In this PhD thesis the pharmaceutical suitability study of bentonite, the most important clay with wide spread industrial applications, is carried out. Bentonite is an exciting and truly amazing natural material varies in composition and texture from place to place. Hence, not equally well in performance for its specific industrial uses. They are mainly composed of a montmorillonite and other minor impurities that give them a unique ―fingerprint‖. The amount of pure montmorillonite in bentonite is key to its purity and performance. Bentonite can be considered as raw pharmaceutical materials that once properly identified, evaluated and/or modified to fulfil regulatory pharmacopoeial requirements and mineral purity. No such work has been done on Pakistani bentonite and no published data is available. In this work, the mineralogical, microbiological, geochemical and physicochemical studies of raw samples collected from three Pakistani mining sites located at Shagai (district Karak), Dag Ismial Khel (district Nowshera) and Chandan Garhi (district Peshawar) is carried out. The bentonites sample collected were purified by three different methods i.e. simple sedimentation using sodium hexametaphosphate as a dispersing agent in Method-I, classical NaCl treatment followed by sedimentation in method-II and activation by Na2CO3 at various ratio (2, 3, 5, 8 g Na2 CO3/100 g bentonite) followed by sedimentation technique in Method-III. The raw samples and the samples purified by three methods mentioned above, were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), N2 Adsorption-desorption Isotherm at Temperature 77.35K, Microbial test, CEC measurements, Pharmacopeial tests (i.e. pH, swelling capacity, gel formation) and laser granulometry. The test results obtained for raw and purified bentonite from each site were compared among them as well as with others. The mineralogical and chemical composition study revealed that all the samples from the three sites were of high quality bentonite, containing mainly Ca +2- vi montmorillonite with minor contents of illite and quartz. In addition, kaolinite was found in Karak, albite in Peshawar and Nowshera bentonite in small quantity. The swelling volume (apperent volume of 2g clay/100ml of distilled water) of all the three raw bentonite were in the range of 5mL to 7mL which is less than pharmacopeias requirements i.e. ≥ 20 mL. The gel formation value (4mL) of Peshawar bentonite also failed to comply with the pharmacopeias requirement (£2mL). All the purified samples were found free of quartz impurities as confirmed by XRD. The swelling, gelling and other properties were also improved by the purification process. The XRD and CEC tests confirmed the conversion of raw bentonite to sodium bentonite by 5% Na2CO3 for Karak and Nowshera while that of Peshawar by 3% Na2CO3. Moreover, XRD, XRF and TGA studies also testify the conversion of calcium bentonite to Sodium form by method-II. The results for purified samples from the three sites are in conformity with major pharmacopeial requirement of advanced countries for bentonite, hence Pakistani bentonite in purified can be designated as value added pharmaceutical raw material. The comparative study of purified samples revealed its variation in properties quantitatively, which make them important for specific pharmaceutical uses. The results of samples purified by three different methods are also varying from each other. All the studied bentonites in purified form could be used as suspending agent for both oral and topical application but the sample obtained by Method II and III could be preferred because of its excellent swelling capacity and sedimentation volume. The high CEC, high surface area, small particle size and pore size distribution suggesting their use as a good adsorbent of drugs and a drug carrier in control release of medicine.

Radical Feminism and its Major Socio-Religious Impact a Critical Analysis from Islamic Perspective

Women’s rights and freedom is one of the most debated subjects and the flash point of contemporary world. Women maintain a significant place in the society catered to them not only by the modern world but also by religion. Yet, the clash between Islamic and western civilization is that they have defined different set of duties for them. Islam considers women an important participatory member of the society by assigning them inclusive role, specifying certain fields of work to them, given the vulnerability they might fall victim to. Contrarily, Western world allows women to opt any profession of their choice regardless of tangible threats they may encounter. Apparently, the modern approach seems more attractive and favorable, but actually this is not plausible from Islamic point of view. Intermingling, co-gathering and sexual attraction of male and female are creating serious difficulties and problems for both genders, especially for women. Women are currently running many movements for their security, rights and liberties under the umbrella of “Feminism”. Due to excess of freedom and lack of responsibility, a radical movement came into existence which was named as ‘Radical Feminism’. This feminist movement is affecting the unique status of women in the whole world, especially in the west. This study seeks to explore radical feminism and its major impact on socio-religious norms in addition to its critical analysis from an Islamic perspective. Analytical research methodology will be adopted in this study with qualitative cum quantitative approach. This study reveals that the radical feminism has some notorious impacts on ethical, social and religious norms of the society, with especial reference to Muslims. Thus, it is a dire need of time to encounter these impact and consequences in the light of legal and moral approaches.

