Field experiments were conducted during 2006 and 2007 in Peshawar, using open pollinated maize variety “Azam” in RCB design having 3 factors viz., tillage, maize populations and mulches with split-split plot arrangements. Tillage levels (zero and conventional) were assigned to the main plots, populations (90000, 60000 and 30000 plants ha -1 ) to the sub-plots and four types of mulches (weeds mulch, black plastic mulch, white plastic mulch and mungbean as living mulch), a hand weeding and a weedy check were allotted to sub-sub plots, respectively. Data were recorded on days to tasseling, days to silking, leaf area of maize plant -1 (cm 2 ), leaf area index, plant height (cm), fresh weed biomass (kg ha -1 ), weed species composition, days to maturity, biological yield (kg ha -1 ), number of grains cob -1 , 1000-grain weight (g), grain yield (kg ha -1 ), harvest index, and Cost-Benefit Ratio (CBR). Crop yield was not affected significantly by the years, whereas all other factors affected the maize yield. With zero-tillage the yield of maize was 2271 kg ha -1 , compared to 2429 kg ha -1 in conventional tillage. Similarly, increasing crop density (population) increased the yield; having 2055 kg ha -1 in 30000 plants ha -1 , 2412 kg ha -1 in 60000 plants ha -1 and 2483 kg ha -1 in 90000 plants ha -1 , respectively. However, number of grains cob -1 , biological yield, harvest index, and thousand-grain weight of individual plants were affected negatively with increasing plant population. Similarly, mulches, hand weeding and weedy check plots also affected the yield and yield components of maize. Significantly higher grain yield of 2863 kg ha -1 was recorded in the hand weeding as compared to weedy check (1422 kg ha -1 ) and statistically at par with black plastic mulch (2813 kg ha -1 ), followed by weeds mulch (2460 kg ha -1 ), white plastic (2398 kg ha -1 ) and living mulch (2145 kg ha -1 ), respectively. Zero tillage resulted in maximum fresh weed biomass of 183 kg ha -1 as compared to 165 kg ha -1 in the conventional tillage. While lesser weed biomass (158 kg ha -1 ) was recorded in the highest population of 690000 plants ha -1 as compared to 60000 plants ha -1 (168 kg ha -1 ) and 30000 plants ha -1 (196 kg ha -1 ), respectively. Less fresh weed biomass was recorded in the hand weeding plots (112 kg ha -1 ) and statistically at par with black plastic mulch (120 kg ha -1 ), followed by weeds mulch (164 kg ha -1 ), white plastic mulch (191 kg ha -1 ) and living mulch (195 kg ha -1 ) as compared to weedy check (260 kg ha -1 ). Number of weeds species was higher (62 %) in zero tillage than conventional tillage (58 %). Similarly, higher plant populations (90000 plants ha -1 and 60000 plants ha -1 ) had 58 % weed species each as compared to 63 % in the lower plant population (30000 plants ha -1 ). In hand weeding fewer weeds species (38 %) were reported, followed by black plastic (51 %), weeds mulch (58 %), living mulch (63 %) and white plastic (64 %), respectively, as compared to 84 % in the weedy check. Based on two year study it is suggested that even if tillage options and plant populations are a part of the weed management program, it should not be used as a sole management tool; instead it should be integrated and supplemented with other control methods, like mulches, hand weeding and/or herbicides.

بین المذاہب ہم آہنگی میں حائل رکاوٹوں کا جائزہ

In contemporary world several efforts have been made to restore the global peace, harmony and co-existence, and still the struggles continue but in vain. There are some serious problems to be addressed in the first phase. Some of these problems, for interfaith harmony and co-existence are associated with political and economical imbalance or injustice, while some of these are related to social and collective values at the world level, particularly in the Muslim society. In the past, political and economic motives were responsible for wars. It is predicted that in future the situation will remain the same. However Religious extremism and fundamentalism are just slogans of the western world for covring up real economic intentions. Western world particularly Americans promote wars for achievement of economic gains. This article focuses on the real causes of terrorisim, which is threatening our globe. Moreover it also suggests how to control these issues and help in the restoration of peace and interfaith harmony. The economic, political and social causes have been highlighted in detail. The big powers while talking of helping the developing countries want in reality to exploit economically those countries.

Evaluation of Organochlorine and Polychlorinated Biphenyl Residues in the Blood / Serum Samples of Cancer Patients With Reference to the Assessment of Health Risk of Karachi People Due to Environmental Pollutants

The present study was conducted for the comparative evaluation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs) in the serum samples of diagnosed cancer patients and healthy humans of Karachi. Impact of these chemicals on the serum cell free DNA (cf-DNA), Cholesterol, Alkaline Phosphatase and Total Protein contents was also ascertained in the studied cohort. This was a preliminary work on the role of PCBs and OCPs in the etiology of cancer in Pakistan. A random collection of fasting blood samples from diagnosed cancer patients having various malignancies and healthy humans was carried out with informed consent of the donors at various hospitals and health care centers of Karachi. Serum was separated within 2 hours of collection and was used for subsequent analysis. Analysis of PCBs and OCPs was carried out on Gas Chromatograph coupled with Electron Capture Detector. Serum cf-DNA was analyzed on NanoDrop Spectrophotometer while serum Cholesterol, ALP and Total Protein contents were analyzed on Roche/Hitachi diagnostic analyzers. Levels of the seven tested PCBs (PCB 28, PCB 52, PCB 101, PCB 138, PCB 153, PCB 180 and PCB 209) were significantly higher in the cancer group compared with the control group. PCBs were detected in 93.98 % of the cancer cases and 93.75 % of the normal subjects. Mean level of ΣPCBs was found significantly elevated in the cancer group (2.711 mg/kg) compared with the control group (0.536 mg/kg). PCB 52 was the most prevalent chemical with a mean level of 2.044 mg/kg in the cancer group and 0.134 mg/kg in the control group. It was observed that concentrations of PCBs increased linearly with the increasing age of the cancer patients. On the other hand, OCPs were detected in 97.59 % of the cancer cases and 93.75 % of the normal subjects. Mean concentration of total OCPs was found elevated in the cancer group (0.611 mg/kg) compared with the control group (0.321mg/kg). Endosulfan was the highest prevalent OCP with mean concentration of 0.214 mg/kg in the cancer group and 0.170 mg/kg in the control group. DDT metabolite - 4,4-DDE was found significantly elevated in the cancer group with a mean level of 0.131 mg/kg compared to the control group (0.020 mg/kg). Highest mean concentration of ΣPCBs was found in cases of the female genital system while highest mean of ΣOCPs was detected in the breast cancer cases. Significantly elevated level of cf-DNA was detected in the cancer group with a mean value of 5584.2 ng/μl compared with control group (1758.8 ng/μl). Detection of cf-DNA was 56.45 % in the cancer group and 36.84 % in the control group. Mean cholesterol level was found significantly diminished in the cancer group (116±22 mg/dl) compared with the control group (158.7±33 mg/dl). ALP activity was found elevated in the cancer cases with a mean level of 125±48 U/L compared with the normal counterparts (109±28 U/L). Mean total protein contents were found reduced in the cancer cases (6.2±0.58 g/dl) compared to normal subjects (7.2±1 g/dl). Cases having higher residues of PCBs and to some extent of OCPs has shown elevated concentrations of cf-DNA, comparatively higher levels of cholesterol and ALP and reduced total protein contents. In light of the obtained results, it has concluded that PCBs and OCPs are positively associated with the etiology of cancer. Moreover, PCBs and OCPs adversely affect other biological parameters of the body which may ultimately result into various cancers in humans.
