In view of escalating awareness and demand for natural products, having antioxidants in the form of vegetables to get foods with medicinal properties, the research on natural antioxidants has achieved remarkable momentum. Daucus carota is among the emerging vegetables with high economic value, due to craving taste and health promoting attributes. It is extensively acknowledged that cultivar and genotype can affect the physico-chemical characteristics and biological activities in fruits and vegetables. The present project was designed to evaluate compositional variations in newly developed cultivars of carrot indigenous to Pakistan. Investigated cultivars proved to be good source of protein, carbohydrates, oil, crude fiber and minerals with significant (ρ < 0.05) variation. The investigated carrot cultivars showed considerable amounts of phenolic acids and carotenoids with remarkable total antioxidant activity, DPPH scavenging capacity, super radical scavenging capacity and hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity. The composition of individual phenolics and sugars compounds was determined using high performance chromatography (HPLC) with diode array and refractive index detectors, respectively. Among phenolic compounds, 5-caffeoylquinic acid was the major hydroxylcinnamic acid, ranging from 6.98 to 33.23 mg/100g of total phenolic compounds. The total amount of phenolic compounds in DCP cultivar was 54.62 mg/100g, where as the corresponding values in other cultivars ranged from 12.8 to 20.29 mg/100g. Maltose was the predominant sugar in all the seven cultivars of D. carota (1.886-2.463 g/100g), followed by fructose (1.103-2.09 g/100g), glucose (0.963-1.395g/100g). The concentration of maltodextrin and maltotriose ranged from 0.166-0.583 g/100g and 0.004-0.058g/100g respectively in all cultivars of D. carota. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the effect of consuming 250mL carrot juice for one month on cardiovascular risk markers, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood chemistry, blood cells, lipid profile and antioxidant status in industrial workers of different age groups. Drinking carrot juice showed positive effects on blood chemistry, decreased systolic blood pressure and increased plasma antioxidant activity. Overall, the present study explored that investigated carrot cultivars indigenous to Pakistan are the potent source of 16 minerals, carotenoids, natural sugars and phenolic acids with significant biological activities. It is concluded that all the genotyipical different cultivars with compositional variation, having functional and nutraceutical attributes may be beneficial for health conscious consumers.

Contours of Hope: Dissecting Racial Discourse in Francis Duggan's Poetry

This study employs Theodor Adorno's theory of Aesthetics of Resistance to illuminate the intricate interplay between racial discourse and hope in the poetry of Francis Duggan. Through meticulous analysis, this research uncovers how Duggan's verses serve as a form of aesthetic resistance against prevailing racial prejudices. The study investigates the deliberate use of metaphors, imagery, and narrative techniques to convey messages of hope and empowerment within the context of racial discrimination. By examining the aesthetic choices made by Duggan, this research sheds light on the transformative potential of art in challenging and subverting dominant power structures. Ultimately, this investigation offers a nuanced understanding of how Duggan's poetry transcends mere literary expression, emerging as a potent tool for advocating racial equity and social change within the framework of Adorno's Aesthetics of Resistance.

Facilitating Teachers to Enquiry in Social Studies Classrooms

The aim of Social Studies education is to develop democratic citizens. The current teaching and learning practices in Social Studies classrooms in Pakistani schools are not meeting the aims of Social Studies education due to the transmission mode of teaching. Consequently, it has failed to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and disposition which are prerequisitse for democratic citizenship. The reasons for this state of Social Studies education are: firstly, teachers lack of knowledge about effective approaches of teaching and learning this subject; a and secondly, in the case of teachers' knowledge, use does not fully materialize in the classroom, as in spite of their exposure to the theory, they have little support in converting it into effective practice. This action research project was conducted with two Social Studies teachers teaching the said subject in a private English medium secondary school. The major purpose of this study was to enhance my own understanding and practices of the process of facilitating teachers to use the enquiry strategy in their classrooms, with the aim to develop teachers' knowledge, skills and attitudes, so that the objective of teaching and learning Social Studies could be realized. In the process of facilitating teachers to use the enquiry strategy at their workplace, I employed coaching with the view that it can be an effective strategy, particularly in facilitating experienced teachers' learning. I first introduced the teachers to the theory and process of enquiry strategy by conducting a session on enquiry with them. In the light of the reflections on the session, I further engaged the teachers in joint planning to prepare them to use the enquiry approach. However, I realized that one teacher was dominating the sessions; and furthermore, their needs and realities were distinct. Therefore, from then onwards, I facilitated the teachers individually by engaging each one separately in preparing lessons and supporting them in actualizing the plans. Moreover, I demonstrated to them certain stages and activities, whenever I found the teachers perplexed and confused. Teaching was followed by engaging the teachers in post-lesson discussions, during which I encouraged them to reflect on the process, issues, and critical incidents of the instruction and provided them constructive feedback for further improvement. The study found that the teachers' learning could be enhanced at their workplace by engaging them in planning, asking critical questions, challenging their assumptions and beliefs, supporting them in the real classrooms through demonstration/ modeling, where
