A project was executed on leading cut flower crop, the rose, as it is leading cut flower crop in the country and enjoys high demand in both national and international markets. During last few years, there is an increasing trend in rose cut flower production in Punjab and according to a survey, 1,300 acres of land is under rose cut flower crop in Punjab which is 68% of total area under cut roses in Pakistan. In this study, major rose growing areas of Punjab were surveyed on a detailed questionnaire to develop a profile of growers’ practices and to identify their problems. On the basis of findings of this survey, physiological pre and postharvest assays were carried out to optimize rose cut flower production and handling in the country. It was observed that majority of rose growers in Punjab were illiterate, had small land holdings, were ignorant of modern techniques of cut flower production & handling and need training in both soil & nutrient management as well as postharvest handling. Regarding pre harvest experiments, different cultivars of Rosa hybrida were compared by growing in greenhouse vs. open field and observed that greenhouse cultivation enhanced growth, yield & quality as compared to open field production. Rosy Cheeks & Whisky Mac were vigorously growing & high yielding cultivars followed by Anjleeq whereas Kardinal and Amalia produced good quality flowers in greenhouse. Growing media were standardized by using traditional media amended with organic agricultural wastes. Press mud proved better agricultural waste to be used as growing media for cut roses as it enhanced flower yield and quality. In this survey, soil salinity was pointed out as a major problem in rose cultivation which not only reduced growth but also hampered absorption of various nutrients from soil. To optimize pre- harvest salinity tolerance and micronutrients requirements, two experiments were conducted and observed that roses are salt sensitive plants and when salinity level was raised than 2.5 dSm -1 , growth, yield and quality was reduced. Kardinal and Anjleeq xxiiiperformed slightly better as compared to Gold medal. In case of micronutrients, foliar spray of Boron, Zn & Fe improved flower yield & quality alongwith vegetative growth. Three experiments were conducted to standardize various preservatives, storage modes, temperatures and packing materials to enhance longevity and keeping quality of Rosa hybrida. Sucrose (4%) in combination with ascorbic acid (600 mgL -1 ), acetyl salicylic acid (100 mgL -1 ) or salicylic acid (200 mgL -1 ) proved best treatments as preservative while pulsing with 0.5mM STS solution proved better than un-pulsed for extending vase life. Wet storage was better than dry storage and 1±1°C storage delayed senescence followed by 5±1°C for extending vase life of cut rose flowers. Flower packaging in corrugated cardboard boxes lined with cellophane paper was proved better for storage and transportation as compared to growers’ package and wrapping in newspaper or placement in wooden crates which are common methods of cut rose packaging and transportation in our country at the moment. On the basis of findings of this study, it is suggested that Rose growers should be provided training regarding modern techniques of rose cut flower production & postharvest management. Other media like coco coir and municipal compost should also be tested along with press mud and rice hulls for greenhouse rose production. Role of growth regulators should also be investigated to enhance vase life of Rosa hybrida. Further studies on postharvest behavior of Rosa hybrida should be continued to compare seasonal behavior.

His research paper is meant to explain the difficulties of translation of rhetorical and implicit meanings of Qur᾽ān into Urdu language as the translation of such meanings of Qur᾽ān is seriously a difficult job for reasons including the tacit relationship of meanings with the words’ structure and because these meanings take effect of social and mental characteristics of a particular group of people speaking a common language and also for the reason that the meanings change their position with the incessantly changing condition of mind and culture. Given the above facts the writer put forth analysis of four Urdu translations of Sūrah Al-Ḍuḥā after having studied their rhetorical aspects and implicit meanings in interpretations of different interpreters. The translations are as under. 1. Translation of Shaykh Abdul Qādir (d. 1233 A. H) named as “Maudihul Qur᾽ān”. 2. Translation of Aḥmad Raḍa Khan Braylvi (d. 1340 A. H) named as “Kanz ul ᾽Īmān fi Tarjama Al-Qur᾽ān” 3. Translation of Ashraf ‘Alī Thānvi (d. 1362 AH) with the name “Bayān Al-Qur᾽ān”. 4. Translation of Abdul Mājid Daryā Abādī (d. 1977 A. D) which is in literary style with attractive language. The writer has highlighted the lapses and shortcomings of these translations in rhetorical perspectives of Qur᾽ān and its implicit meanings and has also underlined the difficulties faced by these translators in a descriptive table. Findings and suggestions are given at the end.

Developemnt and Validation of Model of Aural Rehabilitation of Profound Hearing Impaired Children in Punjab- an Experimental Study

Persons with hearing loss have been seen, but the problems and frustration imposed by this loss in their lives have not been imagined. Only diagnosis of hearing loss and providing amplification is not enough to ensure the development of communication potentials of the hearing impaired children (HIC). Aural habilitation/rehabilitation services for children are the dire need of all those suffering from hearing loss, especially for those having severe and profound hearing loss. In Pakistan the rehabilitative plans merely cover speech therapy and special education services employing sign language and total communication as a medium of instruction. The efforts are not being focused on auditory development of the children, which is the base of all problems of HIC. Therefore, the researcher aimed to target this entirely neglected area of provision of aural rehabilitation services through a model in order to bring change in the lives of HIC in Pakistan. The objectives of the study were to collect data about current provisions of aural rehabilitation for hearing impaired children in Punjab, to develop a model of aural rehabilitation for deaf children in Pakistan, to develop a standardised tool to be used during experimentation and to validate the proposed model of aural rehabilitation via experimentation. The study carries immense significance from different angles in the context of the planning and management of educational cum rehabilitative plans of children with hearing loss. The model may serve as a guide to policy makers, administrators of special schools, speech therapists, teachers and parents. The design of the study was the pretest-posttest control group design. Sample groups were selected through random sampling technique. Data regarding current rehabilitation practices was obtained through questionnaires for teachers, speech therapists, audiologists, principals and parents of HIC. A framework of the proposed model was made with the help of logic model development guide and by incorporating the recommendations of the stakeholders obtained via questionnaires. Pakistani experts’ opinions were obtained through questionnaire for further modification required in the model. The model was validated through experimentation. A speech perception test was developed and its reliability and validity were established after conducting a pilot study. This test was used as the tool of experimentation i.e. to obtain the pretest and posttest scores of the HIC. The difference in mean speech perception scores of the control group and experimental group profound HIC at posttest level was significant at 0.01 level. It was concluded that aural rehabilitation is feasible as well as necessary for educational and vocational rehabilitation of HIC in Pakistan. Multidisciplinary approach in special schools to be served as preparatory schools for mainstreaming, provision of digital hearing aids from government, auditory training, integrated curriculum development, follow-up of IEP’s focusing on aural mode of communication, development of assessment tools in national and regional languages, efforts for screening and prevention of hearing loss and parental training cum involvement in planning and implementation of individual plans were considered as the necessary ingredients, to bring change in current educational cum aural rehabilitation programme of HIC in Punjab.
