Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) being an important vegetable crop is cultivated worldwide. Several diseases affect its production among which pathogenic fungi especially Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici inciting wilt disease in tomatoes is the most challenging one. Management strategies to deal this disease mostly rely on expensive inputs which not only raise economic concerns but also environmental safety issues due to toxicity caused by agrochemicals. So there is dire need of some control measures that show tendency to suppress this disease with less reliance on chemicals and are ecofriendly. Biocontrol of plant diseases through induction of systemic resistance is the best substitute to chemicals in crop protection measures. Different biotic and abiotic elicitors can trigger the plant for induced resistance. Present study was designed to explore the potential of indigenous Pseudomonas strains in inducing systemic resistance in tomato against Fusarium wilt. Concentration was confined on searching of potential ISR determinant/s from the competent bacterial strain/s involved in activating defence system of the host plant. · First, seven strains of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) were isolated and were tested for their virulence against fifteen varieties of tomato. On the basis of virulence Fusarium strain “FOLc” was selected whereas on the basis of susceptibility two tomato varieties Rio-Grande (71.59%) and Nagina (70.84%) were selected for further experimentation. · Thirty one nonpathogenic indigenous strains of Pseudomonas were isolated from healthy tomato plants growing in different areas of Lahore, Pakistan. These bacterial strains were subjected to split root experiment under greenhouse conditions for screening. Eight Pseudomonas strains were selected that reduced disease index significantly as compared to the pathogen control. Among these eight the two most efficient strains were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PM12) and P. putida (PM29) that provided ≥ 75% reduction in disease index. Selected eight bacterial strains were again subjected to split root experiment to document the changes in defense related biochemicals like phenolics and defense related enzymes. It was found that Pseudomonas VI aeruginosa (PM12) and P. putida (PM29) significantly increased these biochemicals as compared to the control plants. · Next study was conducted to check the induced systemic resistance on molecular and histological grounds. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PM12) and P. putida (PM29) showed high expression profiles of Pathogenesis related (PR) genes and histological defence barriers like phenolics, peroxidases and lignin in stem and root tissues. · Field trials of the top most bacterial strains viz; Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PM12) and P. putida (PM29) were conducted using sugarcane press mud based formulation. Both the strains applied as consortia reduced disease index to 69.89% and 75.40% in variety Rio-Grande during the years 2013 and 2014 respectively along with increase in yield. · Study regarding searching of potential ISR determinant/s from the most competent strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PM12) showed that extracellular metabolites were active in reducing the disease then GC/MS analysis confirmed the involvement of 3-hydroxy, 5-methoxy benezene methanol (HMB) in triggering ISR against the pathogen. · Total metabolome analysis of tomato plants through GC/MS revealed induced metabolic transitions in plants under the influence of ISR elicitor, HMB. Metabolites involved in primary metabolism, phenylpropenoid pathway, signaling pathway and tricarboxylic acid cycle were found significantly increased by the elicitor compound in order to activate the defence machinery of the plant. · To check the results statistically all the data was subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). This study concludes that Pseudomonas aeruginosa PM12 has the ability to produce elicitors that can induce systemic resistance in crop plants like tomato against Fusarium wilt. Application of this bacterium or its elicitor compounds to mitigate Fusarium wilt can provide a better solution to the agro-environmental challenges.

The bond of education and character education is like that of body and soul. In the comprehensive process of Islamic character building, education is an integral part. Character is the provision for life journey where as education is the light on the path. The recognition of distinct objectives of education and trenchant targets of character education is necessary to solve the crisis of character faced by contemporary world. Education is a lightening experience to develop the skills and awareness whereas character education helps the individual to be sincere with himself, obedient to his Lord, and compliant with the moral values which is the outcome of character education. The curricula of education, no matter how powerful and evolved may it be, need to be translated into behavior. Therefore, a role model is needed to achieve educational goals. The work of the prophet was characterized with deep insight, strong determination, firmness, honesty. These virtuous qualities caused to enlighten hearts with the right faith. Character cannot be built thorough ease and quiet, it is a process built upon a philosophy and laws, which springs from the moral values followed by the society. Islamic character education evolved from the infallible sources of Islamic Sharia: The Qur’an and Sunnah of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (S. A. W) who formed the characters of his noble companions (R. A) in best manner and equipped their generation with everything they needed to lead a successful life in this world and in hereafter. This paper elucidates the connection between education and character education, and sheds light upon the importance of role model in bringing the change as well as covers the major restraints that shackle the process of education and character education.

