Telephony networks are frequently connected to computers for speech processing to extract useful information such as automatic speaker identification (ASI). Matching of feature vectors extracted from speech sample of an unknown speaker, with models of registered speakers is the most time consuming component in real-time speaker identification systems. Time controlling parameters are size d and count T of extracted test feature vectors as well as size M , complexity and count N of models of registered speakers. Reported speedup techniques for Vector quantization (VQ) and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based ASI systems reduce test feature vector count T by pre-quantization and reduce candidate registered speakers N by pruning unlikely models which introduces accuracy degradation. Vantage point tree (VPT) indexing of code vectors has also been used to decrease the effect of parameter M on ASI speed for VQ based systems. Somehow parameter d has remained unexplored in ASI speedup studies. Speedup techniques for VQ based and GMM based real-time ASI without loss of accuracy are presented in this thesis. Speeding up closest code vector search (CCS) is focused for VQ based systems. Capability of partial distortion elimination (PDE), through reducing d parameter of codebook, was found more promising than VPT to speedup CCS. Advancing in this direction, speech signal stationarity has been capitalized to a greater extent than previously proposed technique of cluster size based sorting of code vectors to speedup PDE. Proximity relationship among code vectors established through Linde Buzo Gray (LBG) process of codebook generation has been substantiated. Based upon the high correlation of proximate code vectors, circular partial distortion elimination (CPDE) and toggling-CPDE algorithms have been proposed to speedup CCS. Further speedup for ASI is proposed through test feature vector visequence pruning (VSP) when a codebook proves unlikely during search of best match speaker. Empirical results presented in this thesis show that an average speedup factor up to 5.8 for 630 registered speakers of TIMIT 8kHz corpus and 6.6 for 230 speakers of NIST-1999 database have been achieved through integrating VSP and TCPDE. Speeding up potential of hierarchical speaker pruning (HSP) for faster ASI has also been demonstrated in this thesis. HSP prunes unlikely candidate speakers based on ranking results of coarse speaker models. Best match is then found from the detailed models of remaining speakers. VQ based and GMM based ASI systems are explored in depth for parameters governing the speedup performance of HSP. Using the smallest possible coarse model and pruning the largest number of detailed candidate models is the key objective for speedup through HSP. City block distance (CBD) is proposed instead of Euclidean distance (EUD) for ranking speakers in VQ based systems. This allows use of smaller codebook for ranking and pruning greater number of speakers. HSP has been ignored by previous authors for GMM based ASI systems due to discouraging speedup results in their studies of VQ-based systems. However, we achieved speedup factors up to 6.61 and 10.40 for GMM based ASI systems using HSP for 230 speaker from NIST-1999 and 630 speakers from TIMIT data, respectively. While speedup factors of up to 22.46 and 34.78 are achieved on TIMIT and NIST-1999 data for VQ based systems, respectively. All the speedup factors reported are with out any accuracy loss.

