is handled by correlating the search window with three scales of the template, and accepting the best-match region that produces the highest peak in the three correlation surfaces. The proposed visual tracking algorithm is compared with the traditional correlation tracker and, in some cases, with the mean-shift and the condensation trackers on real-world imagery. The proposed algorithm outperforms them in robustness and executes at the speed of 25 to 75 frames/second depending on the current sizes of the adaptive template and the dynamic search window. The proposed active camera tracking system can be used to get the target always in focus (i.e. in the center of the video frame) regardless of the motion of the target in the scene. It feeds the target coordinates estimated by the visual tracking framework into a predictive open-loop car-following control (POL-CFC) algorithm which in turn generates the precise control signals for the pan-tilt motion of the camera. The performance analysis of the system shows that its percent overshoot, rise time, and maximum steady state error are 0%, 1.7 second, and ±1 pixel, respectively. The hardware of the proposed vision based system, that enables a UGV to handle a road intersection, consists of three on-board computers and three cameras (mounted on top of the UGV) looking towards the other three roads merging at the intersection. The software in each computer consists of a vehicle detector, the proposed tracker, and a finite state machine model (FSM) of the traffic. The information from the three FSMs is combined to make an autonomous decision whether it is safe for the UGV to cross the intersection or not. The results of the actual UGV experiments are provided to validate the robustness of the proposed system.
