Sugarcane is a moderately salt tolerant glycophyte grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions for its high demand as a source of sugar and for biofuel production. Salinity is one of the major adversities that are affecting crop production all over the world. Vegetative propagated sugarcane is very sensitive to salinity at sprouting/germination stage; later it develops tolerance as it reached to maturity. This research was planned to study the accumulation of various metabolites in shoots and roots of sprouts in simulation as well as natural saline/sodic fields in two planting seasons. The ten sugarcane clones obtained from Ayub Agriculture Research Institute Faisalabad, Pakistan were screened using single buds setts in different levels of EC/SAR in simulation and in selected field plots in two planting seasons (Autumn season 2012 and Spring season 2013). The two screened sugarcane clones, one as tolerant (CPF-246) and other as sensitive (S-2003-US-778) were selected for detailed studies at three selected levels of salinity/sodicity at fore-nightly intervals (Autumn season 2013 and Spring season 2014). Growth of both the sugarcane clones reduced as salinity/sodicity increased in simulation as well as field trials. Metabolites such as Chl-a, Chl-b, and Chl-T were severely damaged by the salts concentrations, Chl a/b ratios were found to be higher under stress as compared to control. Total free amino acid contents were higher in both saline/sodic conditions especially in Autumn season. Reduction in primary metabolites under stress shifted the metabolic processes towards enhanced production of secondary metabolites. Antioxidant pigments such as carotenoids were also damaged by high EC/SAR. Anthocyanins were high in shoot and roots of sprouts, especially CPF-246, at all treatments and harvests. High production of H2O2 induced lipid peroxidation by the production of MDA contents in both parts of sprouts as compared to control. Greater production of osmoprotectants such as glycine betaine, proline, soluble sugars, and reducing power assay as well as phenolics occurred at all harvests in both simulation and field trials. The total alkaloids and total lignins were higher in roots of CPF-246 compared to S-2003-US-778, and resulted in reduction of root size. The greater uptake of toxic ions, Na+, Cl-, SO42-, in both roots and shoots of sprouts showed the antagonistic effect on the concentration of essential nutrients; K+, Ca2+, NO3-, PO43-, and Mg2+ thus justify the effect of salinity/sodicity stress more on S-2003-US-778 as compared to CPF-246 and Autumn season reduced more growth of both sugarcane clones as compared to spring season.

Activities of Islamic Sharī’ah Council and Muslim Arbitration Tribunal to Apply Islamic Law in England and Wales

The UK is a Christian majority country with several minority religious groups like Muslims, Hindus, Jews and Sikhs who have been living there for a long time. All faith groups have their own laws. Likewise, Muslims also have their specific laws called “Sharī’ah law” or “Muslim Family Law”. This paper attempts to represent a prospect of how Islamic law deals with the issues faced by the Muslims in England and Wales. There are many “The Islamic Shari’ah Council (ISC)” and “Muslim Arbitrational Tribunal (MAT) to solve the family concerns in England and Wales, for instance, marriage, child custody, divorce and other issues related to their matrimonial life. These councils play a prime role in implementing Islamic law among Muslims in Britain. Since ISC and MAT play a crucial role in applying Islamic law, it will be the focusing component of the paper. This study examines how ISC and MAT resolve the legal problems of the Muslim families and to which extent sometimes it is allegedly not compatible with England and Wales's domestic legal settings. Moreover, the main aim and object of the paper is to find out the internal functions and the processes of the Islamic Sharī’ah Council and Muslim Arbitration Tribunal in England and Wales

Study of Watermarking for Image and Text Based Applications

Due to the rapid development of multimedia and communications technologies, issues related to data vulnerability and copyrights violation has increased. Digital content can be manipulated and reproduced effortlessly. Consequently, there is a considerable requirement for techniques aimed at content protection and authentication. Watermarking techniques can provide copyrights enforcement and authentication to prevent the illegitimate use of digital content. These techniques can be classified into two categories i.e. robust watermarking and reversible watermarking. In this thesis, research work is carried out in three phases. The first phase proposes a robust watermarking technique, which is resilient against the geometrical attacks. It is helpful in executing copyright protection. In robust watermarking, watermark is able to survive in case of attack on the digital content and can be successfully retrieved on extraction. The proposed technique exploits both the robust image feature points and local Zernike moments for embedding secret information. Delaunay tessellation is employed to divide an image into distinct triangular segments based on robust features identified using Harris detector. Zernike moments are calculated for each selected triangular segment, and then the watermark is embedded in the magnitude of Zernike moments using dither modulation. In the second phase, a reversible watermarking technique is proposed. Reversible watermarking is a special type of watermarking technique in which watermark is extracted along with restoration of the host media. Whereas, in case of robust watermarking, we are not able to retrieve the original image. Such watermarking system finds its application in medical and law enforcement, etc. The proposed watermarking scheme is based on pixel value ordering. Image is divided into sub blocks and each block is assessed using a threshold value. If the block belongs to the smooth category, watermark bit is embedded. In contrast, if it is classified as rough block, then the sub block is left unchanged. This technique does not require a location map since it uses histogram shifting. In third phase, the watermarking approaches and their applications for the protection DNA sequences are explored. In DNA watermarking, which is type of text watermarking; watermark information should be embedded in DNA sequence in such a way that it should not raise any functional disorders in the living organism. A watermark is embedded in a DNA sequence through synonymous substitution of nucleotides. The proposed approach ensures Amino Acid conservation, efficient utilization of the available embedding space in DNA sequences, and achieves mutation resistance by since it employs Reed-Solomon codes. The performance of these techniques has been evaluated on the standard test datasets. In some of the cases, the proposed watermarking approaches performed better than the recent existing approaches and showed comparable performance in other cases. The first technique finds its application in protecting the copyrights of the owner. The second watermarking technique can be used in applications where significant amount of data needs to be embedded e.g. information related to the patient in medical images. The third technique related to the DNA watermarking can be used for protection of DNA sequences and also to provide biological data storage as large amount of data can be stored.
