The objective of this work was to investigate optical diffuse reflectance (ODR) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) being an emerging technology in optical diagnostics. Both methodologies were implemented for measurements of optical properties and glucose levels respectively in biological tissues. The reduced scattering, absorption and total attenuation coefficients for rat‟s liver have been determined by using Mie-scattering theory, diffusion approximation equation and linear fitting to the normalized intensity. These optical parameters for normal and thermally coagulated chicken liver in the near infra red region were obtained by using Kubelka Munk Model (KMM) in correlation with diffuse reflectance. The results show a significant increase in these parameters after coagulation. Monte Carlo simulation for these results validates the experimental measurements. These optical parameters provide a base for extension of the work towards glucose monitoring in blood present in the blood vessels underneath skin. A subclass of OCT called swept source, SS-OCT was used in measurements of glucose levels in liquid phantoms and blood by analyzing temporal dynamics of scattered light. Brownian motion of the scatterers (polystyrene microspheres in phantoms and red blood cells in blood) is affected due to presence of glucose as measured by SS-OCT. The temporal analysis of Brownian motion statistics yielded the translational diffusion coefficient and viscosity of non-flowing and flowing fluids that were observed in good agreement with literature. The increase in glucose concentrations deformed red blood cells and caused rouleaux formations that were confirmed by imaging with inverted microscopes. The OCT method was successfully implemented for in vivo case scenario to obtain the translational diffusion coefficient in blood vessels. In case of in vivo application, speckle variance (SV)-OCT was used to obtain three dimensional high resolution cross- sectional imaging of blood vessels. This may be used to observe the blood viscosity modulation based changes in blood vasculatures. OCT probes for percutaneous coronary microstructures imaging have been discussed to be used for SV-OCT or Doppler OCT. This phantom and blood OCT study demonstrates the technique‟s ability to detect and quantify glucose presence in non-flowing and flowing liquid suspensions, and potential for in-vivo applications.

Purpose of the study was to reflect great contributions of Dar ul Uloom Deouband. After the end of Independence War 1857, three factors endangered the Muslims of India religiously and educationally. Firstly, the Christian missionaries who thought that after the political downfall Muslims would convert themselves to Christianity. Secondly, the missionaries were proclaiming blasphemy about Islam and the Holy Prophet Muhammad Sallalaho Alaha Wasalam. In this regard, William Mure wrote a notorious blasphemous book about which Sir Syed said, “Alas! We like to die.” Thirdly, in these circumstances the doubts of Muslims were increasing that Muslim may not be converted to Christianity but it may create hatred from Islamic ideology.  Just to cope up with these dangers, various educational movements came into being; one of them is Deouband Movement. As a result of the efforts by Dar ul Uloom Deouband, Muslims were able to save their Din and eman.

Bioactive Potential of Fungus Induced Silybum Marianum Seedlings and Isolation of Antimicrobial Genes

Living organisms are equipped with sophisticated mechanisms to minimize the hazards and threats offered by the nature and maximize their survival potential against strain imposed by environmental forces. Growing concern about the frequent use of analogous antibiotics leading to resistant pathogens and their harmful impacts on crop yield worldwide has fuelled an explosion in the field of plant defense response by coupling biotechnology to the medicinal plants. Increasing knowledge of the mechanisms underlying plant defense response has also encouraged the idea that sensitizing a plant towards microbial elicitors increases plant resistance to the potential pathogens. Considering the same thought of knowledge, this study was entailed to examine the bioactive potential of Silybum marianum under control and fungal stress. Peptide based multidimensional studied of the plant with reference to antimicrobial, antioxidant, antitumor, cytotoxic and mutagenic potential were undertaken. A time course study of the extracts prepared under fungal stress strongly revealed the increased accumulation of proteins/peptides upto 8 hours post inoculation with a drop in the expression level at subsequent hours. Encouraging results regarding antibacterial potential towards gram negative species and highly significant antifungal potential were also observed. In addition to antimicrobial potential, plant also showed beneficial traits as antitumor and nonmutagenic against Agrobacterium tumefaciens and human cell lines respectively. As far as antioxidant and cytotoxic potential is concerned, all the extracts had excellent antioxidant capacity whereas among all, 8 h control and its treated time points showed slight cytotoxicity. Rewarding bioactive potential of Silybum marianum eventually led to the identification of peptides involved in cellular metabolism, plant growth and development, signal transduction and exclusively to the peptides involved in defense response. Antimicrobial gene isolation with subsequent cloning and heterologous expression has proved substantial pharmaceutical importance of the plant which may open novel avenues for biotechnological applications in agriculture.
