This research work includes the exploration of ethnobotanical, pharmacognostic, physicochemical and pharmacological aspects of Monotheca buxifolia (Falc.) A. DC. of the dicotyledonous family, Sapotaceae. It is locally known as ―Gurgura‖ and is used as a source of fuel, fodder, agricultural tools and for Honey bee farming in various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Medicinally the fruits are used as a digestive, purgative, laxative, in urinary disorders, diuretic, vermifuge, refrigerant, tonic and in antiseptic pastes. Morphological, anatomical and organoleptic features of different parts of the plant (fruit, seed, leaf, stem bark and root bark) were worked out in detail. M. buxifolia had a palisade ratio of 6.75± 0.5, vein islets number 37.4±2.88 per mm2, vein termination number 35.4±1.8 per mm2, stomatal number of lower epidermis 77.4±3.57 per mm2 and 7.75± 0.97 on upper epidermis while stomatal index of lower epidermis 10.53±0.40 and upper epidermis 5.39±0.33. Stomata on the upper epidermis were of actinocytic type while on the lower epidermis actinostephanocytic type of stomata were present. The powder drug studies of the fruit, seed, leaf, stem bark and root bark showed characteristic fragments. The qualitative preliminary phytochemical screening of different parts of M. buxifolia gave positive indications for presence of aminoacids, proteins, reducing and nonreducing sugars, fixed oils, fats, glycosides, alkaloids, tannins, phenolic compounds, saponins, anthocyanins, Triterpenoids, phytosterols and Flavonoids in both aqueous and methanol extracts. The florescence behaviour, moisture contents and ash values were also worked out. The fruit pulp, seeds and leaves contained 8.33%, 10.62% and 0.56% fixed oil respectively. Linolenic acid, Oleic acid, Palmitic acid, Myristic acid and Stearic acid were the major component fatty acids. Elemental analysis of various parts of M. buxifolia revealed presence of good quantities of Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Trace elements were found to be within the WHO permissible limits except for lead (22.48±0.33) and Cobalt (10.7±0.01), which exceeded the permissible limits in barks of stem and root respectively. The methanol extract of M. buxifolia fruit and leaf were tested at 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg body weight doses for any toxicological effects. They were found to be safe at all the tested doses. The methanol extracts of different parts of M. buxifolia were evaluated for their cytotoxic potentials against Artemia salina larvae. The fruit pulp had no visible cytotoxic effects. The seed extract produced most significant cytotoxic effects, giving an LD50 value of 4.668 (µg/ml) followed by root bark (31.265 µg/ml), leaf (97.59 µg/ml) and stem bark (199.65 µg/ml). In the in vitro spasmolytic bioassay the crude methanol extract of M. buxifolia fruit produced a significant inhibition of jejunal contractions through cholinergic pathway and voltage gated calcium channel blockade, similar to verapomil. The 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg doses of M. buxifolia fruit and leaf extracts produced significant antidiarrheal effects against Castor oil induced diarrhea in mice, in a dose dependent manner. The fruit extract caused 38.8%, 61% and 61.2% while the leaf extract caused 67.2%, 74.6% and 91.1% inhibition of faecal droppings, respectively, as compared to negative control. The 250 and 500 mg/kg doses of crude methanol extract of M. buxifolia fruit produced remarkable hepatoprotective activity against paracetamol induced hepatic damage in mice. the post-damage treatment was more effective and comparable to the standard hepatoprotective drug, Silymarin. The extract significantly (P ≤ 0.05) lowered the elevated levels of biochemical markers (Total Bilirubin, Direct Bilirubin, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase and Gamma‐GT) towards normal. Histopathological studies further confirmed hepatoprotective potentials of the plant. This study provides useful pharmacognostic standards for M. buxifolia and elaborates its pharmacological significance.