Fabrication, Characterization and Structural Study of Ferrites of Technical Importance

Ferrites are widely used in power electronics applications where the frequency range is from KHz to MHz. No other alternative materials except ferrites are available at such high frequencies. The areas of magnetic nanoparticles and thin films lead to revolutionary new approaches in basic and advanced magnetism, and are more effective in the field of high density storage media. The main objective of the present study was to produce single phase ferrites in the form of bulk, nano and thin films with improved structural, electrical and magnetic properties. This thesis examines the issue encountered in the growth, structural, microstructural, electrical and magnetic properties of ferrites in the form of bulk, nanoparticles and thin films. Here the materials examined include Cu 0.5 Zn 0.5 Fe 2- x Al x O 4 (x=0.0 to 0.5) ferrites prepared with solid state reaction method, Co 0.5 Mn 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 (calcined at 500, 600, 700, 800, 900°C), Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 (x=0.0 to 0.5), Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5-x Ni x Fe 2 O 4 (x=0.0 to 0.5) ferrites prepared with sol-gel combustion method and Fe 3 O 4 thin films prepared with pulsed laser deposition technique. The effect of Al3+ on the structural, electrical and magnetic properties were investigated in Cu 0.5 Zn 0.5 Fe 2-x Al x O 4 (x=0.0 to 0.5) ferrites prepared with solid state reaction method. Single phase cubic spinel structure was revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis. For all the samples, crystallite size remained in the range of 25-30 nm. Lattice constants of all the samples decreased, whereas porosity increased with increasing Al+3 concentration due to the substitution of smaller Al3+ ion (0.51 Å) for large Fe3+ ion (0.64 Å). Due to non-magnetic trend of Al3+ concentrations for a magnetic element Fe3+ at the B-site gradually decreased the saturation magnetization. Al+3 has significant impact on the dielectric constant ( ε /), tangent of dielectric loss angle (tanδ) and dielectric loss factor ( ε //). The possible reason for the variation in dielectric properties has been understood on the basis of space charge polarization. Three series of ferrites Co 0.5 Mn 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 (calcined at 500, 600, 700, 800, 900°C), Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 (x=0.0 to 0.5), Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5-x Ni x Fe 2 O 4 (x=0.0 to 0.5) were prepared by sol-gel combustion method. In Co 0.5 Mn 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 ferrites, crystallite size was determined with Scherrer’s formula. Crystallite size increases with calcination temperature but coercivity decreases. The decrease in coercivity at larger crystallite size can be attributed to domain walls. Single phase nanocrystalline Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 (x=0.0 to 0.5) ferrites were successfully prepared at low temperature of 300°C using citric acid as a fuel and nitrates as oxidants by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and room temperature vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) studies have been carried out in order to understand the structural and magnetic properties as a function of zinc concentration. The variations of observed lattice parameter and crystallite size have been explained by considering the larger ionic radius of zinc. The coercivity decreases as the crystallite size increases, attaining a minimum value of 46.32 Oe. This decrease at larger crystallite size could be due to three reasons. First, the crossover of single domain to multiphase domain, second combined effect of surface and surface anisotropy, third migration of Fe+3 ions from A to B-site. Another series of single phase nano-crystalline Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5- x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 (x=0.0 to 0.5) ferrites were successfully synthesized by combustion method at a temperature as low as 300°C. The presence of Ni2+ ions did not show a consistent trend in diffraction peaks shifting to either lower or higher angles. It was observed that with increasing nickel concentration, saturation magnetization (M s ) increased but coercivity (H c ) decreased which could be attributed to the substitution of soft ferromagnetic Ni2+ ions in place of diamagnetic Cu2+ ions. The minimum value of coercivity (87.20 Oe) was observed for the composition Mn 0.5 Ni 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 . Fe 3 O 4 thin films were deposited on Si(100) substrates with pulsed laser deposition technique. First we studied the effect of annealing and deposition temperature, and second the effect of annealing time of 30, 60 and 90 minutes on the structural and magnetic properties of Fe 3 O 4 thin films. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometery and vibrating sample magnetometry were used to find the film thickness, Fe 3 O 4 phase and magnetic properties respectively. We demonstrate optimized deposition and annealing condition for an enhanced magnetization of 854 emu/cc that is very high as compared to the bulk sample. Effect of annealing time on Fe 3 O 4 thin films were studied by X-ray diffractometer and vibrating sample magnetometer. Single phase [111] oriented Fe 3 O 4 thin films independent of substrate orientation was obtained after ninety minutes annealing. This preferred [111] oriented growth was explained on the basis of the achievement of a thermodynamic stable state.
