In Salt Range and Trans Indus Range (Pakistan), field observations in Jutana Formation (Cambrian) exhibits two main sub-divisions which includes; (i) the lower oolitic-pisolitic unit and (ii) upper massive dolomite unit. In the lower unit, dolostones containing ooids/pisoids and faunal assemblages are interlayered with whitish grey sandstone with distinct depositional sedimentary features (i.e., ripple marks, trough-, herring bone- and hummocky-cross bedding). The upper dolostone unit consists of thick bedded to massive dolostone. These two units are separated by shale beds. Detail microscopic studies identified three distinct diagenetic phases containing; (i) fine crystalline dolomite (Dol. I), (ii) medium-coarse crystalline dolomite (Dol. II) and, (iii) fracture associated, coarse crystalline dolomite (Dol. III). Mineralogical analysis, which include X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis identified the concentration of dolomite and quartz mainly in the studied formation. Based on stoichiometric calculations, dolomites of Jutana Formation are classified into two groups; fine crystalline dolomite (Dol. I), exhibits non-stoichiometric low ordered dolomites, while medium-coarse crystalline dolomite (Dol. II) and, (iii) fracture associated, coarse crystalline dolomite (Dol. III) are identified as stoichiometric ordered dolomites. Major and trace elemental studies exhibits high concentrations of Sr and Na with comparatively low values of Mn and Fe for Dol. I, whereas Dol. II and Dol. III represents high Mn and Fe contents with low Na and Sr concentration. Stable isotopes ( 18O) signatures denotes low values in fine crystalline dolomite (Dol. I). Furthermore, medium-coarse crystalline dolomite (Dol. II) and, (iii) fracture associated, coarse crystalline dolomite (Dol. III) represents high and more depleted values respectively. In addition, 13C values of fine crystalline dolomite (Dol. I), mediumcoarse crystalline dolomite (Dol. II) and fracture associated, coarse crystalline dolomite (Dol. III) lie in the range of marine signatures. Results of strontium isotopes lies above its original marine signatures indicating interaction with radiogenic lithologies. Magnesium 25 26Mg) result elucidates altered marine (mixing zone) and hydrothermal dolomitization origin for these dolomites. In conclusion, above mentioned studies demonstrated that dolomites of Jutana Formation are formed in multi stages i.e. initially in mixing zone near surface shallow condition followed by hydrothermal dolomitization in intermediate to deep burial environmental setting in later stages.

محمود تيمور كمصلح اجتماعي

Born in 1894 in "Darb Sadah" of Cairo: Mehmood Taimur has attained a distinguished place in the world of literature. Besides writing literature, he has also written many essays/articles. He has highlighted social problems in his social essays and has become a social reformer. He has pinpointed the following social issues in these essays: (1) He has exposed the social ills like class distinction: sexual deprivation destitute and ignorance. (2) He has also acquainted the people about the causes of polygamy and divorce in the light of Shariat and rejects the contention with the solid argument that woman is a weak creature subjected to all kind of wrong treatment. Every person has a right to lead a peaceful life in this world and no one has the right to deprive him of this privilege except owing to some Islamic law. Most of the people were unaware of the rights of woman granted by Islam or they were not accepting them but Mehmood Taimur has presented all those rights in a beautiful way before society that is why on reading his social essays man reaches the conclusion that he was a social reformer.

The Impact of Social Studies Visiting Teacher Programme on Teachers Perceptions and Classroom Practices

The research study deals with the effect Social Studies Visiting Teachers (VT) programme on two VTs' classroom practices. Both were female and working in two private schools of Karachi. Moreover, headteachers, VTs' colleagues and the course tutors also participated in the study. The data was triangulated through interviews, classroom observations and document analysis. The major finding of study was that Social Studies VT programme made some impact on changing VTs' perceptions, attitude and classroom practices. Both VTs began to consider Social Studies as global and interesting subject and students as active learners. VTs also learnt how to develop skills related to tolerance, patience and confidence required to become effective teachers. Social Studies VT programme also substantially enhanced VTs' knowledge about instructional strategies, however, they seemed to have acquired partial understanding of some of the instructional strategies. Therefore, some strategies were hardly used in their classroom practices. Both VTs also shared some of the major concerns and challenges about innovations. Some facilitating and hindering factors such as fixed syllabus, examination system, rote learning, inadequate support from headteachers, and inadequate feedback from VT programme tutors etc. These factors could be put into three main categories i.e. programme, personal, and contextual. Both VTs also felt the need for the refresher and the follow-up programme to strengthen and reinforce their newly acquired knowledge and practices. The recommendation of the study will help IED to improve the VT programme that can contribute to develop teachers as reflective practitioners.