دو شنبہ، ۱۸؍ شعبان المعظم ۱۴۲۲؁ھ مطابق ۵؍ نومبر ۲۰۰۱؁ء کی صبح کو عربی زبان و ادب کے استاد، تاریخ اسلام کے ماہر اور ممتاز مصنف ڈاکٹر خورشید احمد فارق کوئی ۸۵ سال کی عمر میں طویل علالت کے بعد دہلی میں وفات پاگئے۔
وہ ۱۹۱۶؁ء میں بریلی میں پیدا ہوئے۔ فارسی و عربی کی متد اول کتابیں انھوں نے گھر پر اپنے والد ماجد سے پڑھیں۔ کالج کی تعلیم انھوں نے بریلی میں حاصل کی۔ ایم۔اے اور پی۔ایچ۔ڈی انھوں نے مسلم یونیورسٹی علی گڑھ سے کیا۔ ریسرچ کے دوران وہ شعبہ عربی میں کچھ کلاسیں بھی لیتے رہے۔ ۱۹۴۳؁ء کے اواخر میں وہ اینگلو عربک کالج دہلی میں لکچرر، ۱۹۵۳؁ء کے اواخر میں دہلی یونیورسٹی میں ریڈر مقرر ہوئے۔ اکتوبر ۱۹۵۶؁ء میں حکومت ہند کے ایک وظیفے پر ایک سال کے لیے وہ مصر گئے۔ وہاں دارلکتب المصریہ کے مخطوطات کے مطالعے کا انہیں اچھا موقع ملا۔ ریاض الرحمن خاں صاحب شروانی اور عبدالحلیم ندوی صاحب کو بھی اسی سال یہ وظیفہ ملا تھا۔ قاہرہ میں ان تینوں کا خوب ساتھ رہا۔ فروری ۱۹۶۹؁ء میں وہ دہلی یونیورسٹی میں پروفیسر اور صدر شعبہ مقرر ہوئے۔ جولائی ۱۹۸۵؁ء میں وہ متقاعد ہو کر علی گڑھ آگئے اور سر سید نگر میں اپنے تعمیر کردہ مکان ’’بانس کلی‘‘ میں مقیم ہوکر علمی و ادبی کاموں میں مصروف ہوگئے۔ آخر عمر میں وہ اپنے بچوں کے پاس دہلی چلے گئے تھے، وہیں ان کی وفات ہوئی۔ جامعہ ملیہ اسلامیہ کے قبرستان میں ان کی تدفین عمل میں آئی۔

Cardiovascular Effects of Nigella Sativa on Isolated Rabbit Heart and its Impact on Cardiac Remodeling

Background: Black Cumin/Nigella sativa (NS) which belongs to the botanical family of Ranunculaceae commonly grows in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Western Asia. Its prolonged use can produce physiological changes with or without affecting the architecture of different organs like the heart (cardiac remodeling). The data for the cardiovascular benefits of black cumin are not well-established scientifically. Objectives: To determine the direct cardiovascular effects of Nigella Sativa extract on heart rate, cardiac contractility (apical force), ECG, and coronary flow in the normal heart with and without cardiac remodeling. Methods: This experimental study was conducted on forty-two (42) rabbits. These rabbits were divided into seven groups, each comprising six animals (Group I-VI without cardiac remodeling and Group VII with cardiac remodeling). NS was given to these groups in different doses i.e, Group I (NS=10ug), Group II (NS=30ug), Group III (NS=100ug), Group IV (NS=300ug), Group V (NS=3000ug), Group VI (NS=10000ug) and VII (NS=300ug). Radnoti's working heart system was used to determine the effects of NS on heart rate, cardiac contractility (apical Force), ECG, and coronary flow in a normal heart with and without cardiac remodeling. The results were analyzed using SPSS version 28.   Results: Results of this study revealed negative chronotropic and positive inotropic effects without ECG changes in the normal heart and with ECG changes in the remodeled heart. Conclusions: Prolonged use of Nigella sativa can lead to disturbed ECG by affecting the conducting tissue.

