The present study was aimed to isolate and characterize microorganisms capable of degrading polyester-based biodegradable plastics under natural soil conditions. Two fungi, designated as strain SS2 and S45, were isolated from soil that could degrade various polyesters of natural as well as synthetic origin, both in emulsion as well as film form. Strain SS2 and S45 were identified through 18S rRNA gene sequencing and found closely similar to Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus sp., having 100 and 99% similarity with Penicillium oxalicum and Aspergillus fumigatus, respectively. P. oxalicum SS2 could efficiently degrade polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate (PHBV) emulsion as well as films in liquid medium within 36-48 hrs. The fungus showed maximum growth and degradation at 30°C that represented its mesophilic nature. Furthermore, the role of P. oxalicum SS2 in degradation of polyester films in soil environment was evaluated by soil burial experiment in lab-built microcosms where the fungus degraded PHB and PHBV films in 7 days. Aspergillus fumigatus strain S45 showed degradation potential against poly(caprolactone) (PCL) and polyurethane (PU). Bio-augmentation of the fungus in soil accelerated biodegradation of PCL film. While measurement of weight loss and evolution of CO2 showed breakdown of PU film upon inoculation with S45. The biodegradation of polyesters was further confirmed through various qualitative assays such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Aspergillus fumigatus strain S45 was found to show esterase activity during biodegradation of PU. This study demonstrated soil as a reservoir for polyester-degrading microorganisms which could be utilized for the development of novel waste management strategies.

A Low-Cost Socio-Culturally Situated Mental Health Intervention for the Well-Being of Pakistani Young Women: A Reflective Narrative

The paper sets out to briefly discuss mental health challenges faced by Pakistani young women, and brings out an innovative solution through a multidisciplinary approach, i.e, socio-culturally situated low-cost digital intervention. The paper begins with an overview of mental health issues. It then sheds light on the scope of open education and innovation in Pakistan. Finally, through a reflective narrative approach, I have explored my personal journey of becoming a networked practitioner, and how an open educational website emerged to intersect the needs of Pakistani young women. Data is gathered from 137 reflective diary entries and analyzed through narrative analysis approach. Digital literacy and open networking practices have shaped my digital identity and allowed me to embrace open scholarship. Networking and collaboration have helped me filtering Open Educational Resources (OERs). Further, collaborative activities encouraged participants to become the co-producers of resource development. Overall, an adaptation of low-cost technology has potentially helped participants to reflect and embrace their personal identities.

The Role of Women Parliamentarians in Pakistani Politics 1970-1988

The general misconception about women politicians is that they were just silent spectators and very few women participated in the parliament, raising voice on women issues only. Those women who became members of the National Assembly on reserved seats were mere rubber stamps in the hands of their male counterparts, having neither knowledge nor experience to make any qualitative contribution. In addition, the books related to political history of the country also never ever mentioned the role of women parliamentarians in the politics of Pakistan. There is a plethora of material related to women parliamentarians’ contribution in Pakistani politics in the libraries of the parliament of Pakistan in the form of Official Reports of National Assembly and Senate Debates which is necessitated to be explored. The present study has been done to explore and bring to the knowledge of one and all, the performance of the women parliamentarians in Pakistani politics particularly from 1970 to 1988 along with the background which delves into the political contribution of women during the freedom movement, Pakistan movement and their role in the politics of Pakistan till 1970. This study explores how women have been performing an indispensable role more than proportionate to their numbers in the national legislature of Pakistan on both general and reserved seats since 1947, particularly during 1970-1988. They had taken up a broad spectrum of issues and demonstrated their awareness of matters in discussion and debates. The performance of some women parliamentarians was beyond comparison. It is because of their countless efforts and struggle that the Pakistani women got jobs in almost all the spheres of life and more space in the parliament of Pakistan.