پاکستان وبھارت کے علمی اور دینی حلقوں میں یہ خبر بڑے رنج وغم کے ساتھ سنی گئی کہ۲۵/نومبر۱۹۸۳ء کوپاکستان کے ایک نامور ادیب،مصنف اور مؤرخ ڈاکٹر محمد ایوب قادری کراچی میں ٹریفک کے ایک حادثے میں جاں بحق ہوگئے۔ وفات کے وقت ان کی عمر۵۶برس کے لگ بھگ تھی۔
قادری صاحب روہیلکھنڈ کے مشہور تاریخی قصبے آنولہ کے رہنے والے تھے۔ان کی ابتدائی تعلیم بدایوں اوربریلی میں ہوئی۔تقسیم ملک کے بعد موصوف کراچی چلے گئے۔کراچی جاکر انھوں نے اپنی تعلیم جاری رکھی اوربالآخر اردو کالج کراچی میں شعبۂ اردو میں لیکچرار مقرر ہوئے اور محنت،لگن اورخلوص کی بدولت آخر میں شعبۂ اردو کے صدر بن گئے۔
قادری صاحب کوروہیلکھنڈ کی تاریخ، رجال اور اماکن پربڑی دسترس تھی۔اس کے علاوہ۱۸۵۷ء کی جنگِ آزادی کے ہیرو ان کی تحقیق کا محور تھے۔ انھوں نے مخدوم جہانیاںؒ کاایک تذکرہ لکھا اورمآثرالامراء کااردو میں ترجمہ کیا۔ مرحوم نے مجلہ اردو کالج کراچی کے کئی شاندار نمبرنکالے۔پاکستان اوربھارت کے علمی وادبی رسائل میں ان کے مضامین اکثرچھپتے رہتے تھے۔
۲۵/نومبر کی شام کو موصوف اپنے گھرواقع شمالی ناظم آباد سے چلے۔ابھی انھوں نے بمشکل سو سواسوگز کا فاصلہ طے کیاہوگا کہ ایک ویگن ان کے سرسے ٹکرا گئی اورموصوف موقع پرہی جان بحق ہوگئے۔
یہ بھی عجیب بات ہے کہ ان کے ایک حقیقی بھائی ابومعاویہ نعمت اﷲ قادری بھی ۲/فروری۱۹۸۱ء کولیاقت آباد کراچی میں ٹریفک کے ایک ایسے ہی حادثے میں جاں بحق ہوئے تھے۔ابومعاویہ کودیکھ کرقرنِ اوّل کے مسلمانوں کی یادتازہ ہوتی تھی۔انھوں نے اس مادی دور میں اپنے تمام بچوں کودینی مدارس میں تعلیم دلوائی۔
یہ دونوں بھائی بڑی خوبیوں کے مالک اور اعلیٰ انسانی اوصاف سے متصف تھے۔اﷲ تعالیٰ ان کومغفرت وبخشش کی نعمتوں سے سرفراز فرمائے۔

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Behavior of Bacterial Isolates from Different Clinical Samples at Nishtar Hospital Multan

The pathogenic bacteria are getting resistant to antibiotics is significantly growing in the developing countries of the world including Pakistan. The present study was designed to find the basic study on resistance among the patients coming to the Nishtar Hospital, Multan. The study was carried out in the Department of Pathology, Nishtar Hospital, Multan. Total 387 clinical samples of urine, pus, high vaginal swab (HVS) and wound were surveyed for the existence of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. For these bacterial isolates, antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed. E. Coli was the most prevalent isolates followed by Staphylococcus aureusand Pseudomonas. E. Coli was predominated in urine, pus, HVS and wound specimens. Occurance of Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, Candida and Pseudomonas were 7.9 %, 3.9 %, 14.7 % and 1.4 % respectively among the clinical specimens. E. Coli shows highest resistance to Linezolid (98.3%) followed by Ceftrizone (90.8%), Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim (85%), Moxifloxacin (82.5%). High frequency of resistance specifies that there is an unremitting requirement of surveillance of resistance behaviour of antimicrobial agents in our study is to investigate the trend of this problem.

Effects of Nuisance Dust Total on Health of Workers of Textile Sector in Punjab Pakistan

This study focused to evaluate effect of cotton dust and PM2.5 on health of workers of textile sector in Punjab. Prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) was estimated in this study. This cross sectional study has also shown reduced pulmonary function in association to workplace exposure to cotton dust and PM2.5. Subjects with cough, phlegm, chronic bronchitis and occupation related wheeze had significantly impaired pulmonary function indices. This study also indicates additive effect of smoking with cotton dust and PM2.5 resulting into decline in lung function indices. Workers in stitching section, with prolonged duration of work, were more inclined to developing one or more of the respiratory disorders. In order to control occupational pulmonary diseases in the textile sector, effective control measures pertaining to dusts, repeated awareness of workers and staff on the issues of workplace hazards, and continuous health surveillance and monitoring programs is suggested and needed to be implemented. The utilization of proper personal protective equipment for workers at workplace is mandatory. Ventilation in the workplace, capacity building about workplace hazards and periodic medical check-up of workers in cotton processing facilities are effective tools to workplace exposure.