A Study of Understanding of Three Dimensional Diagrams by Children of 6 – 8 Years

No one can ignore the importance of diagrams in the textbooks specifically for the children. In the present era of technology, the importance of diagrams has increased many folds due to presentation of diagrams in different dimensions like Three Dimensional (3 – D) diagrams. No worthwhile study has so far been conducted in Pakistan regarding any role of 3 – D diagrams in learning. The present study aims to determine the age categories of the Pakistani children / students of year 6 – 8 from which they understand 3 – D diagrams to minimum and maximum extent. So that, textbook writers, developers and publishers could be suggested for introducing 3 – D diagrams in the textbooks at a very particular age in near future for the children of year 6 - 8. In-time introduction of 3 – D diagrams can make the Pakistani children more compatible at national and international level in the present scenario. For this purpose a perception test was designed for Pakistani children on the basis of a model given by Nicholson and Seddon (1977). The test was administered twice for pilot study on the advice of the panel of experts. The finalized Urdu version of the test was administered to 7212 students of class II, III, and IV in 15 tehsils of five districts of Punjab after motivating the students by administering a standardized non-verbal test of Raven (1989). Out of 7212 students 1996 only were found within the prescribed range of the age of year 6 – 8. The selected students (1996) were classified into 13 different categories with respect to their age, sex, residential area, parental education and income. Each age-year was further distributed on month-wise bases. The scores obtained by the students in the perception test were interpreted as corresponding level of understanding of 3 – D diagrams after computing month-wise average scores of each category of year – 6, 7, and 8. Month-wise averages were also computed on sex-wise and students-wise bases (including both sexes i.e. boys + girls). This pattern of analysis was maintained for all types of distribution of the sample, such as residential area-wise, parental education and income-wise. Moreover, overall averages were also computed for all students, each year, and each sex and for all types of distribution of the sample. Significant or insignificant difference between the means of different distributions was also determined. Such as, significant difference in understanding was recorded between rural boys and rural girls. The statistical analysis pointed out a low level understanding of 3 – D diagrams due to minimum average scores obtained by all the three age groups which reflected that the perception test was slightly difficult test. A similar pattern of better but gradual increased understanding was recorded in overall average scores obtained by the students xvii of year 6 – 8. Similar pattern of slightly better understanding of 3 – D diagrams was also reflected due to relatively higher scores obtained by the sampled rural students from year 6 – 8. Gradually decreasing overall average scores reflected a gradually decreasing trend of low understanding by all the three age groups of urban boys. Age-wise a gradual increase in understanding of 3-D diagrams was also recorded among sampled students, boys and girls of year 6 and 7. Average scores of boys and girls of year 6 and 7 reflected that understanding of girls about 3 – D diagrams was comparatively better than the understanding of the boys of the same age groups. Overall average scores of the students from uneducated families reflected slightly better understanding than that of the students from educated families. Overall average scores of the students from above average income group families reflected slightly better understanding than the students from below average income group families. Z test highlighted significant differences between the mean scores of rural boys vs. rural girls, urban boys vs. urban girls of year – 7; and total boys vs. total girls. The results of item analysis proved the effectiveness of all distracters of the perception test. Only two items were not differentiating between high achievers and low achievers. All of the items need to be re-arranged logically with respect to the vales of ‘p’, few difficult items can be replaced with easy items age-wise allocated items be administered for standardization. After rearranging the sequence of the items, two most difficult and two easiest items should be dropped and rest of the thirty six items should be classified into three age groups equally. First twelve items should be allocated for year – 6 next twelve for year – 7, and last twelve for year – 8.