Studies on Fish Species Specific Metals Bio- Accumulation Patterns in Relation to Water, Sediments and Plankton in the River Ravi

The toxicity of heavy metals, aluminium, arsenic, barium, chromium, nickel and zinc in the water, sediments, plankton and fish at the three main public fishing sites of the river Ravi, Shahdara bridge, Baloki headworks and Sidhnai barrage has been studied for one year. The water, sediments, plankton and fish samples were collected on monthly basis. Five fish of each species belonging to both major carps, Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhina mrigala and carnivore fish i.e. Rita rita, Mystus sperata and Wallago attu were sampled randomly for analyses. The concentrations of aluminium, arsenic, barium, chromium, nickel and zinc in the fish body organs, gills, liver, kidney, intestine, reproductive organs, skin, muscle, fins, scales, bones and fats were determined. The water physico-chemical variables, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, total alkalinity, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total nitrates, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chlorides and total ammonia were analyzed on monthly basis and their relationships with the uptake and accumulation of metals in water, bed sediments and planktonic biomass (dry weight) were established. In the river Ravi aquatic ecosystem the relative variability of metals followed the order: aluminium>zinc>nickel>chromium>arsenic>barium. Among the three public fishing sites, Sahahdara bridge had significantly higher metallic toxicity of water, sediments and planktonic biota attributed to the bulk discharges of untreated effluents, originated from adjacent industrial areas, discharged through various small tributaries , Mahmood Booti nulla, Hudiara nulla, Shad Bagh nulla, Farrukhabad nulla, Munshi Hospital nulla and Taj Company nulla. The metallic toxicity of both sediments and plankton, in the river Ravi, followed the order: aluminium>zinc>nickel>chromium>arsenic>barium. However, the toxicity of these metals fluctuated significantly at all the three sampling stations with season. Metallic toxicity of water at all the three sites was generally low but the contamination levels in both sediments and biota were significantly higher. Among the metals, aluminium and zinc concentrations in water, sediments and plankton were significantly higher. The toxicity of aluminium, zinc, nickel, chromium and arsenic in water showed variability that was dependent upon total alkalinity and pH of water while chromium toxicity showed inverse relationship with water temperature. The elevated levels of all metals in the river bed sediments beyond the permissible limits indicated the failure of detoxification ability of sediments in the river Ravi due to continuous influx of heavy metals discharged through various tributaries. The uptake and accumulation of all metals by the sediments and plankton were dependent positively and significantly upon metallic toxicity of water. However, metallic ion uptake by the plankton showed significantly direct dependence on the metallic toxicity of sediments. The fish at Shahdara bridge had significantly higher metals in their body organs than those collected from the both Baloki headworks and Sidhnai barrage. Significantly higher accumulation of metals were observed in fish liver, followed by that of kidney, gills, intestine, reproductive organs, skin, scales, fins, bones, muscles and fats. The significant enrichment of metals in fish body organs showed direct dependence on the metallic toxicity of water, sediments and plankton. All the organs of both herbi– and carnivorous fish species showed significantly variable accumulation of metals that followed the sequence: liver > kidney > gills > intestine > reproductive organs > scale > skin > fins > bones > muscles > fats. Fish liver and kidney showed significantly higher abilities for the accumulation of all metals while the same remained significantly lowest in fish muscle and fats. The health status of river Ravi at three main public fishing sites, Shahdara bridge, Baloki headworks and Sidhnai barrage, with respect to eco-toxicity of aluminium, arsenic, barium, chromium, nickel and zinc, was above the recommended standards of EPA (USA) and Pakistan. Based on the calculated individual contamination factors, the metallic toxicity was in the order of aluminium>zinc>nickel>chromium>arsenic>barium posing highest risk to the sustainability of river ecosystem. The risks associated with the consumption of fish, irrespective of the source of fish, are higher since the levels of aluminium, arsenic, barium, chromium, nickel and zinc in fish have been found above their respective EPA (USA) permissible limits. Therefore, potential of danger may become more severe in future depending upon the extent of industrial and domestic wastewater influx into the river Ravi due to man-made activities in the adjacent areas.
